Charlton Only - January 2022 Transfer Rumours (Deadline Day p.97)

Possibly, but we still get the chance to assess him between now and the end of the season. If we've got him cheap, it won't be all that different to paying a loan fee anyway. Of course, having him on a 2.5 year contract wouldn't be ideal, but it's not impossible that he plays so well he's got Championship interest come the summer anyway and we'd therefore not have been able to sign him permanently anyway.Cafc43v3r said:
I don't disagree with any of that but it took JFC more than 2 years to become the player he was. Maybe Browne is close already, maybe he isn't.DubaiCAFC said:
The player or Boro are prob not interested in that, more they want to free funds and a space up now. I think it is a good deal for Charlton, they are prob picking him up on the cheap now, and build him up for next season. Good age at 24, hungry, point to prove, lots of potential!Cafc43v3r said:Isn't this the type of deal where a loan until the summer with a view to a perm would be the best route?
Forget about this season but it adds question marks to next season as well, which we could really do without.0 -
True, but I think the concern is not necessarily whether he can recover from the injury, but whether he can get back playing anything like he was previously. The medical team can sign him off of course, but that doesn't mean he'll fully recover.AndyG said:Surely with something like this you have to put your trust in your medical team ? if they have assessed the player and give the green light then it nothing more to be said. Good player, good age, whats not to like ?3 -
Exactly we've have players who've passed their medicals, but clearly are shadows of what they were before. Harry Arter this season, the likes of Joe Ledley or Rhys Williams previouslycafcfan1990 said:

I know these videos can be dressed up but he's some player.
Excited if this one happens.

Every signing is a gamble, however the likes of Forster-Caskey and Bradley Dack get one ACL, then another follows not long after that.Still young enough to still have a decent career. Bit of luck if we do sign him he won’t fall into the Bogle, Maddison, Schwartz, Souare box.18 month deal would be sensible2

Agreed on the 18 month deal.shirty5 said:Every signing is a gamble, however the likes of Forster-Caskey and Bradley Dack get one ACL, then another follows not long after that.Still young enough to still have a decent career. Difference with this guy is he will have half a season plus an entire summer to find himself again, there’s no pressure on him coming in now for a fairly dead 3 and a half months. It’s only a real gamble if he gets a massive long term contract.2 -
Dack has struggled following his ACL recovery.
We will be signing a player that is now different to the youtube reel, just be aware of that.1 -
Hope the deal includes a couple of walking sticks...Maccn05 said:Hopefully he’s fully recovered and the same player as before. Not often I’d say this but when you see these comments a loan with an option certainly feels safer

There is no way he can be anywhere near match fit. Not sure he has been on a pitch inanger since 2020. Unless he has been playing in their reserves0
-
That's why its clearly one for next season and hopefully beyond.3

Are we signing Jack Russell?Swisdom said:
Jack Russell is spot on. I said waspish. Decent little player I thoughtBR7_addick said:All the talk of Paddy Lane for them on Saturday, I thought the kid on the other wing was a right handful, Cian Hayes.Clare struggled against him first half, he’s only 18 was like a Jack Russell with his pressing and general wing play.
Liked Matete too. Great athlete a bit of a Lidl version of Kante0 -
I think what I was getting at is what if any injuries did he have before his ACL, looks like none. I would not call one injury being injury prone but I do get your point that it could lead to further problems.Cafc43v3r said:
Neither was JFC injury prone until he did his ACL, then a year of muscle injuries, then did it again. He isn't injury prone but has basically missed 3 seasons.Clarky said:
It keeps getting mentioned he is injury prone but apart from the serious one that he is recovering from what else are we talking about?cafcsinger said:I asked my Boro mate what he's like.
'Injury prone so fits the bill at Charlton, there's a good player in him but needs to play week in week out. Also highly doubt he can play wing back'
Don't think we will want him as a wing back but as competition for or instead of Lee.0 -
I enjoyed the Browne YouTube video, but have seen others that weren’t lived up to. Let’s hope he’s still up to that standard. Looked pacy too, at that time.cabbles said:
I haven’t, so can’t pass comment. I think the problem stems from the fact we’ve had a lot of poor signings over the last few years. Even the ones that we thought were potentially going to push us on, haven’t really pulled up trees.JamesSeed said:Surprised to hear so many definitive comments about whether Browne is or isn’t what we need. Has anybody really seen enough of him to reach a conclusion? Serious question btw, I’m not having a dig.I watch the Quest highlights show, but don’t remember seeing him play (although I don’t pay 100% attention to the Championship matches). At the moment, until we start performing a lot better, I expect more skepticism on the players we’re bringing in0 -
I think the club employ people who know more about ACL’s than any of us and if they doubted his recovery or chances of regaining full fitness in anyway we wouldn’t be signing him.6
-
Yes because we have such a proven track record of not signing injury prone players. 100% faith 🙄Bournesnr said:I think the club employ people who know more about ACL’s than any of us and if they doubted his recovery or chances of regaining full fitness in anyway we wouldn’t be signing him.
The club employ people who know more about lots of things doesn't mean they are always right about them all either.3 -

