Not sure on the line up, some positive, some strange, if its a 433 fair enough it seems to "work" better but doesnt seem likely given the amount of defenders starting.

  • Don't know what to think about the line up today. Doesn't fill me with optimism but let's see... Fear we will struggle to score goals and may have to wait until the arrival of Chuks at around 65 minutes. UTA.

    Hallelujah... it's only a bloody 4-4-2!!!
    It’s not going to be a 4-4-2
We have 5 defenders and 1 wide midfielder playing, jones doesn’t play a flat 4-4-2 and a 4-4-2 diamond makes even less sense that a flat 4-4-2 with the team we have picked.

Trying to find the right combination. Not unhappy with the line up but would I think Docherty and Allan Campbell on the bench is maybe a little two similar, so for me perhaps Leaburn or Dixon but Jones see's his players on the training ground and would call their readiness better than me, lets hope it all gels.
The subs bench is poor, other than Aneke. No game changers there.
  • Be nice if Anderson or Coventry or both have a pop on goal today.

Slight change of shape then. Anderson and Coventry holding with TC as a 10. Have to feel for Taylor there
If that is the shape then Anderson won't be holding. He'll be shuttling between the two midfielders and covering as much ground as possible. Anderson couldn't be a more different player to Taylor and that role couldn't be less suited to Taylor.
I’m seeing it as a double pivot a bit like
    Liverpool play
I have to admit I'm very biased against double pivots (so was Johann Cruyff!) as it is but I'm particularly against double pivots being used at League One level in teams where there's big gaps between the lines and transitional play is slower and less technical. Liverpool play a 433 and they do employ a high press like us, but they use their full backs extremely high with wingers ahead of them. They have two banks of width and leave only two defenders at home, with two extremely mobile deeper midfielders. All of the players in that middle three can play as 10s just as easily as they can play deeper and they all have a range of passing and technical ability to rotate if needed. The usual fears about the deeper midfielders blocking each other generally aren't there because Liverpool leave their wingers and their attacking midfielder so high that they always have an outball forward or wide to their advanced full back. Shape-wise they're more of a 2-4-1-3 when they're on the ball and we just can't do that. Put in a double pivot with Coventry and Taylor in our team and you'll have two very deep midfielders getting in each others' way and punting the ball up to either the one advanced wingback or the striker and seeing it come back while the third midfielder chases round after nothing all game. Maybe if we had incredibly mobile and dangerous holding midfielders it could work but Coventry and Taylor want to stand in the exact same spot and so the same job, it would not be a fun day out.
Anyone trying to justify the line up by saying Liverpool use a pivot or double pivot (wtf does that all mean) is losing the plot.

We could play with 8 defenders if we had Erling Haarland up front ffs !!

WTF Gary ! you need to get out more mate.

Can't see Berry and Docherty sitting on the bench for long before they replace Anderson and Kanu, pushing TC up top
  • I thought I read that Berry was carrying an injury hence being on the bench only recently.

Wondering if there is any point in watching today, given how doomed we appear to be before we've even kicked off... I'd love to see fan outrage if a Manager was as miserable as you lot before a match in his presser.

  • Like to see us try something a bit different, TC been our most vital cog this season imo so happy to see maybe a bit more dynamism from our front 3 than we've seen so far, hope it pays off and Potts is the man he's been billed to be!

  • FT scores today:
    Crawley 0-2 Bolton
    Reading 2-1 Hudders

  • Let's hope the changes make us a bit more creative, good luck to the boys today, I think we can get a win along with some much needed confidence with B/Rovers and more importantly B/City coming up!
  • Unless we win by a big margin, the best position we can achieve is 3rd
  • Similar lineup to the Cambridge game. Would have been nice to see Taylor in there as well but I liked how we played against Cambridge. I especially liked Potts at the back. But, let’s see how it goes.

Huddersfield are on a horrible run of form since beating Bolton.

Thats two chances they've had to get above us, they've wasted now
And Bolton starting to find their feet again, with 7 goals scored and 6 points from their past 2 games.

  • It was only a matter of time before Potts replaced Gillesphey, seeing that Potts is Jones' player. It'll be interesting how he links up with Edwards.

Who did Jones just say was the other coming back from injury with Miles?

I thought we've had a fully fit squad apart from Edwards this season, who has been back a while

Kanu and Godden did well together up front in the Pizza Paint cup so I wouldn’t be surprised by either a usual 352 with TC behind them or a 442 with Potts LB and Edwards LM (he did play some there for Dunfermline).

Scott Lindsey left Crawley for MK Dons earlier in the week so that could have helped Bolton.
  • What ever our formation is today I hope we use the flanks with Campbell and Kanu encouraged to take on the defenders in a wider position. Hopefully Godden stays central.
Reading and Blackpool were such disappointing results we need to show more of the mentality against Bolton.

Only 4 of those players who started against Cambridge are starting this afternoon
  • Fully expecting a free role for Tyreece, with him given the freedom to do / go where he wants for the most part

Would Coventry and Taylor be too similar played as a double pivot, or even one in front of the other?

We saw last season Dobson and Coventry together as a double pivot didn't work; eventually Dobson was pushed further forward to give more energy further up the midfield.

I guess Karoy coming in is to meant to provide that 'Dobson' type energy today?

  • VFR going already...nice stuff one and all...
