Not read a single post I align with suggesting Jones job shouldn’t be jeopardy, The only reason I see given is down to ‘we can’t keep changing managers’.
Talk of needing 3 transfer windows etc is just not modern day lower league football, where large turnovers are the norm.
Jones simply doesn’t deserve that time. He arrived in Feb having been actively looking for Champ / L1 work for a few months. So he’s not come in cold from overseas. had a long run of monitoring these levels.
Going into the summer he had months to assess the capabilities, strengths and weaknesses of all individuals in our squad, and a first hand working knowledge of L1 and what is required to be successful. He was given a budget better than most. I was convinced we were going to have a successful season as I thought we were months ahead of the curve with our planning and resources.
What’s been compiled has been a disaster.
There’s clear squad balance things that need to be readdressed in January. Would you trust Jones further to bring in more of ‘his’ players?
I wouldn’t on what I’ve seen. He needs results desperately over the next few weeks otherwise I think an early decision needs to be made before the Jan window.
We all wanted him to succeed and I suspect we all still do. But there needs to be some big improvement soon otherwise we are in for another damaging 2nd half of season nothingness and even further away from making NEXT season successful.
All good points but I still don’t trust Methven and Scott with appointing a replacement. I believe they are part of the problem. What manager in their right mind will want to risk their future with a Technical Director like Scott having some responsibility on recruitment. I don’t believe every player recruited over the summer was solely scouted by Jones. Scott must be involved and Jones has hinted at some friction between the two on some decisions. I think the Americans are supporting us financially, especially if some of the salaries of the new recruits mentioned are true, but their money will be wasted while Scott and Methven are still here. We need to be vocal about what a bad job the top management are doing, otherwise it will be another Appleton style appointment. The fans need to let the owners know the senior management are incompetent.
I’m certainly not an apologist for Methven and Scott but the situation we find ourselves in on the pitch is firmly layed at the door of the team manager. He without doubt shaped the vast bulk of the summer recruitment and is solely responsible for our style of play. Both have been shown to be woeful. I don’t think he’ll be given money in January and I’m firmly in the camp that he needs to at the very least start next season as manager. On the other hand I’m not at all confident he’s got what it takes to turn this all around. Nothing points towards him doing that. For all our sakes I hope I’m wrong.
So you’re fully confident in Scott and Methven’s pick of next manager? The people that appointed Appleton and led the team to its worst finish in 90 odd years. We all thought Jones could bring success by bypassing the senior management incompetence but all we have seen is a madman make mad decisions. If Jones does go we’re still left with those two at the helm, still making poor decisions and deterring any decent manager from joining us. Look beyond the next sacking, they are the problem.
I’m not confident at all in Methven or Scott. All I’m saying is that the first team squad and shit football is down to Jones. Now it might well be the case that Methven and Scott are a problem in recruiting our next manager should the need arise but it’s more likely that Charltons reputation within football as a basket case club and manager’s graveyard will deter at least as much, if not more. I want Jones given time but if we’re still having this conversation at the end of November 2025 then god only knows what the future holds. Jones has been given more autonomy than probably any Charlton manager for the last 10 years and he’s fucked it up good and proper.
There are plenty of smart people in football with great reputations. Methven arrived with a poor reputation and what he’s achieved at Charlton so far hasn’t changed anything. I agree, Jones has got it wrong and is maybe yesterday’s man. He should probably go but I guarantee we will attract no one better. Methven and Scott are preventing that from happening, simply by still being at the club.
This is true but we were in the same boat with Duchatalet really and got lucky appointing a cheap young option in bowyer which worked , the only hope we have is something similar which will very likely be by chance rather than design given their appalling success rate of 3 disastrous appointments so far
I don't think it was lucky, we had a decent team back then with creative players, something we don't have now. Regardless of who the manager is if you don't have creative players you will struggle.
No manager gets it right 100% of the time. The key question for me is whether Nathan Jones recognises his mistakes. If he’s willing to address the imbalances in future windows, it might be worth sticking with him. But if he’s going to keep painting the wall the same colour, then maybe it’s time for a change.
The really worrying thing is that I think Jones has no idea how terrible the football is. He just thinks that he hasn't had the rub of the green and that if he stubbornly sticks to his long ball guns it will eventually pay off.
I was massively excited when Jones was appointed and was willing to deal with last season's style of play as a means to an end and a quick fix to get us safe, expecting this summer to be about building a side to play a more attractive and expansive style of football. Alas I think the football has got even worse and these major signings with championship reputations and big experience just haven't panned out at all. I'll give him Alex Mitchell, Edwards and Godden as summer arrivals that have at least shown they'll be good signings.
I just don't know where this goes - he's too stubborn to change the style of play , i don't expect us to suddenly be a buccaneering 433 with Dixon and TC flanking Leaburn as we pass teams off the pitch with 40 pass moves but the current style of play is some of the worst I've seen. I also wonder how long his methods will last with the players before they suss him out like Southampton and Stoke did.
I really don't want to be back on the managerial merry-go-round again because it makes the club look like a laughing stock but Jones has to turn this around and fast. If Jones doesn't turn this around then I expect Scott and Rodwell to go with him because it's been a complete disaster recruitment wise both managerially and on the player front.

