I agree with this. If he can stay fit I think he will also become captain.
Not sure there’s enough info to decide that Lavelle is better than Inniss. From what I’ve seen (all his first team appearances) Lavelle looks very useful, but Inniss, when fit of course, is more of a game changer. Lavelle is perfect back up when Inniss is out though.
  • Lavelle would have been a very useful replacement for Inniss on monday night. More like for like than Pearce.  And Inniss won't play every week sadly.
Surely, the reason Lavelle was signed was to cover for the injured Inniss?

Decent CB in his own right, spot on attitude.
I wouldn't move Clare; and Famewo is solid enough defensively.

Right now or at least when judged ready to play, he is cover for Inniss.

I think that Lavelle has the big problem that he's not Inniss.

He's a decent defender at this level at least, probably a very good one with a run in a settled defence. But he's lost his place to Inniss who is a bigger, faster version of him.

Clare's unexpected renaissance as a defender won't have helped either.
  • Lavelle is 100% our best defender under contract for next season.

Well maybe second after Clare :-)

Nah not having that. A fit Ryan Innis is by far the best we have. It's the fit part that's the issue.
They say in the NFL: the best ability is availability.

Lavelle guilty of that too in the last couple of months but he doesn't have a track record of being out. He had played 140 times for Morecambe in four years prior to signing. No doubt that's 140 lots of 90 minutes.

Inniss has played about half that number in the same period and can only manage 20 games a season - 20 games of 60-70 minutes apiece.

I enormously disagree with this statement .
  • I think that once he's back involved he'll surprise a few who have already condemned him as useless for being part of the Adkins squad.

No doubt we'd be hearing the same things about Dobson and Clare if they hadn't played since October.

  • I think he lacks pace , but not bad in the air .
Inniss is better in my view  .
  • I like him and thought he was decent in a struggling side.

Like Dobson and Clare, good players in a poor formation, he may look even better in a back three. We shall see.
  • this is all very good, but is he fit to play
  • Clare's presence in the team isn't that relevant to Lavelle, as Jacko nearly always doesn't play 3 "proper" centre backs in his formation.

Can Lavelle play alongside Inniss, with one in the centre and one on the left?
  • If you're going to play 3 and they have the license to overlap, you need one who can do what Clare did on Monday night, which I don't think is Lavelle, he's more in the mold of Akin or Ryan.

In my view, he's fighting with Inniss and Pearce for the central position.  He looked like a league 2 centre back to me, although as has been said, we were shipping goals under Adkins and he might be better in this system.
  • Take him and Lee to CERN and smash them together until we have a decent reserve DM, obviously
  • Will hopefully be a nice problem to have, having 4 options for 3 places, rather than the normal 2 and a "he'll have to cover".  Inniss isn't going to play week in, week out either.

May make Clare at RWB an option too.
Agree that Clare could be a very good option at RWB.

Only with a similar player replacing him at RCB. Part of the reason 3 at the back is becoming more common is it can help you play out from the back and the wider centre backs can sometimes get forward to support the attack. We’d lose what Clare brings if we played three traditional centre backs.

Can't you tell Iniss that they have both been dissing him behind his back,  he could no doubt bash their heads together just as quickly and agressively as a Hadron Collider?

Yes, Clare has become a key player for us. If anything, we need to be finding the left footed version of him because teams have started to press Clare and force us to come out down the left with Famewo. Famewo is actually pretty comfortable on the ball for a League One centre back but he’s never going to drive forwards like Clare can and his passing is erratic, to say the least. I think that’s part of the reason we’ve seen Matthews and CBT back in the side. A more defensive right wing back offers better cover for Clare and gives him more licence to drive forwards, and a more attacking left wing back balances the side better and gives use someone who can exploit the space if the opposition focus on pressing Clare.

Lavelle is competing with Innis for the role as defensive anchor at the centre of the three. I think Innis is better right now but Lavelle certainly has potential. The great thing about him is he can offer a lot of the same aerial dominance that Innis does and has already caused other teams problems at set pieces. I like Pearcy, but we lost a bit of something in both boxes when Innis was injured.

Although, with our hero languishing on the Huddersfield bench (spared from the hell of St Andrews thankfully), perhaps it is time to turn Ben Purrington into that player? He doesn't have Clare's drive, but he has SOME ability to move with the ball

Pearce has his qualities but for me he is definitely third choice and would expect him to move on in the summer.

I think it’s pretty obvious to me that it’s Inniss and Lavelle competing for that position long term. If Inniss is able to stay fit, Lavelle has no chance of getting in the side. Unfortunately history tells us it’ll only be half a dozen games until he’s called upon.

And once Lavelle is settled in the side, I expect it’ll be difficult for Inniss to force his way back in.

Those are the kind of players you want in your squad as a manager.

It would be interesting to see Purrington in that role. If Famewo was out I’d pick him there over Pearce or a right footer.

We have played him there at both Shrewsbury and Plymouth.  Did not work at all against Shrewsbury (did not go to Plymouth)

I woulld have thought it depends on who plays in front of him?

Purrington first of all though is a defender by trade. Okay, he's a fullback rather than a CB, but he can defend.
In our back 3 though, we already have more a fullback type at RCB (Clare) but usually still play 2 conventional CBs to dominate in the air.

I wouldn't want to play Clare and Purrington  either side as part of a back 3, (as 2 more fullback type CBs) and only 1 specialist conventional CB. That would weaken our defensive aerial strength.

Had to look the games up to remember but I’m not surprised, Souare played LWB. Put CBT there (or Castillo?) and we’ll be completely different down that side. Souare was supposed to be better going forward but he doesn’t offer the pace needed or get in the box like Purrington does.

What have you been drinking today, Leuthy?
  • I'm with Leuth (yes really) I'd like to see Purrington used as a wide(?) CB option on the left side.

I mean, if Gunter and Matthews can look handy in that role on the right side then Purrington should be getting an England call up if deployed on the left of a back 3.

With no pace and no passing ability ? Hmm.
