If Broad was younger he could just have opted out of the India tour, which would have given him a long time off before next summer.

I remember that in the old days, senior players would occasionally skip a winter tour for family or burnout reasons
It was an extraordinary coincidence that those senior players felt sufficiently fit and able to commit to tours in the West Indies or Australia, but had terrible burnout in the weeks leading up to the selection of tour teams to Pakistan...
Indeed. It's amusing 20/30 years later, how the modern day senior players are regularly signing up for T20 leagues in the sub continent, including the PSL.
I worked in Pakistan for 2 years and got typhoid twice! But was pretty lucky otherwise. A few colleagues and visitors, when the security situation allowed them, were not so lucky - numerous mattresses had to be burnt and there were a number of coffins in the stores!
  • What a way to end a career, your last hit goes for 6,and your last ball squares an ashes series.all teams need a bit of luck,Australia  got theirs with the weather, and a Bairstow"misjudgement*,we got our with Nathan Lyons getting injured, dont want to piss on our parade, but the really missed him.
agreed about Lyons but didn't ENG had Archer out, Leach out then Pope injured and Wood only available part-way through? Not sure if AUS had any other injuries though
Dont think thy did,but Archer had hardly played for 2 years,we had ample cover for Pope, and Ali did great .Lyons had played around 100 consecutive test matches.

Yep, but not having cover is no excuse! Yes he was one of their best players, but ENG had more players injured. It's all the umpires' fault according to the surprisingly whining/whinging AUS supporters whose comments I've read!
  • Do Sky even send anyone over for an overseas tour anymore? He can spend the time in Isleworth and then do the home tests next summer
  • No guarantee Sky will even have the India series either. The BCCI usually ask for the earth

There's no way that series won't be broadcast in the UK

Is that the one Jimmy took his wickets at 15 and Root took 5/8.

Looking at the back pages of the newspapers, it's all about Broad, with Woakes who really was the star of yesterday, completely ignored.

But then I suspect that Woakes quite likes it that way.

The fact that the Aussie were pleased that Woakes didn't play in the first two tests with the Duke ball in his hand tells you everything.
Stats may not always tell the whole truth but the wicket taking stats are close.
  • Dan Norcross' predicted squad for the next home ashes:

Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley and Tawanda Muyeye as the opening options, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith - that feels like a strong seven batters.

James Rew is our wicketkeeper. We've recalled Sam Curran. Our spinners are Rehan Ahmed and Jack Carson.

Our fast bowlers Sam Cook, Ollie Robinson, Matt Potts, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue.

I've chosen our captain, it's Ollie Pope. That is our 16.

That came from a long "selector's meeting" on TMS during the rain break yesterday. Alastair Cook was part of that, and pretty insistent on Sam Cook being in the squad!

One player completely missing from their thoughts was Olly Stone, who sadly barely seems capable of playing a game before breaking down.

Archer and Stone have so much talent but seemed to stay as fit as Chuks Aneke.
I find it sad for all three guys and their careers.

  • Don't think there would be much argument on that beyond Bairstow/Carey.
  • Was surprised the Aussies never used Michael Neser given his excellent record in England with bat and ball.

that was hilarious, the "studio" being just some meeting room that was available and a couple of branded printed displays next to two chairs.
  • surely that is all that is needed ?

And, obviously, Green should have been included

  • 8/11 ENG but not sure about Bairstow

  • 8/11 ENG but not sure about Bairstow
Thing is its Baistow or Carey. Bairstow grew into the series and Carey got worse as it went on.
  • Bairstow averaged over 18 more than Carey and took 1 more catch.
  • Carey, and The Aussies didn’t have a sniff after the Bairstow stumping at Lords. Momentum changer. Carey can be blamed for that too.

The Aussies also didn't have a sniff after that ball change. I'm sure had that happened to us (and in Australia especially) we wouldn't have let that pass us by as we are happy to do even if it was the Umpires fault. Equally, had Smith gone up twice and change the bails round and Root and Bairstow had got out the next ball, we would have been all over him like a rash in accusing him of gamesmanship and citing "spirit of cricket".

How many more did he miss though? ENG didn't bat twice at OT, so Carey would have probably had more if he'd kept for another innings.

Am trying to be objective (as always) and not anti- Bairstow but I agree he got better as probably lacked match time. It was an horrific leg break (sorry couldn't resist the wording) that mostly occurs as a result of a motorcycle crash not a golfing 'incident'
  • Favourite stat from the series: Australia used eleven bowlers, only two of whom conceded fewer than four per over. Labuschagne and Smith.

Not sure about all this ball change nonsense. We have heard from the bowlers that the new ball had done nothing all series. The older ball had had the more impact. The umpire did the Aussies a favour. If it wasn’t for rain we would have won 3-2. Those first two tests could have gone England’s way too. They need to pipe down.
  • England were just miles better on and off the pitch after Lords. To not play a spinner at OT? Frazzled.
  • The trying to get the ball changed every so often by both teams was ridiculous in this series , the fact the neutral umpires chose what they did is not Englands fault but of course they benefitted the next day with how it moved

Alex Hales has retired from international cricket. I once walked past him at Lord's, he's 6'5!
