With RD selling Standard Liege who is scouting players around Europe for us? Can't imagine the other clubs have big scouting networks. Are there scouts that work for RD rather than a specific club?

Another long term staff member leaving but I suspect that he has found it difficult to be a chief scout in recent years.
We all know how it will play out if he does go.
His departure is barely acknowledged, if it is at all, by the club.
His contribution will be rubbished on here.
It will be pointed out on here that there are lots of scouts so what's the big deal? Scouts are 10 a penny.
Anyone daring to be concerned will be derided.
Chapple does an interview for the SLP in a few months expressing his reasons for leaving which will be dismissed as "sour grapes from a bitter ex-employee"
I feel sure that he has felt marginalised under the current regime where the emphasis on recruitment has shifted in the main to mainland Europe rather than Bradford or Swindon. I doubt his expertise runs quite as far as knowing every player in Holland, Belgium or France.
Probably makes sense for him to move to where his skills are necessary and valued ?
Good luck Phil.
We don't know who was recommended by Chapple and then signed and we don't know who was recommended by Chapple and then not signed.
I'll stick my neck out and say that he is a better judge than three unknown and possibly unqualified blokes sitting at lap tops in Belgium.
All the best Phil.
To judge his scouting ability by the various players (whether good or bad) we have actually signed is absurd. His job was to be aware of the potential market - strengths / weaknesses / contractual position / personality / etc etc and pass on that information with a recommendation. Who was eventually signed was down to the manager and was governed by the financial position at the time.
I approached him last month for a follow up interview about how this summer's recruits were located but he politely declined. Maybe his impending departure was one of the reasons behind this.............
I do feel however that as an English football team we need a chief scout of the UK who knows the English leagues and has excellent connections to enable us to have a chance with bringing in experienced, quality players. To do well in the Champ on a budget, look at Ipswich with their savvy English manager who has all of this in bundles. No surprise he unearths those discarded, unwanted but still very capable players. I hope we suitably replace PC, if not, I fear it is a false economy on saved wages.
;-)
It seemed inevitable though, even as far back as last season, I'm surprised Phil hadn't been snapped up by someone sooner. Good luck to him.
nearly 1 goal every 2 games.
Why wouldn't that be worth a punt in 2007.
Andy Gray scored 25 in 60 aps for Burnley 2006-2008.
1 goal every 2 and a half games.
why wouldn't that be worth a punt in 2008.
Tresol Kandol had just scored 8 goals in 18 apps for Millwall on loan.
nearly 1 goal every 2 games.
why wouldn't that be worth a punt in 2009.
Stuart Fleetwood scored 28 goals in 41 Apps for Forest Green.
1 goal every 1 and a half games.
why would'nt that be worth a punt in 2008, when he was only 22.
he only made 1 app for us.
Pavel Abbott scored 44 goals in 105 apps for Huddersfield 2004-2007
1 goal every 2 and a half matches plus 13 in 39 at Oldham. 1 in 3. 2009/10
Why wouldn't that be worth a punt in 2010.
The high turnover of Players which Chapple and CP signed and who hit the ground running in our League 1 winning side was a fantastic achievement.
The players not making it at CAFC may be more to do with the manager at the time, not the head scout.
You will always have duds, every clubs does.
Does anyone know if Chapple's role was one purely forcused on player recruitment? That is all anyone ever mentions, yet a huge part of scouting is future opposition preperation. No idea whether that falls under his remit or not.
Secondly, (and i'm sure @Tutt-Tutt will correct me if wrong), i'm pretty sure that when you lose a chief scout, if that person is moving to another club you invariably lose virtually your whole scouting network; his contacts at other clubs and in the game that he has built up, regional scouts who report up etc. It can take a hell of a long time to build up a solid network with the right coverage and know who in the game to trust or avoid, and it can be something that can be very quickly be lost.
Seeing 'names' of players that will come round on the PFA circulars will only help you make a judgement based on what you think your know of their ability. You really need to have a solid contact base in the game to get a true understanding of things like their character, whether they will fit into your dressing room, manageable hidden injuries they may be carrying, ability to step up if a youngster looking for experience etc.
Very much an underated role imo
If you ever went in the Scouts office at the Valley there was a white board with a list of 20 to 30 players there were looking at that MONTH.
It's a good, and worrying, point you make about the network and contacts going with the chief Scout.
And this on top of the academy recruitment guy leaving in the summer.
Still, he's not officially gone yet. Let's hope he's persuaded to stay.
so where the f--ck do you think we would be if he hadnt come in and got rid of the used car salesmen duo ? what league ?
grow a set
As KP is the perfect gentleman, he looked suitably embarrassed and did not answer.
I felt for him, so didn't ask again and we remain mushrooms.
