There you have it- good find. In a future edition of Getting to Know the Network (or similar) Karl Robinson will come clean and tell us he went to Belgium with his A-team hoping to impress upon Duchatelet that he needed a modest amount of a cash to get the squad into promotion race shape but was sent back with a firm message that Katy has books to balance. It was obvious two weeks ago when he started lamenting the prices other clubs want for their players and mentioning marquee signing that he didn't have enough at his disposal to bring in the sort of players he went to Belgium begging for. It's so bloody obvious - look at the facts of what keeps happening with Duchatelet. It's Year 3 and we are firmly mid-table Division 3 with a squad of journeymen, kids and loanees. That's a mix for holding your own and developing players for sale at best - pretty much what we've been told by the Belgians ever since they arrived. "Competitive in the Championship with ambitions for the Premier League" = hanging on and maybe spending a little if the squad can throw a double-six and get into the top ten by January. We went down folks and we have managed to be competitive again this year whilst recouping £13-16m from selling our best players. The apologists and uber optimists are dreaming and time will prove them wrong. In the meantime we continue to shrivel as a football club. We are turning into an unambitious Leyton Orient with a permanently small fan-base. It's criminal.
Perhaps he's listened to the getting to know the network pt 3 and is referring to the way Morrison, parsnip Pete and hamer were treated when questioning some clubs conduct.
In the cold light of day when the window opened our main goal threats were magennis, Lookman and (albeit a struggling) ajose. It shuts with it being Tony watt (1 in 16), lee Novak and a kid who has yet to make an appearance in senior football. I just hope magennis is back soon but with our medical teams track record I won't hold my breath. Meanwhile, down the road, them lot keep Morison, Gregory and obrien.
More PR bollocks to cover up the failure to strengthen the squad.
It would carry more weight if Duchatelet had shown, at any point over the last three years, that he is willing to pay the going rate for quality players at our level
I don't think it's crying wolf. I think it's his management style. He likes to create a siege mentality - 'they're all against us lads, let's show em'.
It's a ploy that's worked for Dyche and Holloway amongst others. I'm not convinced that is what he is doing here though. He is just trying to "manage" the disappointment of not getting what he wanted
Maybe it's just me but I really liked that interview. I think he's honest and I'm not sure why propel don't like him.
I don't dislike the fella, but I just can't get over that when you sell a player for a few million, that other clubs will put the price up for players that we want.
Does he not get that?
Oh he gets that. It's just that Charlton were being quoted more than other clubs for the same player. I can see why that might piss of Robinson.
How would he know this?????
I would imagine the players agent has told him what other clubs have been quoted hence when we get giving a price it is higher.
We've got some potentially good players in but we've sold some known quality players. Bird in the hand or two in the bush?
"Be positive, back the team, we've good a good manager now, things have changed, good transfer window"
This is what people were saying when we signed Ajose and Novak 6 months ago. How'd that work out?
Let's see how the new players do, how the kids step up, how quickly injured players return, how long Watt is on his game.
All to play for so no more see how "it's all over" than "everything is great". I've said all along we will make the playoffs and I stick by that.
But just step back and think when people say " we can make the playoffs"
We are talking about CHARLTON ATHLETIC MAYBE reaching the LEAGUE ONE playoffs and that's if all the new signings work, the kids aren't too inconsistent the way kids often are, we have better luck with injuries, avoid more suspensions etc etc. Other promotion chasing teams have also tried to strengthen their squads.
But what remains is we are talking about, hoping for, asking can we, maybe get to the third tier play -off lottery, perhaps?
That's far we've sunk that that isn't expected, just hoped for. The third division play-offs is our "only desire"
And next summer we'll get rid of Johnson but we'll have added some more expensive drains on the budget- Ajose, Novak?, who else? - to add to those like Sarr and Cebellos and Igor (who'd I'd try to bring back) we've already got. The loanees go back or we have to get them on contracts. Would love to keep Rudd but can only see that if we go up.
So the merry go round starts again, another re-building job, another new era, even more mistakes to be learnt from regardless of which division we are in.
