Haven't read any comments, so forgive me if this has been discussed.  I know it's one match but any chance that Taylor has played his way into contention?
I don't think so, he looks like being a very good deputy to Coventry but not enough to displace him entirely and his skills don't really make him a good replacement for Berry or Doherty.

I'd have him on the bench for sure though

The only reason we've not seen Taylor is because it appears that he plays in the exact position that Coventry does.
Indeed, his free kicks and corners are better but he is not as imposing or front foot  as Coventry. Doubt there is room for both in the same 11.
I must have been watching a different game to everyone else. Second half Taylor started to play his corners along the ground to our player on the near post. Whether the idea is to then play it back to Taylor for a cross back into the box we'll never know as it never got back to Taylor.

Why cant we just stick the ball into the box for a player to thump in a header ala Arsenal against Spurs on Sunday. Haven't seen that in years.
We scored from a corner on Saturday
Don't let facts get in the way of a good moan
To be fair I do struggle to remember the one we scored before that... One last season maybe; Jones vs Cambridge at the Valley?

Kanu has added so much to his game but seems to have temporarily lost his killer instinct. He had two glorious chances last night and spurned both. He's always primarily been a goalscorer so would love to see him find that again.
Give him game time and he will, no striker at this level scores 40/50 across a season.

    Agree.
Kanu has scored a shedload of goals in every age group for CAFC since he was 9. Even last season he had 10 goal (4 at Southend)
I am/was one one the few who wanted Daniel at 19 to continue to learn under Nathan and the coach at CAFC and not go out on loan in 24/25 as I think he can score goals once the 1st one go in. Pleased he got an assist for Godden but will be even happier when he scores himself as he will continue to have opportunities.

Nathan Jones skill at motivation in this BSM Trophy is amazing. So many clubs treat it like a friendly.

I think he's scored 5 in 35 or something like that. I'm not criticising him, he's added a lot to his game, it's just for someone who is obviously a natural goalscorer and who broke records in the youth setup, there are certain chances you'd expect them to be bagging more regularly than not.

Yeah me too, our set pieces are poor. Last season our set piece xG was 8.71 and we scored 6 set piece goals so we were even underperforming that. We were actually the lowest scorers from set pieces, Cambridge are the only other team with less than 10 (8 scored, 9.61 xG).

This season we are 8th on the set piece xG table (2.43) but joint 14th for actual set piece goals scored. 5 teams have failed to score from set pieces so far and Blackpool have already scored 6. Rotherham have a set piece xG of 4.29 and have only scored 1 which is a poor conversion ratio.

I wasn’t saying he’ll score 20+, but this is a better squad and he’s under a good manager. He can now play alongside a target man rather than take that role on next to May which he had to last season. He’s a young player who’s still learning, he’ll miss chance like they all will but he’s capable of improving on last season.

With all our options up front I think they’ll rotate and share the goals between them, if he got enough minutes I could see Kanu getting 10 or close to it. At the moment Jones has moved Campbell ahead of him, Leaburn’s returning and Dixon has added another option, so his game time might be limited.
  • Bromley have managed to get 2 points from one game! They really have been taking note of the explanations of @seth plum

You get a bonus point if you win a penalty shootout after a draw in 90 minutes.
Good god! Can they find any more ways to make this compétion more absurd?
I think it's quite a good idea. you always get a result on the night, and it's useful for teams to get some penalty shoot out practice.

It's such a different game between men's and youth football. Much more physical, much more contact as soon as you get the ball and much more time pressure in the moment. He's also only 19 and a lot has been asked of him. He got 6 goals in 30 appearances last season and in comparison in his first L1 season Alfie May got 4 in 27 aged 24. I think Kanu needs a bit of time to adapt his game and in that period he'll look less clinical because he can't approach chances in the same way he did against kids he was stronger than. He seems like such a hard worker, I think he'll get there.
  • Just wondered, does anyone think that Taylor and Coventry could play in the same team...🙄
I know you're joking with this post but they definitely could. It's like when people thought it was one or the other with Coventry and Dobson, completely different styles of player, that just played near eachother on the pitch.

God forbid we try and keep the ball against pants teams instead of lumping it long or giving up the lions share of possession. I could understand the logic if we had a player in the middle who could drive the ball forwards or run past a man, but none of our midfielders are offering that currently. So it would be nice to see another midfielder who can dictate the pace a little. Yesterday felt like I wasn't looking up for a lot of the game and it would be nice to see that on Saturday as well.

Problem is that while a Coventry/Taylor midfield would be very good at keeping the ball I'm not sure how much we'd actually do with it. Lots of possession yes but not much in the way of actual attacking play, based on current evidence.

Admittedly the "hoof it to Ahadme" approach isn't 100% successful either but I don't think this is the answer.

For a side playing a five man midfield, we are showing a distinct lack of threading the ball through to strikers. Our dead-balls are rubbish. We seem to have our pecking order of CMs wrong. I'd have TT and Edun in front of most. Not seen too much of Campbell who was handicapped by early yellow yesterday.

One reason we are poor here is defence playing too deep.

To my recollection he did that once, messed it up, and didn't try it again.

Hoping that Zach Mitchell is OK.
I believe the reason Nathan Jones is so perky after that, is because if he has to drop anybody he can say to the player that he has other options justified in playing, because the talent and ability clearly doesn’t only rest with the current first eleven.

Zach was walking OK when he joined his teamates clapping our fans on the pitch after the final whistle.

A stand our performer for me last night but then I've been one of his cheerleaders for several seasons.

Just need to offer him a contract he can't refuse before too many agents start turning up at matches....but guessing most are aware of his talent already.
I believe Zach is the ideal utility player. I believe he will make a very good midfielder.
  • I think it is a good trophy if you can do what we did last night and make eleven changes. It is very useful for a manager to be abe to do this. aybe we incur a fine I don't know the details but it is a semi competetive match in which to give squad players game time. Not really much not to like about it. I don't care if we win it but a fair number of games where we don't feel forced to play first teamers  has to be good.
  • On the Charlton TV coverage there were problems with the sound. But not when it cut out obviously a signal problem but Tel’s  commentary seemed ever so slightly ahead of play. Did anyone in Tenerife or other parts of the world notice it? It annoyed me so much that I switched over to Sky.

No, it was perfect for us.

Same for me but I only made it to Belgium.

It was slightly irritating knowing how a move was going to turn out before it happened on screen. Particularly when Tel got over excited thinking we’d scored, because unfortunately, a second later, we still hadn’t. 😂
