People seem to also be forgetting he made the header which won the penalty last night10

Genuinely baffles me what some people watch on here. Probably wasn’t his best game but he put a big shift in and put himself about as always. Every game he wins most of his headersfenaddick said:

But last night's tactic of long balls to Miles lost us possession too many times. Not easy playing Striker for us and as you say up against 3 big centre backs. Also think because of his size the refs don’t treat him that fairly18 -
The fouls given against him some of the time are a joke , same challenges in reverse are never given .
He’s a class act and probably our second best forward when Godden is fit .13 -
didn't think last night was his best game and first half I thought it highlighted how much we missed Kelman - there was a real lack of pressing on their back 4, it was too easy for them to bring the ball out
I like Miles but I think at the moment he's better as an impact sub and I'd like Tanto to be given a few game run starting3 -
They played a back 3, this is the 3rd game in a row a back 4 team has switched to a 3 to play against us. I would assume a big reason they are doing this is so they can play through our press easier. Kelman might have made a difference but I don’t think it would have been that differentElthamaddick said:didn't think last night was his best game and first half I thought it highlighted how much we missed Kelman - there was a real lack of pressing on their back 4, it was too easy for them to bring the ball out

Carey and Fullah behind Tanto on Saturday anyone?Elthamaddick said:didn't think last night was his best game and first half I thought it highlighted how much we missed Kelman - there was a real lack of pressing on their back 4, it was too easy for them to bring the ball out

That would be fun but I can't see us being that attack minded away at Wrexham. Probably one to start Tanto in though definitely!Scoham said:

Still think Miles is playing well and contributing there is more to come but I am happy overall with his performances14

He really should be putting that second half header away or at least hitting the target. He saw it all the way, centre of goal, but somehow glanced it wide.1
-
It wasn't an unopposed header though, was it? If it had been then yes, he should be hitting the target. He was up against a 6ft 3in defender, who has played 19 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, as well as games in the Bundesliga and umpteen games in the Championship.bolloxbolder said:He really should be putting that second half header away or at least hitting the target. A lot of people seem to think that because Miles is 6ft 5in he should win every ball in the air. Football doesn't work like that.
He will get stronger as he gets older and will in time, become a dominant force in the air.10 -

I'm happy with Miles's performance levels in the Championship.21 years old. Battled hard against two strong experienced defenders and won us a penalty with an accurate header to Doc, from a huge leap.An area for improvement for me would be to simplify his game a little - hold position and make the ball stick more frequently.12

I think a lot of the contrasting views here can be right. Miles didn't have his best game last night but as others have said he was up against 3 fantastic Championship defenders.
We need to remember what strengths Miles has. He isn't the presser of Kelman, he will win you headers but their aim isn't too accurate and he can be a bit rash/naive in giving cheap fouls away.
BUT for his colossal size, he is very quick at running with the ball. The second Fullah came on, he got a ball through the middle to run on to and he burned away from the defender. He is very calm in front of goal and he is very skilful.
The problem we often have is because he is massive, whenever he is on the pitch, we pump it up long to his head. He can offer more than this.7 -
I'm surprised by that stat tbh; it would be good if the people/companies that compile those could also put out a short video reel showing the events included in the stats. Otherwise it is hard to tell how effective those 12 won headers were. You'd think with AI this would be quite doable.fenaddick said:

At any rate, I want Miles to do well, I much prefer him with the ball at his feet though. Obviously NJ must have had a reason for last night's tactics, but for much of the match, long balls to the forwards seem ineffective.2 -
We also do that when it's TC and Kelman up front, not just when Miles is on the pitch.RC_CAFC said:I think a lot of the contrasting views here can be right. Miles didn't have his best game last night but as others have said he was up against 3 fantastic Championship defenders.

A big part of our game plan is going direct and winning the second balls. It’s why we’ve put together the midfield 3 that we have because they are all good at anticipating and getting on second ballssuperclive98 said:

I agree with this.mendonca said:I'm happy with Miles's performance levels in the Championship.21 years old. On another thread, there was a discussion about Kiefer Moore and how he only really started to look decent when he got to age 26 or so. At 21 he was released by Yeovil. We had him on trial and passed on him. He obviously had some learning to do and ended up becoming a much better player as he matured.
I reckon Miles might have a similar looking trajectory, although hopefully at a higher level as I suspect he’s better at 21 than Moore was.10 -
Sorry, you think Nathan Jones picks players based on their family history? Just, No.kimbo said:If his surname was not Leaburn he wouldn’t be in the team. He isn’t good enough, fed up pf his lacklustre performance. It’s a shame as pre injury he was good so do feel for him. But should be dropped. Sorry!9 -
Miles looked a completely different player last night to the one that came on against Swansea, unfortunately not in a good way. Found him a tad frustrating last night.1

I totally agree with this point. We also try to go beyond the full backs to get the defence turned.NabySarr said:

My point was that we don't play that way just because Miles is on the pitch, as was suggested.1 -
Which was lacking a bit in the first half. This weekend will be interesting. Two teams who love to fight for the second ball.Double sufferballNabySarr said:

Same! Always looks like he puts in a shift and tries. I do think he holds a little back, but due to his injury record, so im ok with it. Would rather he be fit 90% performance than injuredNabySarr said:

It was Leaburn's header in the box that lead to the penalty.Arthur_Trudgill said:

Need to manage him this year to try and get through the season broadly injury free. That would be massive for him, and would really allow him to kick on next season. I am sure the succession of thigh / hamstring injuries will be on his mind, but his overall sharpness does seem to be coming on now, and his pace certainly seems better.4

I can see Miles getting a red card soon based on the ridiculous double standards being applied by refs purely based on his size. He's getting visibly frustrated by it.
Similar to Chuks when he was just too strong for some defenders so refs assumed he must have been fouling them.5 -
He'll get himself booked for a stupid challenge, and then he'll get himself sent off, for understandably arguing with the ref over not getting a FK for something similar - Remember him against Wycombe at the Valley last season where they deliberately got under his skin which earnt him a booking.AllHailTheHen said:I can see Miles getting a red card soon based on the ridiculous double standards being applied by refs purely based on his size. Be interesting to see if he starts at Wrexham after 45 minutes on Saturday and 82 last night. I think Jones will want to start him, especially because Wrexham are one of the more physical opponents we will face this season, but 2.5 games in a week is a risk with LeaburnDamoNorthStand said:Need to manage him this year to try and get through the season broadly injury free. A striker called Leaburn dividing opinion, who’d have thought it6

No I don’t. It is a mystery to me why he is picked TBH. It’s the crowd that give him more rope than othersHi Athletico Charlton said:

With all due respect for all his size miles isn’t physical enough so if that’s why you would pick him I don’t see the point. Might aswell start Tanto he’s possibly more physical and quicker. Basically miles needs to do better.NabySarr said:
