I'd like to know what the actual change was.

I wonder if Bow wanted a couple of years with a fully paid up contract if new owners want to get rid of him (At the Duchatelet offered rate)
Having ploughed through 10 pages of this thread, I can't see anyone has mentioned this yet:

The Times article clearly states: "...... an amended one-year rolling contract".

Rolling contract. There's the reason for compromise.

It's the perfect solution. Bowyer at all times during his employment at the club, is always guaranteed a year's salary to come.
And Roland limits his financial liability to Bowyer's contract to 12 months rolling at any time.

I thought they’d reach agreement. Bowyer clearly loves it at Charlton, and changing clubs right now would have been a risk. After the final I’m sure he was already thinking about next season.
Derby County this year, Chelsea next, retire on the payoff and buy a carp lake the year after. What risk?

what it tells me is that a lot of you need to take a chill pill & not react to everything that put out there. Golfie Jnr was annoyed last night & I kept telling him to just wait & see. LB wasn't going to just jack it in & he certainly wasn't going to Derby. I also don't think the contract negotiations had much to do with any takeover as I think that's a long way off (Dalmat wont be buying us) - just RD not wanting to pay anymore than he really needed or wanted too.

already with Bowyer signed up and talking to Talksport and Sky, I feel excited about next season. This is what Lee does he unites the players, Fnas and Staff on this Journey.

Yes i know with our budget it will be tough but with Lee and us all together I do feel excited we could shock a few and the unit will be be better the sum of its parts type of thing.

Ignore Roland and get behind Lee the team and lets enjoy OUR Charlton for another season.

    Pleased that Bowyer is staying.

I hope he REALLY IS satisfied with his reward and that the bullying tactics haven't prevailed.

Come on, it was a statement by the owner on the official site, obviously people were going to react. Maybe the reactions had a part to play in his U-turn.

For those of who can remember Brian Rix, he could not have written a better farce than this one.

Roland needs to seek some medical help.

Apologies for my rants at you last night but it had been a stressful day after a stressful 5 years ! Still not sure if you are ITK or have a crystal ball but whatever !

    It's a 10 from me and MOM.
I've never claimed to be anything, just passing on what I hear. Apology accepted, I didn't see what you posted btw :)
The most impressive thing about Red Henry's tweet last night that" better news in the morning" was he knew before Jackson, Marshall and Gallen.  Checking the time line, he gave that info while Lee Bowyer was still on his phone to the Helmet.

I hope you know bugging phones is an offence RH.

    Well done again.

    Agree.

It's Roland who has done the U turn.

The evidence is on the OS.

I have had to come on here and recheck threads. Was yesterday a nightmare or was some prick testing my patients...they won by the way if they were.
How can something get so bad, release a statement on the official site, be all over the national press and by 8am this morning everyone at the club is having a love in.
I can only put it down to two things. Either Roland is a bipolar and forget his medication yesterday leading to a bad day, or he has a twin.

As 'a bipolar' I can assure you Roland isn't. FFS.

Agreed @Arsenetatters no way does Roland endure bipolar or manic depression as I still prefer to call it, as bipolar makes it sound like your an explorer !
Having endured the highs and terrible lows of MD before it was fashionable, only well being gave me the tools to deal with it.

Roland Duchatelet could well be on the autistic scale though as he can't communicate, has no social skills, and is obsessed with his view of the world while seemingly unaware of the consequences of his actions. Many rich people have this trait so it's not a handicap but it's a mega problem when you are the owner of a football club and need to empathize with a myriad of different people including staff and fans.

So pleased that Lee Bowyer is staying, even if many things could still change while RD is the owner.

Thanks @soapboxsam. I also prefer the term manic depression. It explains it a little better. Im also delighted (in a very stable, medicated way!) that Bowyer is staying :)

I wouldn't normally wipe my arse on the Daily Mail, let alone click the link ...... but the Bowyer situation is the exception right now.

Throws some light on events, quoting Bowyer:

He had a heart to heart with David from Brighton.  ;)
Not quite......it was “Dave” from Brighton.

From above so no-one else has to click the link and give the Daily Mail more ad revenue

    • Lee Bowyer signed a contract extension at the Championship club on Tuesday
    • His future was put into doubt by a bizarre statement by the owner a day earlier
    • Roland Duchatelet revealed process behind trying to tie boss down to new deal
Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet has hit out at Lee Bowyer's agent again - even after the u-turn to sign a new deal at the Championship club.

Bowyer signed a contract extension on Tuesday after his future was plunged into doubt when the controversial owner had announced he had failed to agree terms with the 42-year-old a day earlier.

Duchatelet released a bizarre statement on Monday evening in which he criticised Bowyer's agent and then in revealing the process behind trying to tie Bowyer down to a new deal, he labelled the manager's rep 'the problem'.

'The problem was his agent [Rob Segal] was proposing things which would have increased the liability of the club to such an extent that it would have been difficult to sell,' he said in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT on Tuesday.

'Well, increased the difficulty, because it's difficult already.

‘So we found an agreement, which is in fact a very nice agreement for him, which is good, but it's also an agreement whereby we do not get into a big liability for the future, which is also very important for us and our ability to sell the club.

'If you're the owner of the club you have different objectives at the same time. In my position I had the objective of keeping Lee and to maintain the ability to sell the club.

'I wanted to combine both. Now I have a solution where I can keep Bowyer, one of the better managers in the Championship, and keep the ability to sell the club.'

Bowyer has exceeded expectations at Charlton, working amid difficult circumstances and huge uncertainty off the field since his appointment, initially as caretaker in March 2018.

Sportsmail understands the salary offered was in line with a bottom half of League One manager and the lowest in the Championship by far while he was also going to have to operate with the league's lowest budget next season.

On the dramatic 24 hours at The Valley Bowyer, who guided Charlton to the Championship last campaign, told Sky Sports News: 'I was not really aware of it [the statement]. I'm out in France at one of my lakes.

'It was only when I spoke to my wife and she said "apparently you're gone". I literally spoke to the owner just before I spoke to my wife and had a normal conversation with him.

'It was civil and we were negotiating. It was only when I came off the phone I heard a statement had gone out.

'He then called in the evening and said "Look Lee I would like to agree with what we spoke about earlier so let's move things forward and start planning" which was great to hear because all I wanted to do was stay at the club, I love the club. I think everybody knows that so to hear that was great.'

Duchatelet, who is unpopular among Addicks fans, also disclosed that he is edging closer to selling the Championship club.

'That's what I really want. Today we have a kind of arrangement so we can move forward. It is unclear (when it will happen) but it is certainly not days.

'It's true because we came back to the Championship, the interest has now improved again.

'I tried to combine both objectives - to keep Bowyer and to keep also the attractiveness for the club to be sold. The sooner the better if you ask me.'

I think Mrs D gave Roland an earful last night when he got home as they sat eating their dinner.
It can be the only reason why that idiot came to his senses.
Apparently she said it while they washed and dried the dishes. (Football club owners spend too much on dishwashers)
