You could argue, fan base out of touch with club too. Reading half these posts youd think we are a double hard pwopper nawty unit of a team with militant fans.

... rather than the family friendly, award winning community club who people aspired to be for a decade or 2.

Unfortunately for some, B mob and the 80s were over a long time ago.
70s Firm made B Mob look like nursery outing. Just thought I’d say……..
  • I just can't get bothered by a few scarves. It's a bit sad and I would rather that we didn't have them but so what.  They will probably sell to the tourists that go and will never go again and will all be forgotten about.
Wrexham fans can take the piss if they want, yet, despite their current massiveness they can't sell out their away end.  These extra 10,000 fans are here for the Hollywood not here for the Wrexham or the Charlton.
Its all a bit weird to me as a traditional fan but it's the way the world is going and taking as much money as you can off transient tourists is what everyone does everywhere.
Quite frankly although Charlton’s home support rarely tops 13,000 in League One, it’s obviously not the same 13,000.
I estimate that the actual number of home fans that will come to at least one game per season could be 20,000.

So when (rightly or wrongly) Wrexham is the biggest game of the season it’s quite possible that there are 20,000 Charlton fans there, even if a fair amount only attend occasionally.

This will be our biggest selling home league attendance in 10 years (where we haven’t just given 5000 tickets away.)

Why shouldn’t the club try to monetise whatever they can from it and ALSO try to pick up a few new fans from the 10000 new faces who will be there.

so there are more emails flying about but there’s also been a big marketing campaign aimed at the younger generation that some of us probably haven’t seen.  Whatever they are doing is working.

The way ffp now works means we can’t just get cash injections from a wealthy owner.  We have to be self sustaining and can only spend a percentage of our revenue so anything that increases revenue is good in my book.  This is football nowadays

You really are badly out of touch with our fanbase, this is a massive faux pas
    Really? I can’t agree.

They are pushing the one game that will make money.

That’s the top and bottom really.

No one is being harmed by it in by any way.
No one is being harmed I agree.

But the vast majority of fans find the whole thing hugely embarrassing.

It's fucking Wrexham not Barcelona ffs.
    Why is it ‘embarrassing’ though?

Dont all businesses advertise to death when they can to sell something?

It’s not a statement on any one fan.
If you cannot see how embarrassing it is then that's on you.
Just look at the piss taking on social media for starters or read this thread.
Our owners are supposed be Billionaires and I can't believe raising a couple of grand selling scarfs will affect them one bit.
Hopefully they won't try anymore stunts like this in future
I don’t engage on wider social media. So that’s on you ! 😉🙁

Social media is not representative of all.

The serious point is that we are trying to make money by selling ‘tat’ to whoever will take it. There is no need to be embarrassed by that.

Of course it’s small beer in isolation but if the scarf also sells a burger also sells a mug etc. then that is the commercial aim.
Exactly. A few muppets taking the piss on social media is hardly making the club look embarrassing.
  • I’ve totally missed the half and half scarves stuff.

Either way it's 50 years ago, time to realise things change.

Spot on “Covered End” I agree a large portion of the additional attendance are the those who pick 4/5 games a season (for what ever reason). The hype for this game has resulted in the majority of them picking this one to attend. Sorry if their attendance pisses off the “Real Charlton” but there is most likely 2-3000 of them at the Valley every week.

  • What a lovely offer , trying to take the edge off us selling our soul and being cheapskates

Great £5 for a pint of flat gnats piss in a plastic mug...🙄
It does not really matter what the price is, they wont have the staff to deal with the crowds and most will simply walk off. If you do get a pint it will be poured with no head on it.

This just isn't true in L1, SCMP rules allow it.

There's a big difference between a marketing push to sell tickets (good in my eyes) and printing and attempting to profit off another teams badge (bad).
This is something that needs to be made more clear tbh. Charlie Methven said this isn't the case at Bromley Addicks, if someone wants to correct me if I'm wrong?

From what I remember him saying, we can't just go and do these so called cash injections, and he heavily implied our hands were tied in how much money we could spend.

Yet I've read many people say that's not the case and we can sign whoever.

As for the argument about people saying that it's an opportunity to make money, I don't understand the logic. If you were truly a billionaire, and loved the club (allegedly) a few thousand is a drop in the ocean.

It all falls back to what I thought originally, and have always thought. I don't believe these lot actually have much money.

If they did, they'd be doing this type of advertising for every game to try and boost attendances and doing whatever they could. This is a pure cash grab weekend, has been from the way the fixtures came out.
Isn't it as much about promoting brand awareness as it is about making money? However, if they are rich, I'm sure they didn't get so by passing up on opportunities to make money, no matter how insignificant. I can't fault the Club for trying to promote the match, not that I think all the ideas have been good ones because I don't.

The article I've linked below  accurately states the current SCMP rules for anyone who's interested.

How Birmingham City shattered transfer records – and left English football in shock - The Athletic
Unfortunately mate it's behind a pay wall, and that money will now be going to my club so we can afford a midfield maestro.

    Thanks for the article though
  • Wait till you see what we have got planned for our first team fixture against Chelsea on Tuesday.

  • i still cant get my head around we had 8-9,000 home fans last Saturday, a disappointing midweek performance and the number of home fans rises to 21-22,000 this Saturday, for a more expensive game!

It won’t be Charlton/home fans, it’s going to be people getting all excited after watching the TV show who want to see it for real.

Normal service will be resumed at 5pm on Saturday

All very laudable but would wish we had football status to be proud of along with that rather than languishing in league one and plating clubs like Wrexham like star struck housewives.

Club's not very fucking friendly to my family as it makes us bloody miserable every weekend.

Hugh Jackman is a Norwich City fan. Just FYI.
  • Always nice to get the Barca/Real Madrid friendly out of the way early season so we can get back to concentrating on defending a goal lead with minutes remaining against teams that we would not have put out a full team 20 years ago.
That said, it will be great to see the Valley with people in it again. Maybe someone somewhere will see what potential WE have.

I understand there's a helicopter involved - so the training ground might just be a place to park.

    Thanks

im thinking of storming the directors box to do a power point sales pitch on my movie idea…..salmon trousers

its a success story, based on a posh kid and his life at public school and how he carved out a successful career in running football clubs.

    Good idea?
