Bangkok behave! Joe McLaughlin? Despite the level he played he was one of the worst CHs to pull on the shirt. On a level with Paddy McCarthorse. Would seriously rate Faye and Goldthorpe higher.
Whoever suggested Matt Holland must have been the kitman. Barbe I don't think ever played for 1st team but was decent.
Spot on RE Joe McLaughlin. Apart from his first couple of games, he was absolutely awful.
Keith Jones and Carl Leaburn. I also think other clubs underestimatd Richard Rufus. Great for Charlton but surprised me nobody else snapped him up. I remember Carl not being the quickest player and he was expected to run back for corners, then criticised for not chasing the ball, when it was lumped up field!

I'd agree he was not the quickest off the mark but once into that long stride he could shift faster than most.
Never liked him much as a player but he was neat and tidy and scored some important goals. He was a good player. Did a job.
The 4-3 comeback at Newcastle in the early 90s was even underrated by pardew himself. When manager there after they'd drawn 4-4 ... he said it was the greatest comeback seen at St James. ... Oh nay.
Mark Stuart. Got the usual criticism for wingers, like no end product, doesn't track back, but was actually quite effective and played at a high level while only young.

Good shout.
I think he had a goals to games ratio for us of close on 1:3 which is good for a winger.
As a visible legacy the Advent Calendar from St Andrews shows how instrumental he was in Shirtliff's first goal. Something it is easy to forget.
Mark Bowen has been said so many times I'm starting to think he was overrated
Yeah, he was maybe a bit unsung, but I don't really remember anyone saying he was anything but a very good player for us in his relatively brief time with us.
A lot of shouts for Paul Hayes, have to confess I only saw him maybe 2-3 times but thought he looked like a thoroughly average goal poacher who wasn't particularly good at football.
For those who had Jerome Thomas, I'd go with him being the most overrated and most underrated player for us. Great at times, woeful at others.
I'll add Rob Elliot, who I always thought looked class for us. Also, Parish Newsletter, though he was rated pretty highly by some.

Hayes wasn't a poacher. More of a link up striker. Formed a good partnership with BWP straight away, something that doesn't happen too often. He'd drop deep and pick out passes.
Managed to find statbank from that season, he only scored 3 but also got 5 assists (12 starts, 7 sub apps). Wasn't a Championship standard but he played a part that season, especially the first few months.
I don't think Simon Francis was underrated - I think he was genuinely shit for us!
Scott Wagstaff and Paul Hayes are good shouts.
i don't think wagstaff was underrated . He was recognised as a good honest trier , with minimal ability ; nobody ever gave him much grief, despite limitations

Alan Pardew.
