I think that ship has sailed. I’d love a Charlton man with Curbs as an advisor . Fans would get behind Pearce but I have no idea how good a coach he is .
Unfortunately Powell wouldn’t be my first choice, can understand the sentiment behind it, but as others had said, think his time has gone, Duff or similar for me. Still think the senior management team needs replacing and until this is done, don’t expect anything to change.
On a sidenote does anyone know why he left both the England and Spurs coaching staff just to end up at Sheff Weds? Doesn't seem like a great career move.
Im a big fan of Powell and wanted him to replace Holden but not sure its the right time for him now. That being said I would still be happy to see him back anytime.
I think Powell or Bowyer would lift the mood. Both it can be argued have unfinished business having been shat on by the club. Powell was undermined and unfairly sacked, Bowyer probably should have been sacked before he left but this was because all the crap thrown at him after promotion. All you have to do is look at the three last times we have had any success amongst the scores of managers we have had and there is a pattern in terms of a link to the club.
Personally, I think Pearce would be a great caretaker and who knows from there. Fans will give him a chance which will take the pressure off him and it is little commented on, but pressure on the manager equates to pressure on the players. In the meantime, we could be looking for a manager who might not be such an unknown risk (I think Jones could go either way and what happens if he goes the wrong way) and if Pearce does well, we can stop looking. And if he doesn't he doesn't get sacked but gets slid back into his current position.
If Pearce doesn’t do well, which is very much a possibility as his ability to manage a team is completely unknown, then he will be getting slid back into his current position whilst we are in league two.
We can ill afford to take chances in the position we are in, and sentimentality has to be completely thrown out the window. We have to appoint someone who has recently been working and recently has success working at the level we are at.
Bowyer could very much fit that model, and I wouldn’t be adverse to him being in the picture. Though I’m still slightly scared by the end of his tenure.
If a manager like Duff comes in, gets us playing well and winning games, which he has proven to be able to do at his level very recently - then that is all we need.
Can we confine all the 'bring back whichever former manager' posts to this thread please? Powell, Curbs, Jackson, Bowyer, throw them all in here and spare the other threads.

The problem is there is an IF for any manager we might bring in. It would be obvious after four or five games if it wasn't working for Pearce and that would give time for somebody else with the squad we have. Now if Jones comes in and doesn't work we have to stay with him. My point is every appointment is an unknown but Pearce would give you an extra life... And could indeed work. He is a defender and that is where a lot of our issues are, he will be liked and respected and the fans would be supportive with him being a popular player.

Just like how appointing Les Reed gave us an extra life. Oh wait no, we got relegated. This is not the time to appoint a totally unproven manager with us looking down the barrel, and the idea that we could bring Pearce in for 5 games then chuck him and bring in a FOURTH manager of the season for lols is not a good one.

He wouldn't be brought in as a manager though. He would be in charge whilst we are trying to find the right replacement and only gives the board a decision to make if he does well which would be a possibility. Rushing a manager in doesn't feel like wisdom. Especially with Scott's track record of finding them.

Rushing a manager in is essential. We have 18 games left and whoever we get in needs as much time as possible with the squad as well as, ideally, a bit of transfer window time in case he realises there's a key part missing from his preferred system. Giving an untested academy coach 5 games just to make sure you've really nailed those second and third interviews doesn't give you anything positive. 5 games would take us towards the end of February, meaning whoever came in would have two months to save the season. It's a ridiculous thing to do. You've been fixated on the idea of Pearce as manager for a long while though, you were advocating for him after Holden left, so I think you're letting your fixation on him being given a chance and being so good he gets the role permanently override good sense. You think that the five games will reveal him as our managerial future but it's an insane gamble to take, especially if they don't even have the guts to name him as permanent manager. 'Hi lads, yeah I know you haven't won in 2024 and the last 10 games have been a failure but here's Jason, he's going to look after you for a few weeks and then we'll get someone proper in. Unless he's a genius am I right? Ha, but seriously, be nice to Jason, we've got managers to interview. See you in a month!'
Wouldn't be my choice, last managed in 2019 where he was sacked by Southend, before that failed at Huddersfield. A lot of love for him but don't think he's a great manager, nor what we need right now.
Totally agree. Ridiculous suggestion bringing Powell back in. If we are making appts solely based on emotion as clearly this initial post is doing ~ let's bring in Kinsella or Scotty Parker and have Jacko back as a number two.

Not a fan of interviewing a football manager. Surely you appoint somebody on their record, not their ability to bullshit Scott and Rodwell. I think interviews in football are there to make the interviewers feel important. I would say, if somebdy has done it before they might be able to do it again. If they haven't failed they may succeed.

What record does Pearce have at successfully managing a league one team?
There’s no doubt that he’d light up the place and most likely give the shell shocked players something to smile about but there’s a but. I dont think his record since that sublime season with us has given me at least confidence to think he’ll be able to repeat it. Gets tin hat.

Then what on earth are you doing for those 5 games you're giving to Pearce that you said were to find the right replacement? Running Football Manager simulations to see how it goes? Going on mini-breaks with potential candidates?
So me starting this post was a bit of a heat of the moment thing.. fear, anger desperation. I was feeling it all last night!
I agree there will be question marks but my reasoning was 1. that the club needs a huge dose of the feel good factor and players need to regain self confidence and quickly. 2. I have no faith whatsoever in this ownership group finding a suitable candidate by waiting for CVs to arrive and multiple interviews to commence where candidates will have to provide evidence of black box thinking and setting out key performance indicators yada yada yada.
We need a huge shot in the arm and quickly. Waiting for these dullards to come to a decision could just about finish us off

What record does Pearce have at successfully managing a league one team?
He doesn't but he doesn't have a record of unsuccesfully managing one. What I think people are getting hung up with on Pearce and indeed Fleming is forgetting that he isn't being appointed as manager and only has a chance of that if he is a quick success and maintains it. If it was announced either was our manager, I would be dead against it but a few games, which they can absolutely do well in, why not, and we might start to see it differently. Say we appoint Duff and he is no better than Appleton, and he may or may not be, but we are stuck with him.

It’s only perceived sluggishness though isn’t it. We don’t know if they have already sounded out possible appointments. That would be logical given our for over the last few months. I don’t think we can blame them for dragging their feet when we don’t know they are.

I should think they are less prepared now than after they gave Holden the boot.

I don’t think for the long term but I think he could do a job for us over the next 3 months. To get out of this relegation scrap we’re heading towards. That for me is the short term priority.
Chris Powell's success at Cafc was when they had a clear out. Powell, Chappell and Dyer used their contacts and brought in a whole new squad. The moral to this story is Chris is good with a squad he brings in his self with the aid of his assistant and his chief scout as long as the Scout has a professional football background and not on football manager. If CP turned it down before it was offered to Appleton (not sure on the timeline) then why would he want it under these circumstances ? Anything is possible and would probably have about 85% backing from fans even if it was a 4 month contract with a big bonus to stay up.
I'd be reluctant based on his first half season with us. He did not have his own players and we plummeted down the table, this included the notorious Dagenham and Redbridge game.
He has learnt alotsince then butits a big risk!
This squad is much better than the one we had in 10/11 IMHO.
Regardless, it’s unlikely CP would come at present. Alex Dyer is a different story - believe he would be keen to be involved.
Comments
great times and great memories lets not add a relegation scrap to it
his last good season was 10 years ago as a manager.
Shows how amateurish this whole shower is.
