This is precisely our business model now. Whereas Murray and Varney may have dreaded interest, agents turning heads and having to fend off bids the new mob have explicitly stated that turnover of academy products is their way forward and therefore will be positively salivating at the prospect of a club offering a couple of million for our most exciting young prospect since poyet and gomez.
Don't just blame the buying club. It takes 2 to make a sale and we've made it abundantly clear to the world we are in the business of selling potential stars asap rather than investing in a suitable manager and backing him to build a team around such players.
Karel Fraeye said in his press day yesterday a couple of decent things about Lookman. he said that lets make him a good Championship player first before we say he will be a good Premiership player. He also said we ought not to 'burn him'. In yesterdays press day interview Fraeye was back to the chirpy bloke, rather than the battered bloke post Ipswich. Fraeye maintained that we were harshly treated by the magnitude of the Ipswich result, which worried me that he was looking a little bit too hard for excuses, but he admitted the first goal should have been cleared before the foul on Solly. Fraeye continues to talk quite a convincing game, but after a succession of managers we are left, still, with only being able to properly judge them on results. If Fraeye thinks it is because we are under resourced player wise, then he must simply tell Roland that Lookman is not for sale at all. It would do his standing a lot of good if he told Roland and also us that losing Lookman would be another wrong move.
Lots of clubs look at lots of players, all the time. Means nothing. Now if they come in with a tribunal fee at the end of the season, do we spend it on a house DJ or shiny new seats?
It's pretty obvious that there's a lot of potential there. He'll be moved on in April. I hope he has a good career at a proper club.
I agree with that. We're a joke right now. Still I support the team 100% and though i'd be glad to see any of them go, it is what it is. They're better off elsewhere.
I'm not surprised .. he's a star already .. a superstar in the making .. IF .. he can maintain progress and a level head .. it's inevitable that all super talented players will end up at a major club sooner or later
That being said, to infer we are not a proper club is a bit extreme. I don't agree with a lot of things in how we are run currently but we are still a proper club.
Lookman doesn't 'deserve better than us'. We gave him his first chance of pro football, I would imagine he is delighted and very pro Charlton. Hope he stays a couple of years.
Another symptom (if true) of the Premier League having too much money. A few million quid punt for them is absolutely feck all yet clubs just one league below in the championship are financially compelled to accept the bid.
I clearly remember Richard Murray telling us when the RD circus rolled into town that the days when we had to sell our young stars to keep afloat were over. I used to like RD. Now it seems our entire raison d'etre is to fatten up youngsters to sell on for a quick buck, and our CEO is so dimwitted that our players are pointlessly cheap. So we have to call every deal 'undisclosed'. Sounds like we are ashamed of our prices, and after the Gomez sale, it's not a surprise. Thanks Richard.
Don't think we need to worry about Lookman this early. As an attacking player he needs to show he's got goals/assists in him and that won't come without a run of games.

I was having a chat with a few Arsenal fans this week. They were obviously very frustrated with their injury situation and one of them joked that maybe we (Charlton) could loan someone to them. I was like 'absolutely no way!'. I told them our own squad was so thin that we were facing the danger of relegation. I just can't believe a few days later now I see this news. Hope there's nothing more than just 'have a look at the player'. Lookman was the only one in the Ipswich match that left me with a positive impression. Far from perfect I know but I just hope he'll keep on progressing and make bigger contribution at Charlton rather than somewhere else.

It does. Why not try the alrnative route though. Get an experienced manager and support him over three or four seasons in the transfer market giving the club at least a chance of getting its nose into the Premier League trough instead of the current half baked plan.

Or you grow a pair of bollocks and decide to be more than a mere feeder team for bigger clubs, keep hold of your up and coming stars for as long as possible, get in a good manager who isnt surprised at the quality of the championship to build a team around poyet, gomez, cousins and lookman with proven quality players beyond a completely deflated network and some random data analysis bods.
