The Human League mk1 - Gordons Gin

Each to their own , a couple i really like , and yes i know ones a advert !
Gordon's Gin is a great track. Was it written as an advert though? I was only aware of it as a track on Travelogue for a long time. I have seen the mouthwatering advert at the cinema, but that wasn't until some years later. So much later that I just presumed that some marketing guy had cottoned on to the fact there was a song named after their product.

REMs MTV unplugged version of Love Is All Around is (imo) better than The Troggs original.

I poached this off the Web

Gordon's Gin is the title of an instrumental track written by Jeff Wayne and recorded by The Human League for inclusion on the Travelogue album.

I prefer Frank Zappa's version of Ravel's Bolero to the original 1930 version by Piero Coppola.

Manic Street Preachers - Umbrella (originally by Rihanna)

Reminds me of an XFactor episode years ago when the contestant proclaimed that, "Tonight, I'm going to be singing Hallelujah by Alexandra Burke".

No you're f***in not you philistine

    Valerie - Amy Winehouse
Tainted Love  - Soft Cell (only just but they take it in such a different direction)
    Hurt - Johnny Cash
I Won't Back Down - Johnny Cash (Tom Petty sounds like he would back down, but Johnny doesn't)

All the Dylan ones people have already mentioned

America - The Nice - Prog rock at its best.
The Boxer - Mumford and Sons, with awesome Jerry Douglas's guitar.
Words of Love - Patti Smith. Not necessarily better than Buddy's original but different and very good.

Better than Gloria Jones ??? You're having a laugh, the only direction they took it was down the shit hole

Have to say I expected that to be a bit naff but it's actually very good. Of course he's no Bill Medley but certainly a decent version, it's a thumbs up for me (but not better  :D)

Surprised it took five pages for anyone to say Amy Winehouse’s Valerie.

First one that came to mind having just been out to watch the film.

Johnny Walker has a regular "better than original" feature on his Sounds of the Seventies programme, Sunday afternoon, Radio 2

Blimey. I remember listening to and loving Johnny Walker when he was on Radio Caroline.
I'm out of touch with radio, didn't realise he was still around.

    Moon River - Morrissey
Romeo And Juliet - The Killers
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side - Jeff Buckley (maybe not better, but still..)

Fantastic cover of one of my favourite songs.
Royksopps version of Ice Machine, b-side of Depeche Modes first single.
A live favourite in DMs early years.
Wish I knew how to embed the YouTube video.

Last programme left that's worth listening to on Radio 2

As a 6 Music listener who’s listens to a bit of Radio 2, I think there are a few. Gambo’s show are quite interesting, Liza Tarbuck’s good and some of the other specialist show are okay. The daytime output is pretty poor though.

I came here to say Hurt, but as it's been mentioned a couple of times already, let's add:
    Desperado - Linda Ronstadt
Tainted Love (obvs) - Soft Cell
    Valerie- Mark Ronson

(and, cue abuse...) Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson has done loads of good covers. Sweet Dreams is one, Tainted Love another. I also like his Personal Jesus and Down in The Park. In fact I think the covers are better than his original material; better performer than song writer in my opinion.

    I'm Free - Soup Dragons.

I can't really pick between them though, and I say this as someone who prefers Amy's music more generally! Completely understand the rationale though.

Dear Prudence - Soiuxsie & The Banshees
Viva Las Vegas - Dead Kennedys
Have I The Right - Dead Kennedys
    White Lightnin - The Fall
    Rollin Dany - The Fall
The Day Before You Came - Blancmange
The cover version of this was better, but not the (admittedly acceptable) Fall effort. George Jones's is the best.

One from me: Love Hurts -Roy Orbison
Thank you, that is great fun and has gone on my 'liked songs' list. It's still The Fall for me though.

Well, the song is called Tainted Love and they took into far sleazier territory than Gloria Jones could have
