MATCH THREAD: Charlton v Accrington | Fri 8 Jan 2021

edited January 2021 in General Charlton
Tonight we welcome Accrington Stanley to The Valley, only the 3rd time we've ever played them in the League.
The previous time they may well have been nicknamed Acrimonious Stanley, as the game descended into anarchy, players sent off and stamped on, crowned with a 94th penalty winner!

Lee Bowyer says: “There’s a good atmosphere around the place. The players are happy, we’re sixth and in amongst it. We need to not panic, do the right things and we’ll get it right.”

Let's hope, that tonight, Lee himself get's it right with team selection and set up. We're still missing the usual injury suspects ..... Alfie Spanner, Inniss,, Famewo and Shinnie. Add to that Ben Watson. Plus, Pratley has managed to get himself suspended for tonight. And Man Utd has recalled Dylan Levitt, hours before he quite possibly would have played tonight!

Two new recruits this week, young Canadian international Liam Millar, on loan from Liverpool.
And ....... drum roll, Rocket Ronnie Schwarz from Midtjylland, leading goalscorer in the Danish SupaLiga last season. Have we finally found a goalgrabber to convert the chances everybody else misses?

Charlton: Amos, Gunter, Pearce, Oshilaja, Maatsen; Forster Caskey, Morgan, Gilbey; Millar, Smyth, Washington.

Subs: Mayard-Brewer, Matthews, Purrington, Williams, Maddison, Schwartz, Aneke.

Tonight's game has been selected for broadcast by Sky Sports, so only season-ticket holders and those in countries where there isn’t an EFL broadcast deal in place will be able to access the game on Valley Pass. Click here for more information

  • tonight is the night we get our Charlton back.
  • Seems @Sage was right Dazzler me old mukka!!
  • Gilbey obviously isn't suspended!
  • Certainly going for pace with Miller and Smyth

    Guess its back to 4-3-3?

  • Schwartz on the bench , a defence of players in their correct positions and a pacey attack... looks good!

No idea what Maddison has to do in order to get a look in however!

    Bogle completely missing!

  • Lee keen to try the Aneke/Schwartz combo second half.

Am very surprised that Maddison isnt starting... Thought with him not playing at all against Hull that he'd be a shoe in for tonight

Unless he's putting in lack of effort in training which we know doesnt impress Bowyer
  • Disappointed about Maddison remaining benched but I guess he can compare tats with Schwartz, I’ve just thrown a tenner at NowTV though so apologies for the loss

“We’ve brought Omar out, that physical presence up top. They play three at the back so it’s a different game. We’ll have to be brave in possession to get Liam on the ball with his pace and directness. He’ll bring us something different that we’ve lost since Alfie (Doughty) has been out injured.”

  • Least players are in their correct positions. That’s a start.

    Maddison gotta be gutted tho.

You haven't seen how they line up yet!

I am glad Bogle isn't even on the bench it's 3 or 4 games to late for all concerned.
  • Everyone hopefully in their correct positions and some very good options off the bench, what can possibly go wrong
  • How any of those players who are not defenders or the goal keeper can justify being in the team ahead of Maddison is beyond me.

    Its maddening.
I think it's all part of the deal with Sky to broadcast the fixture.

By starting him on the pine we're ensuring the 38 people who are watching the match on Sky Sports Shite stay with the channel well into the second half instead of reaching for the sharp sticks to poke out their eyes in the first ten minutes.

  • Seriously what does MM need to do to start a game
  • Much more balanced team. No long ball option though. Have to knocked it about
  • Suddenly pace in the side and Maatsen and Millar playing together is exciting. Pleased with that side.

So the plan tonight will surely be to use the pace of Smyth and Miller to exploit any space behind ther Wing-Backs

Then when Accrington have the ball, those two can drop back into a five man midfield which'll match up with Accrington playing 3-5-2

Whilst he hasn’t been effective, you have to feel for the fella!

He’s been chucked into a team all out of position, with no real service or attacking threat- and expected to do well!
  • If that’s 4-3-3 then I’m very happy. The back line looks decent and the three makes sense with a holder, a playmaker and a box to box player. JFC will have to shield more than he usually does and that’s likely why Bowyer has left out Maddison, as Albie and Gilbey will offer more running than Maddison naturally would. Two pacy wingers as well, though we need to make sure we don’t ask too much of Washington as a lone striker. Having Chuks, Maddison and Williams able to come on if we need more impetus is a good position to be in and Schwartz can come on if we’re either desperate for a goal or coasting. I’ll feel slightly less positive if it’s a 4-4-2 and Millar is playing flatter out wide but still, decent line up