It should be said, there are a lot of players in football and other sports who come back from a torn ACL and go on to have a long and storied career. We shouldn't let JFC's experience color our perception of all ACL injuries. But there's a level of risk with Browne that as he comes back he could have muscular issues, or that he could reinjure the ACL.
As I said above, it sounds like the quality is there. Given that we're in League One, there are always going to be trade offs when we sign a player from a league above. And that's the case with Browne. My biggest concern remains his best position and how he fits into a 3-1-4-2/3-4-1-2.

Just trying to wrap my head around why giving JFC a contract for a year (when he's unlikely to play at all) after going through two ACLs is a good thing while signing this lad who by all accounts is back fit and ready to play is a bad thing.

I think both are good things, they just both involve risk. For JFC, getting a quality L1 player and our reigning POTY for half of a season is probably worth the deal. I'd imagine he had something of a wage reduction and will be on less than Browne.Callumcafc said:Just trying to wrap my head around why giving JFC a contract for a year (when he's unlikely to play at all) after going through two ACLs is a good thing while signing this lad who by all accounts is back fit and ready to play is a bad thing.
For Browne, I'm not clear if he's back and ready to play, but I imagine the wages will be higher and length of contract longer. For those talking about an 18 month deal, I can't see him moving down to L1 for less than 2.5 years. I mean maybe 18 months with a club option for another year, but I really doubt it.0 -
Maybe because they've seen what's happened with JFC?Callumcafc said:Just trying to wrap my head around why giving JFC a contract for a year (when he's unlikely to play at all) after going through two ACLs is a good thing while signing this lad who by all accounts is back fit and ready to play is a bad thing.
I'm fine with the signing personally as it's looking to the future, getting a better deal on a highly rated player now rather than letting someone else have a punt and having no chance of getting him in the summer.
Was it Lee Bowyer that once said if a good player becomes available to you you have to get him? Granted, I think he may have been talking about Maddison but the point is true.0 -
Standing by JFC when he did his was 100% the right thing to do. He did it playing for us.Callumcafc said:Just trying to wrap my head around why giving JFC a contract for a year (when he's unlikely to play at all) after going through two ACLs is a good thing while signing this lad who by all accounts is back fit and ready to play is a bad thing.
If Browne is fit and able to play and his rebuilt knee, that was an issue before his ACL, is now 100% it's not an issue. Until he trys no one, even experts, KNOW, then can make educated guesses.2 -

Good business to be honest. Both the same age, one’s a Londoner loving up north and the other is a northerner in London.Scoham said:Kirk to Blackpool ok loan with option to buy said to be close

Be interested to watch a Blackpool game if Kirk starts and see how it goes.0

Agree, do people honestly think there’s no risk analysis, assessments and objective/subjective discussion when an asset is purchased, it’s a business after all. It could still go Pete Tong but like you’re eluding too we absolutely do not know best in these instances.WSS said:Not like the fans who always know best.2 -
100% he'll play like the second coming of George Best and we'll all be up in arms that we've pre-agreed a fee of 250k for the summer.mendonca said:Be interested to watch a Blackpool game if Kirk starts and see how it goes.2 -
