As per The Udders forum; "Heard May will be on 11k a week at Birmingham, can’t compete with that, should have gotten the deal over the line sooner"... Sounds like a good offer from Brum...if true...🤷♂️
Once we'd accepted an offer from him his mind was made up to leave so it was clearly then going to be about money. Short career and all that. If he can pick up half a million a year for a couple of years he goes a long way towards securing his future I guess.
Accepted an offer from him, or for him?
One letter (then rearranged) can make quite a difference here!
We received an offer For him. My mistake.
Give us some good news @Swisdom we need some good signings in now , you must know something.
All I know is I'm going to have a new neighbour.
Deathly silent on the rumour front. The club have worked hard to keep everything under wraps. I know we were keen on Etete, Ahadme, Davies. We did look at Lolos formerly of Crawley but we went off him fairly quickly. There's a trialist over from Mount Pleasant apparently but no idea who that is And one other mystery player who has a lot of rave reviews but who is very raw at the moment. I'm sworn to secrecy on him so as not to jeopardise anything but I wouldn't think he's necessarily lined up as a starter just yet anyway.
Call me cynical, but that is the most Charlton transfer rumour mill possible.
I am going to assume, we went off him because Bolton were interested and he would rather have gone there? That's usually what happens unless it's outside football reasons I.e. they want to live nearer family.
A trialist from Mount Pleasant, who let's be honest, likely won't be good enough to make an immediate impact, and then a mystery player that won't start, when we already have talented players that shouldn't quite be starting anyway, along with selling our best player.
Just have to laugh sometimes.
The signings so far have all come from nowhere so nothing to say there aren’t a few more up the sleeve.
the “other player” - if he joins - might settle really quickly and go straight into the team. He’s an unknown quantity at this time but I’ve heard good stuff about him so he could be a real coup
so we’ve lost cbt, Dobbo and May now - small has the potential to be as exciting as cbt and hasn’t refused to play for us yet or feigned injury.
We’ve brought in a player from West Ham’s academy who is a lot younger than Dobbo. Just because he doesn’t smash into tackle like Dobbo did doesn’t necessarily make him less effective. weve also brought in a guy who was a premier league player 3 months ago - how many league 1 teams will be saying that this year. Like Berry is A real leader of men. Alex Mitchell was massively popular and important for Lincoln last year and should fit in nicely with a bit of steel and serial threat.
It’s not all doom and gloom - yes we need some attackers but maybe, just maybe, the club know this and are working on it!
I am not disputing the signings of Berry and Mitchell, it's just specifically that round up you just shared, it's so Charlton of the past few seasons.
I don't expect our business is anywhere near done, but they'll need to make at least 6 new signings of proper quality now if they have any hope of contesting, our squad wasn't up to much before, it's just got significantly weaker.
Jones says we have been bold and aggressive in this transfer window. Dobson and May gone. A reserve keeper, reserve LB, a CB and a midfielder signed.
Imagine if we were not bold and aggressive! I hope the window gets better and quick because so far, it is as crap as usual.
But we've got to trust Jones...or something
What’s the alternative?
Dont worry, give it until January and we'll probably find out.
We'll probably be in mid-table, we'll start seeing posts on here saying that Jones should go, which'll eventually be echoed from the stands.
He'll get sacked, and then we'll be right back here again in the summer, because failing to back the Manager the last 4-years has worked so well - Rinse and repeat. Wont ever be the fans fault though, even though the actions behind sacking the Manager will be as a result of the fans voting with their feet.
?
lol!... Knew that would be popular... Fans are never faultless.
I mean if we suddenly start to get endless calls every week of: "Jones out" thats going to force the owners into a decision isnt it?
So now the football world we live in knows we’re absolutely desperate for a striker or two. Thats the clubs, agents and players. The prices and player expectations just went north.
Unless of course we already have a couple of deals done and dusted and ready to go.
It’s what I’d hope but not necessarily what I’ve heard.
I thought it was said at the end of last week that there was 2 very very close.
It’s never done until it’s done. I think both are now further away than they were a week or so ago.

