I can only guess when this ref was a little boy building his favourite football stadiums out of Lego he’d always make sure they had a Sainsbury’s attached.
All four British teams finish top of their Europa League group. Superb.
I often find myself as a neutral being more invested in the British teams in the Europa and Conference Leagues, as you feel it means more to the clubs and supporters.
Europa League play off round will see the teams that finished 2nd in their groups play the teams that finished 3rd in the Champions League group stage.
the Europa League group winners (including Rangers, Brighton, West Ham and Liverpool) go straight into the last 16 in March.
Likewise, the teams that finished 2nd in the group stages of the Europa Conference League will play the teams that finished 3rd in the Europa League in a play off round.
The Conference League group winners (including Lille and Aston Villa) go straight to the last 16 in March.
Interesting that no British teams feature in these games at all.
Both because of the success of the British teams in the EL and ECL who all won their groups, and the failings of 3 of the British teams in the CL who came bottom!
