I wonder if DBD, when his current contract runs out, will be offered at white ball contract similar to Alex Blake's. DBD hasn't scored runs in the County Championship for a good few years and is clearly better suited to the "stand and deliver" type of game required in the shorter form of the game
DBD probably would still want to play both forms, but yes he does seem more of a white ball player
I'm surprised both DBD and Blake are yet to get themselves a spot in a foreign T20 franchise. For Blake, a county white ball only contract doesn't seem much of an income by itself

would the KCCC powers that be demote the vice-captain, especially as Billings will be away a lot on international duty ? .. his 1 day record is a lot better than his 1st class
another comment on Darren Stevens. I recall way back at the start of his Leicester career before he fully developed his bowling ability, he was referred to as 'the right handed Gower' so smooth and beautiful was his batting style .. he has undergone a complete metamorphosis over the past 20+ years, especially after his move to Kent

I think you pick your strongest team first and then your captain and vice - unless you have the mind of Brearley that is. I believe that Billings will become more and more available to the county simply because of the number of better one day players coming through - his ODI and T20 averages of 31 and 17 respectably are nothing to write home about. Denly will be available too.
DBD's dismissal today was typical of how he gets out in red ball - a total lack of decision making whereas in white ball the decision of "see ball hit ball" is a far easier one to make - clear the left leg and away you go!
I don't think his contract is up this season so he has next year to improve his red ball stats but, even assuming we release Kuhn and Crawley is unavailable, there will still be the likes of Denly, Billings, Leaning, Cox, Robinson, O'Riordan and possibly one more signing pushing for places - we've already released Rouse and Dickson and I think a couple of the bowlers will go too so there is scope to bring at least one body in especially if red and white ball contracts become more prevalent. There is absolutely nothing to stop a white ball player being paid on a "per match" red ball basis should circumstances so dictate.

I was unaware but, by all accounts at the AGM, it was announced that both Haggett and Thomas have been released. Very sad, especially for Thomas given that he is the last of our homegrown fast bowlers in the squad.
That leaves us with a squad of just 19 including Kuhn who would have to be one of our two overseas next year if he is retained and of course Crawley, Denly and Billings.
Quite what cricket will look like anyway next season is open to debate!

Sad news, but not surprising, especially with the signing of Gilchrist whose arrival rather came from nowhere and Groenewald having a contract for next season
You assume Crawley will move to a full central contract next season, but whether Denly retains his white ball one is doubtful.

I think you're right about Denly and Billings did little last night to improve his chances of staying in the England squad. Gilchrist and Groenewald will join Milnes, Podmore, Stevens, Stewart and Klassen in what is a strong group of seamers.
It it amazing that we have produced so many keeper batsmen (Seb is playing for the Kent Academy against Middlesex on Sunday and has the gloves for the day - which is fortunate for him because he is one of four in the side!) but struggle to find fast bowlers. There has been a definite shift in age group cricket in recent years from strictly line and length bowlers to including some who have raw pace but not yet the control. These individuals are then subject to specific fast bowling sessions with specialist coaches (during non covid times anyway). Hopefully this will result in some homegrown quickies in years to come.

Kent have never been a prolific producer of fast bowlers, all that hard work and physical pain is something we leave to common northerners
Classy batsmen and dazzling keepers are more our speciality

53 to win off 125 overs!
O'Riordan 34
Crawley 83
176-3 Crawley and Leaning out
Only 5 to win though
Sadly Essex won the group and we won't progress

Sussex do have a quality bowling line up though. Mills, Jordan and Robinson, with Briggs the spinner
