Karlan Ahearne-Grant ... New Contract

  • I think he is a better player than Hanlan or Umerah but they are more physically suited to this side at this moment in time. Much of the time KAG played for us he was wide which I thought was wrong at the time. However that might be a decent part of his education given that Holmes won't last a few months given the amount of lumps being kicked out of him.
  • Although I hope that I am wrong I don't think he will ever make it.

I can honestly say that I have seen him play a fair few times now and never once I have ever been impressed.

In contrast when Hanlon came on Saturday, I thought that he had something about him and in my opinion in a short space of time he showed potential.

    Hark at Arsene Wenger.

Writing off an 18 year old kid who's trying to earn a pound note at our car crash of a club.

Edit: Did I say car crash? Make that multiple pile up.

Not too sure if he has shown enough natural quality to get three years if I'm honest. Felt the same about Joe Pigott and he ended up doing practically zero for us in the end.

I would have given him an extra year, maybe two to see if he could break into the side at League One level.

But I think that has to do more with protecting the player's value. he won't be on much. If he comes good, great, if not he has the natural athleticism that means a club lower down will almost certainly take a punt on him.
I don't want it to seem that I have it in for KAG, but having seen him play quite a few times I can't say I've seen much of the 'natural athleticism' either. Not particularly quick, lacks physical strength, struggles to keep up with the pace of the game and doesn't have much 'intensity' in his efforts.

Some of these things may come in time, but so far I can't really put a finger on an identifiable 'strength' that he brings to us.
  • He's 18 still. He will still be developing physically and technically.

He may make it or he may not but let's give him a chance.
  • What figure is his release clause set at?

Developing physically!! In that case, I wouldn't want to upset him or konza in a few years, they aren't exactly skinny little teenagers now
  • Despite massive mistakes in many areas the regime have got a number of things right when it comes to releasing young players who are not up to it or failing to renew their contracts. Absolutely the right thing to do to get shot of Piggott, Munns and Muldoon ( when that happens) on the basis of what I have seen of him and our desperate need to reinforce the midfield and clear out deadwood to be able to do so .Right however to give KAG another chance given his age ,promise and the fact that he has been done no favours in the last two years . He desperately needs a loan to a league 2 or conference club .
  • Does anyone else remember that twat on twitter some account last season? Was called 'has KAG scored yet?' Or something like that regularly just tweeted the word No, even after that Fulham game where he played well and put in a great cross for cousins to nod home the equaliser on sky sports. Spent the whole time abusing a kid.

If you think a young player who is on social media won't be aware of this sort of twatty behaviour and it won't have an impact on him then you are very wrong.

Didn't deserve any of the abuse he got.

Think he will be a very good player.

Nothing against him. But he needs to move on, Im yet to see anything from him at all at Charlton.

Maybe sign Best, and loan KAG out to a lower league side.

  • Karlan was instrumental in our second goal today with the pressure he put on the MK Dons defender.

    There's a player in there.

I thought it was just a massive balls up from there centre half

He knows where the goal is as has done it for the U23s - Needs to get his mentality right as the goals are no different in terms of size, its just the opposition that are better but so are his team mates

Why did he balls it up?

    Answer: Karlan

Centre-Back will have been aware of KAG yet with his back to him wouldnt have quite known where he was

Had he left the ball then KAG could quite easily have got it himself (We know it wasnt the case because of his position) yet Golbourne couldnt have known that so had to do something
  • He remains not good enough imo.

Let him get some regular games out on loan.

    Nah I'm not buying that.
  • Not good enough . It's a joke that he is our only attacking option on the bench . Best must sign before Rochdale. .

No where near the level we require. Worst Charlton squad player imo, non league at best

  • Cows Arse and banjo springs to mind.
  • What worries me is that he's not where near as good as Kim Grant was at 20 years old! Two goals v Millwall at the den! Karlenäs has not hit those highs! I really wish he would just very soon find the net and few times! Come on Karlen you can do it!!

How long ago was that? It's years since he was scoring in youth football, and maybe he was an early developer?
  • As always I don’t like to say it with him being a youth player. But he is *awful* anyone at oxford will tell you about his miss in the last minute, about 18 yards out of that and he would’ve missed if there were 6 goals. Hopefully he’ll forge a career somewhere but he’s nowhere near good enough for us, putting pressure on a defender doesn’t change that.
  • I was very surprised when I saw this thread to see KAG had been offered a new deal. I've seen him a couple of times and not been impressed. Most on here have seen him many times and have come to the same conclusion.

Of course I didn't realise it was a thread from last year.

Last season I think; only Brett Brereton (Nottingham Forest starter) had more goals than him

I’ve heard this for about 2 years now. A lot of young players now think they’ve made it before achieving anything. Contrast Jay Da Silva. Probably minted already but has the desire to demand football, comes to us and you can see he’s a great player and he works hard.

A couple of years ago Joe Pigott was driving a £50k car and had a swagger about him. But he hasn’t achieved anything. Maybe he’s found his level now or maybe he’s consciously gone back to basics but he’s going ok this season at Maidstone.

I think the game is in danger of eating itself with all the money around for mediocrity

I agree with this as well. He seems to really think he is the top man. Needs to go on loan because I'm not sure what he is bringing when he comes on