KR in post transfer window, angry reaction at the way his latest club have been treated shocker. He's had a knock back and he's trying to be the diplomat by clearing his patch, keeping the fans on board whilst obviously not wanting to openly criticise his paymaster. Plenty of sound bites but I'm not convinced about the sincerity of it all. So it's a backs to the wall philosophy now, we all unite and go with what we have.
Yet there's a message from him to Latrine to get working on the summer recruits. Are they for the Campionship then or the rebuild for L1 when at least half a dozen maybe ten loanees and unwanted players exit, go figure. Same old same, same old beckons, better keep that revolving door well oiled!
Good luck Karl because the home form is now crucial. Notwithstanding last weeks superb smash and grab victory if we don't capitalise on it, I can see the natives getting very restless again because you're walking a very thin tightrope.
I don't think it's crying wolf. I think it's his management style. He likes to create a siege mentality - 'they're all against us lads, let's show em'. Whether you think that's a modern management technique or a bit Ron Atkinson is open to debate, but I don't think there's anything devious or underhand in it. He definitely gives a shit and that'll do for me. As others have said, it's about results now.
If it's not true then it is devious and underhand.
So either you believe that by pure coincidence that some nasty people did the dirty on him at MK Dons and now some other nasty people (maybe from MK Dons) did the dirty on him now OR he's making it up to create a siege mentality?
More PR bollocks to cover up the failure to strengthen the squad.
It would carry more weight if Duchatelet had shown, at any point over the last three years, that he is willing to pay the going rate for quality players at our level
I think this is the real issue isn't it? Whether or not what Robinson said is the truth, previous form has shown that this regime NEVER invests fully and we are always left with a squad that is lacking in some way or another. It's the same old story every single window. We hear so much from apologists saying 'the window hasn't closed yet' and 'wait until the end of the month' well once again we've failed to improve our squad sufficiently.
When are people going to learn that this is Roland's way. He is a fool who is haemorrhaging money because he penny pinches in the wrong areas. We've seen what can be achieved when a manager is allowed to build a fit and proper squad with players that he chooses himself. Powell did exactly that and we romped the league, and apparently, he didn't spend a fortune to get there. No manager will be ever be given such an opportunity with Duchatelet running the show.
That MK interview is very revealing, bordering on embarrassing. It even includes the anecdotal reference to meeting 2 random supporters who said thankyou for all the club was doing (was this on a petrol station Karl),
I want Charlton to succeed, I want Karl to succeed, I will be willing them on from the Covered End saturday but please Karl, take a leaf out KMs latest book, if you cant say anything worthwhile say nothing at all.
He didn't mention anything about the club not backing him, quite the opposite is what I heard. He seems quite upbeat, just annoyed that another club has stiffed him. Decent window with Page and JFC coming in plus the loans look ok, Byrne and the Arsenal lad are the stand outs. Looking forward to Saturday
A voice of reason amongst the doom, gloom and negativity!
Lookman was always going to leave, just a matter of when. Fox has been hounded out by the club's so called fans and Ajose has been a complete failure and is living off of one good season at Swindon, he's been shite everywhere else!
From what I've read, if Norwich had managed to sign a striker yesterday Kyle Lafferty was on his way to us, but in the end we had to settle for a rising star from Arsenal. We all know why KR was angry when not being able to sign Reeves. Let's hope we pick up Reeves and Rudd for nothing at the end of the season as they are both now out of contract.
Without a doubt the squad is good enough to make the play offs, 5 games unbeaten, hopefully 6 after Saturday, COYR!
As much as I appreciate that it must be frustrating for clubs to raise the price when Charlton, with a very rich owner and a CEO that has a reputation for being easy to fleece and £12m just received in transfers, come knocking that is just the way of the world.
If Lookman had been determined to move to QPR and there were no other interested parties we wouldn't have even asked for £10m.
There is also the logic (assuming we are talking about Reeves) that if signing him increased our chances of getting promoted and benefiting from more income then he has a value. It is also possible that MK Dons think his presence might benefit their season.
