Contradicts what’s been communicated to Swisdom and Dubai a bit if loans are going to be the focus
Again that wasn’t said, he said permanent bids are in and it’s a bit of a waiting game but if they don’t get over the line then it might have to be some loans until the summer but it’s not for the want of trying.
It was said, clear as day. I'm assuming he misspoke because he also said things that directly contradicted it, but he absolutely said it.
My take on that was that he was saying the longer term focus was to be buying and developing our own players - that's the plan. But they acknowledge where we are and so we might be getting loans in to fill gaps in the short term. But only if those loan players are better than what we've already got.
Which I think is fair enough and sounds sensible in theory. It's not a question of "just permanent signings" or "just loan signings", but if we can't get bodies through the door permanently then loans would help us fill in.
The question about Premier League loan signings comes in at around 1.22.50. And Rodwell says "for THIS January, as much as we want to bring in permanent signings that are going to help us in the long term, we understand that we need to start winning games immediately". And, "January tends to be more about loan signings than permanent, and that's probably where we find ourselves, but its been well reported in the media that we do have offers in for players to sign permanently that we think will help us in the long term".
To me that's not saying "our focus is on loans" FULL STOP. It just isn't.
He then goes on to say (1.24.16) that "if you're taking on a player from the Premier League you've got to believe he's better than our academy players. Where would we go and get a better young player than Karoy Anderson, for example."
That's not the same as saying "Karoy Anderson is the best youngster in the world". It's just saying where do we need to go to get a loan signing that's better than him. He then goes on to say that some PL loan signings work out brilliantly (Grealish, Gallagher) but "most don't".
All sounds fair enough to me. But don't take my word for it - have a listen back.
Not as bad as a Prince Andrew interview but not good.
Rodwell - "Where could we sign a better player from than Karoy Anderson?"
Oh do fuck off, if you believe that you're of no use to us.
To be fair he was saying we couldn’t sign another young player on loan as good as Anderson, not just a better player.
Does anyone think that this is true? There is not one young player in the world, that we could sign on loan, who is as good as Karoy Anderson?
He didn't say that though, he specifically name dropped JRS and already name dropped had been Gallagher and another (maybe Cullen?).
His point was that for PL loanee kids, there are not that many of that quality around so we would be picky and would rather play our kids like Karoy Anderson than a second rate loanee.
Essentially he was saying why get a Smith, Razak, Nile John type loanee ahead of an Anderson already in our squad. I think everyone would agree with that.
Whether Scott can pick out the JRS, Gallagher and Cullens is yet to be proven.
Saw that quoted on here before watching on replay. Finally got to that part of the meeting. Never seen something taken so far out of context...
It’s a bit of fun and hopefully KA has a good future in the game and with us. He looked great at Welling. ”Where would we go and get a better young player than Karoy Anderson, for example” is a bit of a daft thing to say, although this seemed quite normal compared to most things the him bloke to next said.
I admire your indefatigability (c G. Galloway) for listening to this stuff tonight.
I decided to give it a miss, the same as I give Appleton’s press conferences and interviews a miss. I don’t really see the point of listening to them. They’re just a demonstration of how good or bad they (and MA) are at the PR stuff, not much more.
They can claim to be ambitious, and set upon buying the best available players, and then not deliver.
Or they can say it’s a tough market in January, the right players aren’t available, but then pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Whatever their intentions are, the only way we’ll really know that they’re any good at running a football club is when they make good signings, and when we start winning matches.

He looked great at Welling. ”Where would we go and get a better young player than Karoy Anderson, for example” is a bit of a daft thing to say, although this seemed quite normal compared to most things the him bloke to next said.
But that wasn't what he said, was it? He didn't suggest KA was the best young player in the world and we couldn't possibly get a better player in than him.
Seriously, have another listen - I've posted the link and the timings above. That's genuinely not what he was saying.
Jim Rodwell is a chancer and has snake written all over him, he isn't as slimey as previous slimers such as Katrien and Southall, but he's not to be trusted.
Failed at Boston United, Notts County, Scunthorpe and then Sunderland.
It's fucking painful we have people like him representing us. I pay attention to what fans of other clubs said, and it's bad news.
All of those fan bases can't stand him, I sense a pattern. All he's done tonight is avoid difficult questions with generic responses. I can read him like a book. A mate of Charlie Methven who has gifted him a job. That's all it is, jobs for mates and when they likely fail here, they'll be off to another club who are in a bad way to take advantage of their situation.
It would be nice for one season to just have people in charge who aren't utter slimeballs. It's the exact same as having Appleton as manager, previous history indicates it's not going to work, so why the time given?
Safe to say, I am not optimistic after a re-listen. Appleton for the rest of the season, do me a favour.
Not as bad as a Prince Andrew interview but not good.

