This is a different game to the one Banton has had to recently play opening in the Big Bash and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to rotating and occupying the crease for a good number of overs.
I absolutely hate those appeals where the bowler runs down the track and literally tells the Umpire "that's out". I don't care how out it is (Umpire's Call in this instance) it's the bowler's job to appeal and not give the batsman out.
South Africa: De Kock, R Hendricks, Bavuma, Van der Dussen, JJ Smuts, Miller, Phehlukwayo, B Hendricks, Ngidi, Sipamla, Shamsi.
England: Roy, Bairstow, Root, Morgan, Denly, Banton, S Curran, Woakes, T Curran, Jordan, Parkinson.
Parkinson and Banton make their debuts
the England team is certainly not the strongest .. we will see
Still a decent batting side in particular. Batting first I think a good score will be too much for them.
be good to see Banton, an absolute monster at county level
Is he a number 6 though? I get the Roy/Bairstow partnership is outstanding but if you are going to play Banton I would have thought swapping Bairstow/Banton would have been the wiser move.

I hope one day the umpire has the balls to say "well, that would have been out, but you ran down the danger zone, so... NO BALL!"

It's a difficult call. On the one hand, a player should be picked to play in the position he normally plays in, so Banton should open. On the other hand, Bairstow and Roy is the current world cup winning partnership and there's something to be said for letting Banton settle in down the order before promoting him.

As mush as as I don't believe that Bairstow should be anywhere near red ball now I think it would be extremely harsh to demote him.
Banton will no doubt in the not too distant future open but, in the meantime, I would use Banton at 3 when we have either lost a wicket in the power play or if we have a start of say 100-0 of 15 overs to keep that momentum going. Otherwise, Root stays at 3 followed by Morgan with Banton and Buttler utilised in the last 10-15 overs to best effect.
The problem is England have about 12 players I would quite happily see open or top 3 and struggle for players to bat 5/6/7. This is even worse in T20 where they want Buttler up the order to.
For me this is largely because in domestic cricket if you have a batsman who is likely to be international class in white ball you open with him, no point having him come in at 6 or 7 with no time to impact the game. But this essentially means all the international class batsmen we have in limited overs are top order players. The only real specialist finisher in the county game is Ravi Bopara (who doesn't actually want to do that role) and whilst I am a massive fan of Ravi I think his time has gone.

I agree. Although this is the start of the World Cup cycle and I think it's clear that winning isn't everything right now. Of course they want to win but they want to have a look at players, that's obvuious by the team selection.
On that basis, I find it slightly odd that they played Banton at 6. Personally I don't agree with the settling down the order before promoting him opinion. I get it with Pope in tests, but it's different in limited overs.
Overall slightly harsh that Banton is going to be tested in a very unfamiliar position.

I agree, but it wouldn't be demoting him per se. Banton is here to get some experience and we get to look at an exciting prospect, surely makes more sense to do that in his preferred position.

I don't disagree with that but, for this first ODI and the fact that Bairstow has done nothing wrong in white ball cricket and his confidence has probably been hit enough having lost the gloves and his place in Test cricket. Roy and Bairstow also have that understanding.
I suspect, however, that we might well see Banton given a go at opening during this series and we might even see a situation where the three of them actually open twice.
To me Denly doesn't get in our first choice ODI 11, certainly not if they want to play the attacking cricket of the last few years, but would be the perfect cover for Root, the person to play the accumulative innings in the middle order, as he's doing here.

Fair points. Certainly hope so, seems exciting and could be hitting his prime by the time the next World Cup comes along.
There are clearly two Denlys - the stodgy can't rotate or hit the ball of the square Test player and the expansive clear the front foot white ball batsman!
I absolutely hate those appeals where the bowler runs down the track and literally tells the Umpire "that's out". I don't care how out it is (Umpire's Call in this instance) it's the bowler's job to appeal and not give the batsman out.
Thinking back to this, I wonder how many times an Umpire might be influenced by this "well that's absolutely plumb" type of appeal? It was only Umpire's Call after all and what if the Umpire was thinking he wasn't certain and would have given the benefit of the doubt to the batsman but for this assumptive and vociferous appeal?

I’d say denly’s a better one day bowler than root. But obvs in terms of ability the two have no contest. But i still think denly is underrated

As I thought he was perfect for conditions like today, but you wouldn't want him in the batting lineup if it was a flat pitch 350-400 type track.
A useful spin option too. England clearly like Denly as he has a white ball central contract

I think it's clear he's under explicit instructions in the test team to just occupy the crease.

Absolutely but in taking that attitude to extremes and not rotating the strike he invariably ends up getting himself out for 20-30 trying to go from 1st to 5th gear in one hit. And that won't be enough to keep him in the side.

Couple of wickets now and it could still be interesting