Anyone who is concerned about the above is a bedwetter or suicidal or frenzied hair on fire alarmists who don’t see the bigger picture. Meanwhile, reality check, to settle the nerves we have actually signed a reserve GK, a reserve LB, a CH and a 31 year old Midfielder. With the expectation of another 5/6 signings it doesn’t matter how many “twist yourself into a pretzel” classes I attend, I still have some serious reservations about where we are and what the final picture will look like, but as at today, given where we are, I don't see that the team we could put out now is any better than the one that finished last season, is very short of goals and is certainly not in danger of top half. Let’s hope the plan comes together, Jones works miracles, we get goals and talent through the door, HMS piss the league is in full sail, with the wind, the valley is buzzing and we are set for Championship football…..but forgive me for my cautious pessimism, but as always time will tell and is often the pudding in which the proof is found. None of us can stand much more of this cringeworthy mediocrity marooned in the dark depths of the football ladder.
Quite right let's sack the bastard!, perhaps that nice Mr Appleton will come back if we ask him nicely.
Not what I said at all. Jeez, note to self, some people are hard of reading
I'm so glad we have owners with money & serious ambitions....so much so we dont have to sell our best players & can recruit meaningfully and with purpose.
We do if the manager would prefer alternative players and probably use the cash, raised by Mays sale, to buy who he wants. We shall see.
We will indeed.
But we've already slipped past Nathan Jones "ideal" situation of having the bulk of the squad in by the start of pre-season. If this is "backing the manager" then I hate to see when he's not.
Big week ahead. 4 days then we play our first pre-season game. Then they are off to their training camp.
We need to have brought in at least another 5 players by then - one being a replacement striker for May. A proven striker who has shown can score 15- 20 goals per season. And also some creative midfielders who can also score goals themselves.
As of today the squad couldn't score in a brothel.
There is a saying, usually now misquoted by among others Andy Scott, that the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
The proof is NOT in the effing pudding.
The proof ie the test, isn't in the process of making or baking the cake but in its final use, ie when it is consumed.
Right now the cake is still being mixed. Four new ingredients, players, have been added and some other ingredients discarded. But the mix isn't finished and more ingredients are being sought.
The baker has done well at other bakeries but he has yet to prove himself fully at the La Vallee Patisserie.
Right now, the cake mix doesn't look right and certainly not ready to eat but there is still some more cooking to be done.
Come 10 August we can all tuck into the first slice and see how it has turned out. Till then, it's too early to say it has or hasn't risen.
(this metaphor is now going for a lie down in a dark room)

Perhaps if you didn't write long rambling comments those of us with limited intelligence might get the point of your meandering pessimistic rant.
No one “guarantees” 20 goals a season. Certainly not playing for a middling League One side like ours. Alfie will very likely score a decent number of goals for whoever he plays for next season but nothing is guaranteed in football. And every year past 30, age gets more and more likely to catch up with Alfie - not that we saw too many signs of that last season.
I like Alfie a lot. I don’t agree with selling him and I think it sends all the wrong messages about the level of ambition at the club. NJ can give all rallying interviews he likes, this kind of move stinks of the last few years of cost control and trying to do it on the cheap. That stink won’t go away until someone provides proof of the pudding by actually getting us promoted. Selling your best player to a team you expect (or at least claim to expect) to be competing against for promotion makes no sense.
However. When you strip all that out and look purely at the numbers, buying a player at 30 for 250k, getting an excellent year out of him, and then sell him with just a year on his contract for 3 times what you paid - that’s not terrible business. But that is also an example of knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
It does appear that Alfie is not the best fit for the way NJ wants to play. Time will tell if playing the way NJ wants or adapting to fit a proven goalscorer will be the better option, but it seems we’re committed to NJ’s way, assuming he is comfortable with Alfie leaving. Even if NJ is all good with it, it’s a ballsy gamble buy fortune also favours the brave, sometimes.
What I would say is, as good Alfie has been, he doesn’t feel as talismanic or tough to replace as the last two big striker departures in Yann and Taylor. Maybe that’s unfair because we’d have been utterly screwed without him last season but, imo, he’s not as fundamental to way we play as those two were at the time they left. So maybe it won’t be so bad without him…. maybe…. but probably.

But the bakery has somehow lost some of its key ingredients. Flour (Dobbo), Sugar (May) and Butter (CBT).
Let's hope we're not tucking into scrambled eggs come August.

Before signing for us those guys were not on anyone’s radar. I only knew about Berry because Alfie told me at the end of the season because he was pissed off) That one aside we’re keeping stuff in house until it’s done. Nathan confirmed this last week.
I don’t just watch football from league 1, I talk to football people all over the world every day and I do my own research. This guy is raw but is very highly thought of where he currently plays. He could be a load of turnip or he could rip teams to shreds. We just don’t know right now. So there’s no contradiction. hes not known here, but I’m told he is very exciting and very good and the limited footage I’ve seen suggests potential. If we sign him we’ll see for ourselves but he could be a coup. A bit of a low risk punt

All four (Mitchell included) were linked with us, even if only in the SLP a while before the club announced them.
It wouldn’t surprise anyone if we signed any of Godden, Etete, Ahadme or Davies.
No doubt they’ll be working on potentially signing players not named yet, but I doubt there will be many signings this summer where we don’t hear rumours some time before they’re confirmed. It’s what’s happened with every signing so far.