If we’d had the rub of the green and had been getting results then so be it. The football might still have been terrible but if terrible football gets us promoted I’d take that.

I don't think that consistently terrible long ball football would get us promoted, rub of the green or not. The early season successes were mostly due to luck - the games could have gone either way - and that is not a feasible season-long thing to depend on.
I do think the 'only hires his old mates for the team' thing is overblown massively on here. Potts and Hylton were brought in as primarily a coach and a backup who was there to cover for the fact Jones wasn't allowed to sign an actual proper replacement for Gillesphey. We wouldn't have seen Hylton if we hadn't had injuries to Leaburn, TC, Kanu, Chuks and Ahadme at various times, and even then he's just been a last roll of the dice when we're losing. Really it's just Berry and ACampbell in terms of proper first teamers. Berry, like everyone else, isn't dominating games but he's our second top scorer this season and he's pretty much fulfilling his role of sometime starter and impact player. Remember first game Anderson was picked over him. It's ACampbell who is the real disappointment. He was again brought in as another option in the midfield, an alternative to the three that was meant to be Coventry, Docherty and Anderson/Berry. He had a poor loan at Millwall but dropping down to L1 should have been fine. It hasn't been, he's really struggled.
It's hardly the case that we've just gone out and signed all Jones' old players like people would like it to be though. If anything, you can look at the signings of ACampbell and the other two and start to think that quite early on Jones felt he wasn't getting the response from the players he was hoping for. He talked the signings of Potts and Hylton up for their attitudes more than anything else and even at the time that felt telling. That's the worrying part, we're not pressing like we should, the players aren't doing what they're asked and Jones can't influence them to even with his role models dotted about the place. That's the troubling aspect, not that Hylton has made a few sub appearances

Okay well lucky with the team then. Lucky with the team and the manager. It was luck. Duchatalet wasn’t running the club well he was just as disastrous if not worse! The point is he got lucky with what we had and we got up (and should have easily stayed up). Our only hope is the same thing happens again. There is no hope that Jones suddenly turns into Kieran McKenna.

A lot of us would take poor football with decent results. The issue is poor football and poor results which seems to be what we are getting at the moment.

I thought that's what we were in for after first couple of games. Win ugly but win.
There is a process. Time will tell but IMO we need to stick with a manager and enjoy the journey. I'll still be Charlton whatever happens. Need the lows to appreciate the highs. TC and Leaburn credit to the club tonight. COYA

It is a shite watch, somewhat softened by 6 beers and a few gin & tonics .... But when I see the young players creating and influencing then that is a positive. When I see a reaction from some poor results, then that is a positive. Clearly Jones has the players support, and I know it took a while to click at Luton so he also needs to improve. But I know he did wonders at Luton, so he has the ability, but he needs the support to achieve that. Perhaps we need to see and give him the chance, They are all humans and I'll give him time to find the right pieces for the jigsaw.
If it takes a couple of seasons so be it. I just hope if he does achieve it, the club and structure is built alongside.
I would love it to be this season, and who knows. But Jones knows how to get promoted and how to get players to work for him, so he has my support while he is the manager of our club.
I hope more then anyone that we can turn a corner and kick on, but in all honestly a load of you need a head wobble, we just scraped through against probably one of the worst league one teams we have ever come up against and to make things worse they only had 10 men for 25 mins of the game. More clueless tactics from the weird geezer on the sideline. 3 points feel like a releif at the minute but we wont be picking up much more points playing the same old shit we have done in recent times.

The process only appears to work against bottom of the league sides playing with ten men.
We are going to have to stick with him, I agree. There's not a manager in the land that will get a tune out of this bunch.
And I cant see these owners sticking their hands in their pockets for thier third fresh start in two seasons!

I've no idea really. But from the outside they ran a round alot and tried hard. Perhaps we a just in a shite patch. It happens, I have them all the time.

you and me both! At least you're optimistic - I need to try that more!
As long we aren’t properly in a relegation battle fully expect Jones to stay for the remained of the season.
Going to repeat the boring line of we can’t just keep sacking manager, at some point we have to stick with someone. Don’t think anyone is happy with current set-up and the turgid football, but feel like we aren’t anywhere near sacking territory IMO.
