I think there is a fair point amongst this thread. A 52-48 vote is not a strong mandate to make a major change. A 52-48 vote in favour of remaining would have required the Government, in my view, to alter the terms of our EU deal. Having 48% of the public, in theory at least, unhappy is not good for a country, organisation, football club or anything else for that matter.

Cameron went for the referendum to appease UKIP as he was too gutless to stand up to them. The leave campaign headed up by two ex-journalists and ex commodity broker are so clueless it's embarrassing - they really don't have a clue what to do next. A lot of those who voted are even more clueless which just adds to the comedy - maybe it's just a bad dream?
they should have, it is their future after all. I think Cameron just assumed victory (as the pathetic Remain campaign bears out) so didn't bother to fight the Leavers over it.
Can I just add that this government brought in the following law for industrial action-:
Even if unions achieve the 50% turnout, they then need 40% of those eligible to vote to back the action. That amounts to an 80% vote in favour of strikes - far higher than that needed to win a general election.
Therefore on a 72% turnout (as per the official count) we should have had in excess of 57.6% to win either way. In other words Leave or Remain would not have won. This is not an In/Out position by me, it is just fact. Why then have we a government who imposes such restrictions on Trade Unions (I'm not a member of any Union), but then ignores them on such a crucial question?

Possibly because they're a bit hypocritical? It always makes me laugh when they claim a mandate based on about a 40% share of the vote where the turnout is barely above 60%. We have a ridiculous electoral system which favours the big parties.

The mandate of a subsequent general election could supersede the referendum, yes, but the likelihood of it actually happening is slim as things stand

I've not denigrated anybody as stupid or racist. I don't need to as the points I make either stand up or fall on their merits when challenged.
My point is that the petition is now going up at the rate of 100,000 per hour and the people are very motivated.
A week is a long time in politics so who knows where we will be in August?!