Does anyone think that this is true? There is not one young player in the world, that we could sign on loan, who is as good as Karoy Anderson?
My take on it was that he was saying when it comes to making loan signings we have to be thinking "do we want to sign a Premier League youngster for the sake of it - is he better than Karoy Anderson for example?".
I genuinely don't think he just said "Where could we sign a better player than Karoy Anderson". Genuinely.
Will be interesting to watch it back again to see though. But there you go - the three of us all have a slightly different take on what he said!
I'm happy to say that your description may be more accurate than mine. So we can't get in one Premier League youngster better than Karoy Anderson, who most on CL thinks probably needs to be loaned to L2 or The National League? (General question, not just to Off_it) .
No, he didn’t say that but what he said is silly as I imagine there are players of a similar age, especially in the two divisions above, that are better than Karoy and have potential for loans.
Anyway, I’m just having a giggle at it, not hitting him with a stick. There are more important things than Rodwell’s I ❤️ KA T- Shirt.
I think the point was that signing a Premier League youngster on loan shouldn't be an option just because he's a youngster at a Premier League club - is he better than what we've got?
My answer would be that there surely MUST be better PL youngsters out there. But whether they are available for loan - or available to us - is a different question.
I mean, right now I wouldn't want to join us on loan - and I've supported the club all my life!
I watched the program. My take was that they seem to think they have a plan but I wasn’t convinced that is the case. Basically though they have talked the talk so now we shall wait and see if they can actually walk the walk. I believe them that they want the club to be a success and at least they are not chancers and charlatans like Elliot, Farrell, Nimer, Southall etc, nor an egomaniac like Sangaard.
I’ve read all the comments before posting and I can’t believe how Rodwell’s comments about Karoy Anderson have been completely misconstrued by so many. I suggest some need to clear some earwax out.
Goodness. More fool me for thinking I'd be left feeling reassured. I'm not the biggest critic normally, but that was worse than I could possibly have imagined, and my expectations were pretty low to start with.
Rodwell suggesting he'd be alright for a lie in on transfer deadline day made me laugh. Still, as long as Andy Scott keeps doing fine work putting in a shift, no worries eh?
I'll credit them for the fan engagement effort, but they really shouldn't have bothered. I only hope their actions are more convincing because to me that came across as, well I'm getting the word, 'amateurish'
Well, seems I'm in the minority tonight but my back's broad....
I've read through the whole thread now & am somewhat disappointed that minor issues /comments have been blown out of proportion IMO. But hey, everyone's welcome to air their views.
Two " important " characters were missing this evening- namely Andy Scott & Charlie Methven.
Whilst I haven't met either ot listened in to any interviews they may have given recently, I must admit that I'm less positive about them & the part they're currenly playing in all this from what others have posted . AS's role is of vital importance, of course, but I'm not totally convinced about his credentials and that he's the man for the job... and CM seems to have hibernated now that the sharp end of the season is upon us. Maybe he's been gagged temporarily until the January window slams shut ?
I stick by my overall view of tonight's meeting though...maybe because I can't let myself continue to feel so negative & depressed, completely losing my enthusiasm for matches. There has to be an upturn soon. The thoughts of our beloved club dying is too devastating to contemplate. I WANT these guys to be the ones to take us forward before it's too late and the spectre of L2 looms ever closer.
Maybe MA IS the next Curbs. It would appear that he has the backing for now....but I remain unconvinced. Maybe Chuks will suddenly regain his fitness and go on to be our top scorer come May! Our 2023-4 POTY ! Maybe Fanny will throw in the towel & buy a Dorking season ticket !
Stranger things have happened....
For now, I'm hanging in there, still trying hard to keep the faith.
With the parking restrictions coming in, perhaps a double or triple level (non obstructive) car park should be being built behind the West to help with the surrounding car parking issue? Sounded like the car park (as-is) was going to be turned into something else?
Only other point I noted and underlined was on the striker comment, they do know that Alfie May is one of those, right? He cannot help that he is not 6ft 3, but could be used very effectively and centrally in a system with a bit of imagination. Found that a bit bizarre.
Overall no harm done and fair play them all sitting their frozen addressing the fans without feeling the inclination to pull out a musical instrument and give us a tune. That was a most welcome change!

removed pic was unflattering and unnecessary. Moment of stupidity…
Perhaps it's also a case of deliberately not wanting to sign Premier League loans because they cost money & block us playing our own Academy players in the first team?
I think we'd all prefer our own youngsters if they were ready, but they are not, which is one of the reasons we are sliding towards relegation.
A plan needs to be realistic & achievable. This was part of Duchatelet's plan as well. Play youngsters whether they are ready/good enough or not.
How else can you hope to develop them & sell them to reduce losses?
Obviously the answer is you loan them out until they are ready.
I interpret the Karoy Anderson quote as "youngsters from the PL SHOULD be better than Anderson, in theory, but if you bring them in and they're not, where else can you get them from"
Maybe more to do with people at the club (Appleton) not rating loanees we've got higher then our own players (Watson) as opposed to "Karoy Anderson is undoubtedly better than any player we can get in on loan"
So I’m supposed to believe the Club didn’t ask either the FA or Senda why he was chucked off a course and being charged for breach of regulations.
WALOOS!
This! FFS what shit management.
Rodders told me in an email “any complaint about a member of staff should be reported by the person making the accusation “ so I assume the FA/EFL were ignored as a third party.

