Europa League & Europa Conference League 23/24

Couldn’t see another thread.

Usually best to keep it separate from the Champions League one. (https://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/96570/champions-league-23-24#latest)

    Tough group for Brighton

Shame Klaksvik ended up in the Conference League after their run in the Champions League

    Some good away days though

    Opening day.

Early games featured a come from behind away win for Liverpool and a surprise defeat in Poland for Aston Villa.

Brighton, West Ham & Rangers all currently drawing 40 minutes in.

AEK take the lead in Brighton, just as I posted they were all level

    Thank goodness for VAR !
Poor decision made by Foreign Ref in booking the Brighton forward for diving when to the naked eye it looked a stonewall penalty.
Video ref makes correct decision and Brighton score pen.

AEK have scored two good goals but the Seagulls are missing Dunk at the back despite playing some good moves going forward.

Crazy. He waved away another one. Thankfully VAR is there to give another blatant penalty for Brighton.

Thank goodness for VAR for the 2nd time.
This ref is having a mare, 2 stonewall pens and despite being in a good position he has missed both.

    2-2

How have both the ref and linesman missed that foul on Lamptey?

    awful standard of officiating

The first one was a bit iffy as the Brighton player clearly felt the contact and just threw himself down.

But the second one ........ Jeez! What was the ref even looking at there not to have seen it?!

    League 1 standard ref.

I can only guess when this ref was a little boy building his favourite football stadiums out of Lego he’d always make sure they had a Sainsbury’s attached.

The most over rated stat in football ?
    Possession: 74% Brighton.
2-3 down after being mugged in the 2nd half.
  • Options
Yup, only 1 stat is shown on the screen for the whole game. The only stat that matters.

Ajax and Marseille the other 2 teams in the group. Home to AEK is probably the easiest fixture on paper.

Fantastic win for Rangers. Betis unbeaten at home all season.

All four British teams finish top of their Europa League group. Superb.

I often find myself as a neutral being more invested in the British teams in the Europa and Conference Leagues, as you feel it means more to the clubs and supporters.

Europa League play off round will see the teams that finished 2nd in their groups play the teams that finished 3rd in the Champions League group stage.

the Europa League group winners (including Rangers, Brighton, West Ham and Liverpool) go straight into the last 16 in March.

Likewise, the teams that finished 2nd in the group stages of the Europa Conference League will play the teams that finished 3rd in the Europa League in a play off round.

The Conference League group winners (including Lille and Aston Villa) go straight to the last 16 in March.

Interesting that no British teams feature in these games at all.

Both because of the success of the British teams in the EL and ECL who all won their groups, and the failings of 3 of the British teams in the CL who came bottom!

Good first half from West Ham, turned it round, now 2-1 up aggregate.

West Ham 3-0 up now and 3-1 on aggregate.

A big boost for the Premier league coefficient.

West Ham kicked off at 5.45 pm at the London stadium tonight, Thursday? Seems odd - can't imagine so many could get along to that or is the world of home working changing things to that extent?

    Edit- seems TV reasons, no surprise really;
    From bbc;

West Ham are playing at a kick-off time not often seen on English soil, 17:45 GMT.

That is because three other English teams are also at home in Europe tonight and someone needed to move to the early slot for TV reasons.

"It's a strange kick-off time for a football club in London," said boss David Moyes.

"We have got to hope that the fans can get through all the rush hour and that flexible working allows people to get to the stadium in plenty of time so we can get that backing we badly need."

Rangers kicked off at 5:45 too.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for the early kick offs to be restricted to matches taking place in time zones further east of ours? That way they’ll be starting at 6:45/7:45pm which is a bit more sensible for a working day.

I expect West Ham have been handsomely rewarded and not needed to admit they don't actually care so much abut their fans.
