Kanu was born on New Year’s Day 2006.
Miles Leaburn was born on 28th November 2003.
They are 16 and 18 respectively.
What were any of us like at that age?
It will be heartbreaking if we have to depend on those two lads as our strikers next season and hear the lumpen abuse if they are inconsistent.

Kanu was born 14th Nov 2004 and is 17 (18 this year). But your point definitely stands.
I must have looked at the wrong information.
One becomes 18 and one 19 in four months time.
I reckon being sportspeople if invited to play both would say bring it on, after all Pele was scoring in a World Cup Final when he was 17!
Experience teaches us that Pele was a one off, very arguably the greatest ever.
Daniel and Miles should be managed expertly and backed up by us supporters as if they were our own children, our own brothers.
    NOT slaughtered.
(we could still cut Albie a bit more slack than we do)

Chucks is an absolute shambles for our club the decision to bring him home was a shocker. How we are going into the season relying on this injury prone player says we are not going anywhere fast
Chuks gives us something that no other club has and I think that he is an invaluable part of the squad. If we still only had 3 subs then he is more of a luxury, but now you have 5 from 7 it is brilliant to have someone of that strength and quality to bring off the bench against tiring defenders. Am hoping he will really prosper with the way we are going to play this year tiring out the opposition with a high pressing possession based game.
    Spot on in my view.
  • Not a rumour but i wonder if Nathanael Ogbeta  (Swansea left back) would be someone of interest to us, not in Swansea's plans so maybe a loan or a small fee would get him.
    Did he play Saturday?

Played over 50 times for Shrewsbury,so knows the Division.

It’s only a shambles if we don’t sign another striker. Aneke is very useful at this level. His last season in league 1 he scored 15 goals for us. Like we saw last season if you rely on him to start every game then he will break down, but the season before we managed his minutes so if we do that again he’ll easily be worth it
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to successfully manage his minutes pre season so asking him to replicate his last season in L1 looks like a big ask.
Currently the pressure on JS being asked to start upto 2 games a week is too much as he will get niggles even if he manages to remain injury free. So unless we spend money on a striker who looks as though he can weigh in with 15+ goals, which is likely to incur high wages and a separate problem in itself, finding one isn't going to be easy.
  • No, they have views based on what they see which are often proved right. What you hear from the club and indeed the manager is not always the full picture and you are allowed to assess things from a distance. Especially on a forum.
Agreed. Obviously all football managers and coaches know more than we do, but it doesn't follow that they get everything right or can't be questioned.

No he played their first few friendlies but seems to be out of favour now.... came from Man Citys youth team so might be ok.

Agreed. Eddie Jones likes to call his subs "finishers" rather than impact subs. Whatever, Chuks can be that luxury player particularly within a 5 subs environment. But like others I think we need more options at front who can play the first 60-70 minutes of any match, otherwise there is the potential that by the time Chuks is brought on a game is out of our control. We look overloaded in options for the midfield and a re-balance towards more options up front and left-side of defence seems obvious. It needs to be addressed and preferably not left until end August when half a dozen games have been played.

    Have to agree with you.

My understanding is Leaburn will not have much game time in first team this year and Kanu is far to young.

Leaburn will be much stronger this time next year and worth more to Charlton if we wait.

Striker or two will be incoming before this transfer period is closed.

Of course a striker will be coming in. Unless we find a free transfer (imagine they would have been snapped up by now, if any good) we have to wait until bigger clubs are willing to release there player.

For example, Lyle Taylor is still at Forest. Zero chance he remains at Forest after the window. Thus, when these players get a move it releases championship clubs to allow there younger or squad players to go on loan. Can imagine there are clubs waiting for us to sign someone so they can take Gavin on loan etc.

Losing Aneke for August would be a disappointment as we can’t really risk going with just Stockley & Leaburn for first month.

A terrible fitness record meaning that we have a key player who can only play 30 minutes?
Won’t even be playing 30 minutes this weekend.

I am trying to be optimistic, but if we start the season hoping Stockley remains fit it is pretty hard to. Forgetting how he fits the system or not. That might normally be a problem for December, but in July/August it doesnt bode well. We saw how successful we were last season without any half decent strikers. It isn't a leap in the dark FFS!

Have they had a lot of outgoings? Must be pretty unusual for a team to still not have a single signing the week the season starts

It is crazy that the transfer window stays open for a month after the season starts. It means very few lower division teams can properly restructure their squads before they have had 6/7 games. Only those who have carried over their squad from the previous season benefit.

I may be wrong, but I think that if you want to play passing/pressing football with quality it is normally more expensive than clear short cuts like long ball for instance or even more conventional systems. That is because more skilful players cost more surprisingly enough! And weak links spoil the passing, basically you need more quality players. This is fine, but if you don't fund this style, surely we would have been better trying to identify the biggest gaps/issues last season and resolve them or get loads of cheaper athletic players and bully the crap out of opponents.

When Wilder got out of League One with Sheff United - he had one talented player (Blonde no.7, can't recall his name) and the rest were physical bullies.
  • Have see Rak-Sakyi mentioned a couple of times, if you can overlook the fact he plays for palace he looks the perfect player for what we need. 18 goals in 25 games in PL2 and has played a lot of palace’s pre-season. All our wingers are better on the left as well and are all right footed, so a left footer is ideal

He also had barn door Billy (as my Leeds supporting mate calls him) banging them in.

Can probably rule that one out as our old friend Nixon says we're trying to get him. Also read that Oxford and MK are after him too.

He'd be a great loan signing i think.

    Yes, you need that too

I don’t think Mark Duffy, John Fleck, Matt Done, Stefan Scougall, Kerron Freeman were physical
    specimans.

Also seems harsh on players Jack O’Connell, John Fleck, Billy Sharpe, Chris Basham. And Kerron Freeman to not say they are talented when they went on to play in both the championship and premier league for Sheffield United.
  • Mark Duffy - that was the player. Did you not see them bully us off the park at the Valley? Maybe you didn't go.
  • Stockley
    Washington
    Davison
    Aneke

were all injured at one point. I'd like us to be adequately covered. Playing somebody like Leaburn as a central forward with non-goalscoring wingers will not be good for his development.

Apparently (according to Nixon!) MK have pulled out and are signing someone else. Oxford and us are 2 that have been mentioned but I would guess a fair few league 1 teams will be in the race

I know someone who works for Nigels and will try and find out whether any truth to it. Under the impression he was going to be kept in the first team squad.

They signed that Ebiowei from Derby who's impressed in pre-season so i think he's jumped ahead of Rak-Sakyi, hence they might loan him out.

They also have Zaha, Olise and Eze so not much chance he'll get many games in a wide forward role.
  • Id does seem to be an issue in that you need a bigger squad to cover injuries you might get.
  • Mark Duffy - that was the player. Did you not see them bully us off the park at the Valley? Maybe you didn't go.
So you think for Chris Wilder’s overlapping centre back style of play which he introduced at Sheffield United, that they only had one talented player and the rest were physical bullies?

Or do you think that all the centre backs were probably comfortable with the ball at their feet?

Indeed here is a quote about their tactics from this article: https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2019/sep/07/shift-from-power-to-possession-allows-chris-wilder-to-set-centre-backs-free

But the broader point is that Wilder and Knill’s solution to the issue of a massed defence would not in the past have been possible. Football is quicker than ever and yet it has become increasingly a game less of power than of strategy.’