I think you’re looking too hard into what was just a bloke talking through the thought process of how you try to identify appropriate youth prospects to take on loan.
Are they going to be better than what we have? No? Then probably not worth the effort of bringing them in.
(That does of course throw up a separate problem/contradiction given a couple of the loans from the last window… difficult to make the argument above in favour of a couple of them)
I for one am totally behind the 8+8+8 = 8th in the Championship within 8 months equation.
It makes perfect sense.
And if you don't have eight elite players, or have just sold the two you do have, just recruit any old injury-prone deadwood on loan and designate them as elite. Then you can balance the budget too. Ingenious!
Perhaps this brilliant winning strategy could be expanded into all aspects of the club- 8 chips per portion, 8pm kick-offs, 8 management consultants etc etc until we only have 8 fans left and can save money on expensive fan forums too.
All those bed wetting moaners that thought this management team were just a lot of waffling freeloaders on big salaries must feel pretty silly now.
Total waste of time, carefully scripted questions asked by a carefully scripted interviewer and carefully scripted answers that have nothing of real substance.
You couldn't have been listening properly then.
I think the people that came on to ask questions did really well and I also think that Charlotte did a pretty good job too - and she asked some questions towards the end that definitely weren't scripted.
I actually thought Lucy's questions were very good

I think that maybe the loans will be Appletons choice and if they sack him they will go back. Then we won't be stuck with players that won't suit a new managers style of play.
It scares me that anyone would think it can be done on the cheap , these owners are gonna be losing hand over fist . We have no product that’s going to see sponsors etc digging deep to get their business involved and help soften the blow of funding . It’s all charity from the likes of Swisdoms old man , with very little competition cos it’s a waste of money and just a passion to a few . The marketing team can do all they want but until we’re in the Prem and have a product non Charlton folk have an interest in they’re flogging a dead horse . The cost of getting to the Prem maybe softened if we have a miracle player to sell every few years but that doesn’t seem likely and even then the costs are ridiculous. By the time we do (no chance ) get to the Prem they’ll have spunked a huge amount and to even sniff at staying there you’d have to improve the ground etc and fork out loads to hold your own . … and that’s before training ground and The Valley ownership costs come in . I may be way out on this but comparable clubs like palace, Fulham, Brentford are they making gazillions in the Prem ?
Good luck to these fruits if they think they can beat the game but they’ll need a lot of luck to achieve this .
The planned use of (paid) consultants in order to build attendances is another idea that should be parked. Use the resources within the current supporter base
Firstly I’m trying probably unsuccessfully to write this from the owners perspective but I’m probably to much of fan as I’ve been supporting Charlton for around 65years.I admit I didn’t listen to the discussions.
Secondly I was an owner of a company (30 employees) that went through a restructuring from top to bottom as I was retiring and couldn’t be replaced easily (they are still looking). The restructuring took 3 years before I retired and another year after I retired and in fact it is still ongoing, we made it clear as owners what we required the SMT to achieve within certain time frames. Just add that obviously we didn’t have passionate fans listening to us, but the SMT was charged with padding on certain news / events to our staff,
We had many meetings with senior management team where these power point demonstrations where presented, where the SMT tried to put over what they where doing to achieve our instructions, and bullshit was used to try to convince they could achieve our requirements, but the skill is to understand and know it’s bullshit, and to see through it and keep the SMT on the correct path to achieve the owners ambitions. This can be subtle or frankly brutal by telling the SMT to cut the bullshit, this was done often and in no uncertain manner.
However a very wish man early in my career said to me when attending such meetings, listen to what is actually said (and presented) not to what you precived to have been said, ie do not go in with with preconceptions, if you do, you will always be disappointed. It appears from reading the various comments on here that some have these preconceptions and nothing the SMT can say will alter these, as only actions will convince them. We had the same problems with our staff, but slowly they chipped away and whilst some of our requirements weren’t liked, they did eventually see the improvements creeping in.

My mistake if that was the case, was commenting based on following the thread on here
Our American owners have allowed Methven to put together a group of people to try and get Charlton back to the championship. Methven has recruited the likes of Andy Scott and Jim Rodwell along with a few others. How much time they will be given to achieve this I do not know, but Americans can be quite trigger happy if things aren't working out.
Judging from what was said last night it would appear that Appleton will be given this transfer window to see what he can do. Plus with a couple of players returning from injury results should improve.
I think that by putting a group of people together to run the club properly the Americans are on the right track. My main concern is Andy Scott, I just don’t believe he has the skills to put together a squad of players good enough to get us promoted. Some of the players we have bought in over the last couple of transfer windows have been very poor to say the least.
Also I agree with the idea that you can't keep firing manager's, there comes a point when you have to stick with a manager and give him time to build a squad. Unfortunately it appears Appleton is that man and I really don't think he's up to it.
For what it's worth I predict Scott and Appleton will both be replaced sometime next season and we start again. How long our owners will want to carry on for without seeing results I have no idea. Anyway LLLABH.

Happy days are just around the corner.
Maybe the choice of player in that example is what has caused so much of the false OTT uproar
