People are saying the club will sell , RD wants the cash that's just total bollocks the fact is a club like ours at times have to sell a player to balance the books ... Next season you will be having teams coming down with 90 mill pounds in the their pockets due to new TV and parachute deals how can a club like our compete with that ?? Look at Sky money last week that was Ipswich 11th appearance on TV since they last was on against us , compete that with how many times we have been 2 ?? again we are losing out money wise All this makes it impossible for clubs like Charlton to turn down offers for anyone
Or you grow a pair of bollocks and decide to be more than a mere feeder team for bigger clubs, keep hold of your up and coming stars for as long as possible, get in a good manager who isnt surprised at the quality of the championship to build a team around poyet, gomez, cousins and lookman with proven quality players beyond a completely deflated network and some random data analysis bods.
Penny rich pound stupid the current way. Gutless philosophy to say we have to sell all our youth so cheaply, cheaply in every sense.
Your missing a big point the club were helpless in keeping Poyet and Gomez and it does not matter if Lookman signs a five year deal any club with excessive amount of money to spend and to offer him and his family money beyond their dreams he will go , no matter what Charlton . This is not new we have sold players to survive for years why back to players like Mike Bailey, Paul Walsh , Lee Bowyer so it's not the owners of managers fault when big clubs tempt them away
It is hard to keep players yes.
However it is not hard, given the money swilling around in the premiership, to get a fair price for those players if the will is there and the negotiator is half competent.
Raheem Sterling was sold for £49m Joe Gomez £3.5m, a derisory fee which explains Meire's desperation to suppress it or, to use her preferred phrase, not disclose it.
I accept attacking players are valued more highly than defenders but not £45.5m more!
We were robbed and will be again. To be fair Meire is not alone historically (although that will not interest her of course) arguably Len Glover and Darren Bent are the only full value transfer fees we have received in my 52 years of supporting the Club. Some might say Parker but more than 10 years on he has still not been properly replaced which makes that £10m look cheap.
Nevertheless I cannot recall an example of selling a player at such a marked discount as we did Gomez.

On top of what Len says whilst I agree with your above points it's the white flag "come n get 'em" approach that the club has adopted that is what is off putting. Yes it may be good short term business but it disenfranchises supporters as it's basically saying anyone who shows potential will be sold before turning out for the club and it's fans for any real period.
What's the point of getting excited about a prospect coming through the ranks if they're off at the first window. Pointless supporting a club that's taking the approach of being a feeder club for club's in the top flight with no serious ambition to get their ourselves.
May be exciting and attractive on a balance sheet and p&l but completely turgid for loyal supporters. Of all course clubs outside the big 4 sell their best to keep moving but our strategy sees us likely selling our best prospects whilst probably just standing still.
Turgid and uninspiring. I agree with you that we can't blame the managers at Charlton. ..that's because evidently they have as much input into player retention and recruitment at our club as Daley Thompson does.
I think the only time we stood our ground in my time of supporting us where I think we got the 'right' fee was Bent to Spurs for £16m or whatever it was. Particularly as it was Levy and he is a shrewd operator

didn't we receive a then record transfer fee for a British teenager when we sold lee bowyer?
Meire doesn't mention the fee. Reliable sources have said that the fee wasn't £3.5m.
Unless you prove yourself in the PL you are unlikely to get a large fee, Sterling had proven himself at the top of the PL and was an England international. Attackers always go for more than defenders anyway, John Stones cost Everton £3m, how much is he worth now!
Trouble with the way the club is run is that our owner seems to think bobbing along near the bottom is ok but it means kids that are very good don't hand around too long. Sure with the PL gravy train the best always go but..
- Derby are a Champ team who persuaded Will Hughes to stay - Palace were a Champ team and got Zaha to stay for what 2/3 years before he went - Southampton were L1 / Championship but got Llana to stay
What makes these clubs players more 'sticky'? Genuine question... How do we emulate that? They will of course go in the end but Gomez, Poyet, Shelvey, Palmer, Huddart, Ajayi, Jenks... Less than 100 games between them (prob less than 50!).
Charlton have always had a history of having to sell players to survive, Roland's not really doing anything that's not done before. The only hope is that he put a massive sell on clause like he did for the fella a man city

Soton sold Walcott, Ox-Chamberlain, Bale...
Lallana only became a star once in the PL, and especially under Pochettino. And as soon as he became famous, he was off!

True we did £2.8m in 1996 I temporarily forgot that one.
Makes the £3.5m for Gomez nearly 20 years on look even worse in my view.

The Rob Lee transfer was another piece of bad business . The fee barely covered a 2 Bob property deal.

Bale played 40 games for Southampton first and was sold for £7M 8 years ago so I would say significantly better than any of our lot in value to Soton.
Lallana was very highly thought of when he first broke through and throughout his time at Soton.
Walcott only played 20 odd games but was sold for £12M almost 10 years ago now, again much better value than our recent sales (had never played PL either).
The Ox had 36 League One games for Soton before going to arsenal for £15M 4/5 years ago.
I think all of the above are actually good examples of players where a small club has kept them for a season or so and then maxed out the fee to double digit millions, all before the last few years phenomenal increases in TV revenue.

Rodders if only it were that simple. Right from the takeover RD was not going to put money into Charlton just to keep us afloat and when this finally sinks in with Charlton supporters we will have to be grateful that we have a team to support. Then again if he carries on employing poor managers and does not invest in the first team there may not be to many Charlton supporters left who care. So he knows what is going on at the Valley, supporters slowly drifting away, but off set the lose of revenue from fans against the money made from selling young players and he clearly thinks this is a price worth paying.
How many more times do people need telling. We got £3.5m for Gomez as that was what was put in his contract as a buy out. If we hadn't agreed to that then he would never have signed it and we wouldn't have got a quarter of that.
It doesn't mean that was what his value at the time of sale really was.

That reminds me. I haven't taken my medication today.
