Okay this is what I have been told. The club were informed that the pitch needed another two weeks to stabilise prior to the season's start. But they went ahead with the PSF vs Portsmouth anyway. It was this match that wrecked any chance of the pitch doing what it was supposed to. The plastic stuff never got the opportunity to blend properly with the real grass and is now mostly lying flat.
The weather, women's games, etc, etc is really not making any difference.

Obviously the club will not have any comeback on the installers if they did not follow their advice.

It will likely fix itself during the summer months.
    Who told you this?
  • cafcfan did.

Getting some grief from Gillingham’s Groundsman so gave him some back 😂

That’s akin to my opinion on “Kidbrooke Village” the old ferrier estate that I lived on for many years, you can’t polish a turd, and no amount of shit rolled in gold will make it desirable, you still have to step outside and find yourself in gillingham.
  • What’s the betting we still do the Corporate pitch hire at the end of the season ? 🙂
Does Judith Chalmers have a passport?

    An ex-player.
  • I was told similar by a director re: the Pompey game but they also said that the weather has been much wetter and colder than usual.

The weather is the same for every club. I don’t see many other pitches in a state like Charlton’s and some of them have not been given 750,000 in grant money towards it

Someone needs to own up and take responsibility over it.

To be fair the pitch at Wembley was shit when it was installed wasn't it.

It was…..but it was initially laid as an all grass pitch I think.

They moved to the same technology that we just installed but have not encountered the same problems.

Don't disagree.  Was just passing on what I was told.

1923 and didn’t help with a white horse running around on it.

They also have a whole pitch worth of grow lights, fans and investment in getting it right.

As for Gillingham, easier to grow a pitch when one of the ground doesn't exist

The 25 year old ‘Temporary Stand’?
  • So when the season finishes, I assume that new seed will be planted and the plastic threads will do as intended. Hopefully.
  • So when the season finishes, I assume that new seed will be planted and promptly eaten by the pigeons.
    Fixed that for you.

Jimmy Seed used to shoot the pigeons.

Perhaps we could have a word with Killer, he's probably still got his shotgun...🙄
  • Also heard we hadn't properly invested in the equipment we needed to look after it........ and we ended up needing to borrow the necessary from another London club........ the delay in doing so really didn't do it any favours at all......?

  • didnt we have a man with an Hawk? its probably been Charltonised and off injured.

I see the pigeons as our pigeons and have grown an affection for them. Also, if there is such a thing as reincarnation, they could well be Charlton fans catching some lunch at the same time as watching their team!
  • I was told by the Dartford groundsman that cutting grass too short means the pitch freezes harder.

That was me..... many years ago , and in some ways i have been charltonised  , my knees have gone .
A new legend is born!  Bring back the hawk I say.  Before every game!

    (Next bit off topic)

We had a pigeon problem at a place I worked once, but were told having a hawk in probably wouldn't work for some reason (too open or something?).  Anyway, a few weeks later, lo and behold, on the lawn out the back, I find a sparrowhawk lunching on one of the pigeons.  It was pretty amazing to see for the first time.

Do you still work with them?

No longer work for them , used to do lots of grounds around the country , the idea is not for the bird to eat the pigeons but the presence of it being around is the deterrent , if the Hawks does catch one and eat it thats their day over as once they have fed they will no longer want to hunt .