I respect your posts a lot Swisdom and think your insights are interesting but surely you can't believe for example with Bristol Rovers chasing Josh Edwards in parallel to us is because their transfer strategy was 'Jones is after him, he must be decent'. Friend and the recruitment team there seem to have some kind of strategy falling into place at the moment.
I really don't want to have a pop, and maybe you're just an optimistic person generally but I am really struggling to see how with current events, you are remaining so positive about the evidence we're seeing at the moment, really 1/2 of our signings so far are unknown quantities as one has hardly played any games of professional football halfway into his career and the other has come from a league not known for producing players of much quality. Still awaiting for the events to unfold as they may, but it's hard to see how this shapes up as of today.

I get that the cake is still being mixed, but why are the ingredients salt, tapioca, muesli, rice and curry powder?
Yeah, dont disagree with that point, but I don't think you can blame previous managers being sacked on fans. Holden and Appleton were just poor appointments.

Yeah I don't disagree over Appleton, even if his sacking was down to our complaints, it can be the right one...
I just feel we've got to a point now where we have to find faith and patience in our next Manager, unless its Appleton levels, even if its a slow rebuild to where we want to go. As feels this whole rebuild over every summer (partly because of a new Manager each time), is one of the things really hurting us.
No they haven't? We'd known about Mannion, Mitchell and Edwards for weeks before they were announced officially.
You then contradict yourself in your second paragraph, because you've heard good things about the unknown quantity, who would also be a real coup to sign. Which one is it? 😂
But were all four linked after they were signed but not announced by the club? We dont & won’t know as I say Berry was highly likely to be coming to us in late April but we had to wait for the season to end, then holidays to be taken etc and it was finally announced some time later but I’m pretty sure it was buttoned up well in advance of the announcement ( hence the out-of-date berries in his announcement)
The names often get leaked once it’s effectively a done deal - it’s not a scoop. i dont know why it happens this way - presumably all a part of the poker matches these clubs try to play and not show their hand too early.
I believe Nathan when he said the players we have gone for were wanted by other clubs and I’m sure there are others - but the fact is 4 (so far) chose to come to us so I’d like to think we aren’t regarded as a complete basket case just yet
Been out at a forest alight all afternoon and now back at home I turn on Charlton Life, loads of posts, no signings and lots of sniping. Normal day. Might have another shower.

Daring to call Miles Leaburn, who fucking terrorises almost everyone he plays, a better footballer than Alfie May, gets you the all-time CL dunce cap apparently
Call this cope or whatever but May is not a 'guaranteed' 20-goal striker. Three seasons running doesn't 'guarantee' a fourth. Also, he just isn't our best player (Leaburn probably is)
Plus what people are not seeing is he can’t score 20 goals if he not in the team
Here's another wild take to get 20 LOLs or whatever. If Leaburn had stayed fit, Appleton would still be our coach now. This is no claim for Appleton being any good, btw, but Leaburn's one of the biggest difference-makes we've had in a very long time and there'd have been more games like Wigan away where he basically destroyed them for 75 minutes. For what it is worth Leaburn has more potential than most of our squad put together. The season before last he was tremendous before his injury, he just needs to avoid another injury.

I don't expect our business is anywhere near done, but they'll need to make at least 6 new signings of proper quality now if they have any hope of contesting, our squad wasn't up to much before, it's just got significantly weaker.
I mean if we suddenly start to get endless calls every week of: "Jones out" thats going to force the owners into a decision isnt it?
But we've already slipped past Nathan Jones "ideal" situation of having the bulk of the squad in by the start of pre-season. If this is "backing the manager" then I hate to see when he's not.
Big week ahead. 4 days then we play our first pre-season game. Then they are off to their training camp.
We need to have brought in at least another 5 players by then - one being a replacement striker for May. A proven striker who has shown can score 15- 20 goals per season. And also some creative midfielders who can also score goals themselves.
As of today the squad couldn't score in a brothel.

However. When you strip all that out and look purely at the numbers, buying a player at 30 for 250k, getting an excellent year out of him, and then sell him with just a year on his contract for 3 times what you paid - that’s not terrible business. But that is also an example of knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
Let's hope we're not tucking into scrambled eggs come August.
You still here Golfie🙄...thought you were done when Alfie was sold...or were you only kidding...🤦♂️
