  • Kanu is an athlete with a great attitude and work ethic but I’ve  seen minimal footballing ability in him , never feel he’s comfortable and in control of the ball , Leaburn is on another level and looks like he has much more potential
Crazy how we all see things differently. Leaburn resembled a new born giraffe last night and couldn't trap a bag of sand & yes I know he's rusty but I wouldn't say he's on another level. He's better technically than Kanu but I think they're both completely different players and bring different things to the squad.

It's a crazy comparison and they're obviously nowhere near this level but remember Man United in their prime with Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo. Somehow Danny Welbeck still used to get into that team and it wasn't for his goalscoring ability. He would be the work horse that pulled defenders out of position and pressed them into making mistakes and run the channels. That's the kind of player Kanu is.
    .
  • Leaburn wasn’t great last night but shows in glimpses there’s something there
Kanu can run fast , he rarely strikes a ball properly and hardly ever looks comfortable
one will more than likely have a career above league one and one won’t and I know where my money would be

If previous behaviour is anything to go by, I can see the board looking to cash in on him in January if a new contract is not close to being signed.

Call me mental too, but I think he’s a better all round player than Stansfield, he’s a year younger than him too, and look how much Birmingham paid for him. Leaburn under a decent length contract is worth millions to us and just the same with how our chances of success on the pitch improves with Miles in the team.
That's a pretty wild take. Stansfield has a handful of PL appearances, almost 50 Championship appearances, and has been capped by England at U18, U20 and U21 level.

Leaburn has done none of that yet.

It's not wild at all. Players are signed based on potential all the time. Off the top of the head, Shelvey, Jenkinson and Gomez were all signed for big money off the back of arguably less achievement or impressive performances or CVs than Leaburn has now. Theo Walcott. There are I'm sure other more extreme examples than any of those.

And, even if you are doing it based on actual CVs, I think you're grossly exaggerating Stansfield's CV Vs Leaburn anyway...

    1) a few england youth caps don't necessarily mean much at all - at youth level you are probably largely picked based on the club you're playing for (i.e. prem or not). The current England U21 squad contains 1 Lg 1 player, the 3rd goalie, + Stansfield - then basically all players from Premier league clubs. There are millions of players with loads of youth England caps who achieved absolutely nothing in the game (see Osei Sankofa).

    2) Stansfield managed 12 Champ goals last season in 43 appearances. He did this at the same age as Miles Leaburn is now (20). Miles Leaburn scored 12 League 1 goals in 35 appearances aged just 18, and quite frankly I would be pretty confident of him managing similar at Champ Level if he was playing there right now.

I'll give you Jenkinson but both Shelvey and Gomez had played for us in the championship and both had England youth caps. I don't think many people would agree with you they looked less impressive than Leaburn. It was clear to anyone they would both go to the very top level.

Not sure Walcott is the best example. He had a 15-16 year Premier league career and got almost 50 England caps. If Leaburn manages even half of that then he will have had a very good career.

In any case i'm not arguing that Leaburn isn't a good player, my point was in response to Sage saying he's a better player than Stansfield. One day he might be, right now he's not.
The point about walcott was he was signed for enormous money based on barely any CV. He was signed judged on what scouts could see in him, not on the fact he had X number of appearances under his belt. And with that in mind, scouts could quite conceivably watch Leaburn and Stansfield and say actually Leaburn is or could quite quickly be the better player... not the best time to make that case after last night, but equally Stansfield was benched in L1 last night so...!

He's rusty but still looked acres ahead of Ahadme and Kanu.

His problem tonight was trying to take everyone on in the box instead of just passing or hitting a shot.
Harsh on Kanu. Although over the course of a season I think Leaburn would score more every time I see Kanu play he adds something to the team usually thanks to his work rate. He was superb against Birmingham.

How about the two easy chances he missed? I get that he works hard for the team but ultimately his job description is to score goals. Against Birmingham, he managed to miss the target from 3 yards
All strikers miss the odd easy chance. Given his lack of match football no surprise that Miles isn't sharp (yet).

Kanu was unreal for the u21s he needs to be playing regularly right now.
  • That said... he was toss tonight

He was out for 11 months and had a couple of good dribbles including the 1st minute. Miles has an hour under his belt and will get sharper.
    You’d like to think so.

I thought it was just me. He used to play with a smile on his face but he's looked pretty miserable on the pitch every time I've seen him.

That’s what a couple of lengthy injuries will do to a lad you’d have to think…

Tbf I hadn't seen the video when I commented.
  • I noticed a Charlton fan was claiming on Twitter that we had an option to extend Miles’ contract, and that Charlie confirmed that to this fan.

Now the fan has deleted those posts on Twitter. I don’t recall seeing anywhere that we had an option on Miles’ contract?

I agree when he broke through he seemed alot more happy and as you say smiley

even before the big injury i noticed this and it seems more so now even when he scores

not sure if that is just him as a person now thats growing and doesnt show much emotion but does seem odd
  • Did we even know there was a one year extension clause in Miles' contract? Feels like new, useful information

Someone mentioned it above but there wasn’t anything on the OS
  • Contract extended by one year to July 2026 as per cluase in his contract.
  • It’s on the Instagram page. It’s been extended
  • I’m guessing there’s a few clubs annoyed that they won’t be able to take a punt on him
    as cheaply anymore
  • Similar to Small then we couldn't agree terms. Gives us a chance to get something for him in the summer

Good news that he won’t be moving on for pennies in the worst case.

A longer deal if the offing I hope, but if not at least the club is in a position to negotiate a transfer fee.

Excellent news.  Hopefully we can see him fully fit for the rest of the season, smash it and then keep him in the Championship for next year or sell for a significant profit in the summer.  Also he has been offered a new deal.

Hopefully we can get Small and Jones signed to new contracts soon as well.
