Hector is an upgrade on Inniss and just the sort of experienced player we need alongside a younger player like Ness and I think Thomas is being kept on due to his end of season form and versatility covering left back.
Morgan has had plenty of chances and can't be knocked for effort but just doesn't have the consistency or quality needed to be a regular starter.
Clare is no defender and yet that is where he has played mostly for us due to injuries and lack of squad depth - we need proper defenders - youngsters if necessary to provide cover in defence rather than using players out of position. I don't think Clare is good enough to play midfield so a good idea to move him on.
I hope some of the players returning from loan can be offloaded too as apart from McGrandles none of them have done enough on loan to deserve a start in our team.
A bit sorry to see Clair given the heave ho……I liked his somewhat Cavalier attitude re wanting to push play forward, would like to have seen him given a run at playing midfield where I believe his talent might have improved….there’s no doubting that was where he wanted to play and it showed.
Would have offered Morgan/Innis a new deal. I thought Lavelle having a further year on his deal (Not guaranteed we will be able to shift him) and Thomas ability to cover LB probably made Innis redundant.
Will take an wait and see approach on Morgan decision.
Interesting to read about the conflicting reports re; deals offered to Inniss and Morgan. Likewise, I expect the Clare we bought two years ago and the wages he was on, aren’t the wages we want to pay him now (nor can afford). If Holden did offer them all new deals, albeit on lower money, that would be a bit worrying for me on 2 counts. One, he thought they still had something to offer, two, it would imply there’s a continued focus on cost cutting and that doesn’t bode well when it comes to being able to pay the wages of the sorts of players we need to get us out of this division.
You could also say that Holden has been a bit more ruthless in saying to those players, you can stay, but you’ll be on less money and see less game time so I can use what I’ve saved on you, to put toward better. Not renewing Clare and offering a deal to Hector May imply that.
We’ll all have our views, and some may be disappointed to see them go. For me, I won’t miss any of them. I wish Morgan good luck given he came through our youth system, but ultimately, if he wants a career where he can make an impact, I think that lies in league one. Wouldn’t be surprised if Clare got another league one team, not top end, and depending on what that club could offer him re: wages. Inniss, imo would be better off pursuing a career as a scaffolder, but can see him at somewhere like Sutton next season, maybe even Bromley.
The big challenge is do we have incoming owners who know what and how much it will take to get promoted. A repeat of the Jan window under CM (supposedly) and albeit it was a Jan window, would be a disaster, and a repeat of last summer’s window would be just as big a disaster
The other elephants in the room are the returning loanees. Only McGrandles imo has a shot of playing his way into Holden’s plans, leaving Mansfield, Kirk and Lavelle taking up room adding very little. It’s hard to believe any of them will be given another shot. Then we’ve got the injured elephant, Aneke. Our squad is a mess even if we had kept or keep some of the out of contract players on.
Nonetheless it's very positive news. We can't keep doing what we're doing and expecting different results. It goes beyond just ability, the mentality on the pitch over the past few seasons has been diabolical.
And I really trust Holden, with his psychological approach, to judge who he wants in his camp.
It's the same reason that Chris Powell told us back in 2011 ..... major clearout in order to change the mentality in the squad.

Inniss gave us some much needed height at the back and considerably more grit - unfortunately he didn’t really turn up with many goals from the back, his injury record was terrible, and had a real problem with the red mist.

Glad to see the back of Bonne, and Gilbey. Well done to Holden, now let's get new owners and give Holden who he needs by spending some cash! Finally why keep Chucks? Always struck me as a player who didn't want to play right back, hence his desire to always get away from that position whenever he was playing.

I feel a little sorry for Albie, as he always gave his all and I don't think anyone worked out what was his best role. He needs a manager and a club where he is given a long run in a defined role - unfortunately, Charlton is not suited for undertaking such an experiment.

I don't. He has had plenty of chances to show what he could do and didn't take any of them. I would be interested if anyone, who wanted him to stay, could tell me what he does consistently well. I hope he goes on and has a successful career but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not getting excited until I see who we replace them with, given the reaction to last year's list at the time, and how the replacement efforts panned out.

Clare worked well with JRS down the right. With JRS gone then no need to keep Clare.

Not even close. I think the last accounts suggested we were losing £10M an year excluding income from transfer fees. Based on that we would need to reduce wages by circa £200k per week to break even. The salaries of the players released won’t even touch the sides.
Breaking even is a total fallacy for a club like us in L1.