Either way KR makes himself look like a spoiled child "They wouldn't let me have their player", and, especially in light of the MK Dons video, it makes me wonder if the problem is his not all the other clubs!
The price is the price - pay it or shop somewhere else!
we will always fail to perform in every aspect, kr is no different, granted hes had a good start but talks rubbish and some fans believe that them upstairs have changed. no they havent its simple fail, repeat, lie, fail, repeat, lie
A similar thing allegedly happened whilst at MK Dons when Robinson did want Kyle McFadzlen to go to Sheffield United (a league rival at the time) The deal did not go through and both parties moved on.
Unless this other unnamed club has broken the rules, then move on and concentrate on the rest of the season.
Ps. Great find @Floebot if it was you that stumbled on this
I had a look through a Milton Keynes forum. I went back and found a few responses to Karl's heartfelt video from August:
"What a joke, what an absolute bloody joke. All this crap about we won't be rushed, we have loads of time, we have a big budget. So we just have Maynard the goal machine, please FFS don't tell me we have Tshimsnga or BTS, they are kids that are not ready for this. Built up by Robbo, and knocked down yet again. Same old story, same old sh*t. I haven't heard the Robbo interview, but it will be the same as before....blah, blah, f***ing blah."
"Agree 100%. I'm not a season ticket holder, but I'd feel like I'd been pulled in by false advertising and would want a refund. All of the rhetoric from KR, waiting for the right players, holding out etc, having targets and then have backup targets (or however KR put it) has resulted in precisely f**k all. KR is a fraud, I've only just opened my eyes to it."
"Something must be seriously wrong with how we spend our money Over the years we had had millions from player sales yet I don't see it going on new players, only freebies & loanees. Our business model doesn't match other clubs who are even smaller than ours. Even this transfer window we say we spend a record amount on 1 player BUT that money came from selling other players. So yet again, another window goes with a net spend of £0.00 Fans being short changed & lets not forget 2 seasons ago ticket prices were £20, went up to £25 in Championship & back to £22 now. Nice 10% increase in 2 seasons Gates dropping back to average below 10k & the stadium will seem eerie again only 1/3 full.
Robbo has had 6 months to target & sort new team out since knowing we'd be relegated. Left with 1 recognised striker and 1 winger. Don't even go there with Powell ! Cant see 60+ goals in this team but can see us leaking goals as we have done so far in pre-season and start of season. Plays offs a dream, just prey we don't get dragged down into relegation battle and stay mid table.
A change in management & tactics is required if not in top 8. Dele money well spent !!!"
"Please can we give this a rest. Most of that money is going on the training facility. The facility is essential for the future and long term success of the club and is the RIGHT THING to spend the money on. It will cost MILLIONS, probably even more than we got for Dele."
"And when do you envisage the training facility will be ready to utilise???"
"No idea, presumably within the next 5 years, maybe 10 if there are more major issues encountered. It's fairly irrelevant to the point."
"All well and good having Plush Facilities, if you play in the Conference..."
Seems Roland did his research when appointing Robinson.

This a million times over. Do it on the effing pitch, and shut up about everything. I for one have had 'poxy communication overload' from these clowns. Promotion for me is not a hope but a demand.

And be equally criticised (if not more so) for keeping schtum, lack of communication blah blah blah, he can't win in this situation. I think he is very media savvy and is clearly playing the game and trying to appease his boss and the fans. I for one will only criticise him for results, he can talk as much shite as he likes if by 2pm 30th April we are in 6th place.

Say it again, he can be a Trappist monk or have tourettes if we win games consistently but to trot out the same excuse in two different windows for two different clubs is a tad embarrassing.

Hence the media savvy comment and appeasement, he played the same game in both interviews

Great.
I'm delighted.
He got fired from his last job with the side languishing just outside the bottom three.
He's passionate, granted.
But nobody, I repeat NOBODY can succeed properly with the ownership we have currently.
Who thinks it was more like the £400k rumoured?
We've got some potentially good players in but we've sold some known quality players. Bird in the hand or two in the bush?
