And I got pelters a couple days ago for saying AMB was being frozen out!
Pleased to see he'll be playing more football but starting to wonder if he'll ever get his chance at the Valley.
Phillips was 23 heading into the 18/19 season, Maynard-Brewer is 23 heading into this season. This was the year that, if it's going to work out, we needed AMB in the eighteen man squad and ready to take his opportunity when it comes, like Dillon did before him. But he won't get that chance now.
Dillon started that year second choice behind Steer, Ash is third choice behind Wollacott and MacGillivray. Even if there's a couple of injuries/suspensions in January and we need a keeper, who's to say he's not fourth choice behind Harness at this point? NH at least has a league appearance under his belt.
I'm not sure what we learn from him having another year at Gillingham that we didn't learn from his time at Ross County. That's why I believe this loan is more about helping him earn a contract at Gillingham's level, rather than push on and eventually grab the shirt here.
I am honestly shocked by the strong response to the conclusion I've come to after pointing out a few facts.
Maybe the plan is to have the 2 senior keepers battle it out thos season, let the loser go and repeat next season with AMB, but i doubt it.1 -

Presumably he’ll likely be recalled around November when Wollcot goes to the WC0
-
What’s happened to Nathan Harness? Is he still at the club or injured?0
-
I believe in emergency circumstances such as the club only having one professional goalkeeper, an early recall can be exercised at the discretion of the league.
Either way, happy he will be getting some game time by going to Gillingham. Harris a good manager, and much better for him to get a season of first team apps over being on the bench/in reserves.
If he's not regularly starting for Gillingham I'll be disappointed though.0 -
It’s so important for AMB to be playing rather than being 2nd choice. If that means playing in League Two and impressing, so be it.
He’ll come back with an extended contract and just like us signing Wollacott from League Two to be battling it out to be our number one now, AMB can come back and do the same when MacGillivray’s contract is up next summer.12 -
Emergency keeper loans mean that we can bring in someone on a short term deal, IF their parent club agrees. Why would Gillingham let us have AMB back between windows if he was a regular for them?1
-
Struggling to understand why a Charlton fan would describe him as such when he’s not played in a couple of years!12

I agree on your last point - I too hope that the no.1 Jersey will be his to lose. Gills lost 3 keepers in the summer and so AMB is the only pro keeper on their books at this time. They will no doubt bring in one more and so it will be interesting to see who that is. AMB will also have come recommended by Andy Hessenthaler at Dover no doubt who retains strong ties with the Gills so I'm optimistic he will get game time there....

jams said:Bit disappointed, was hoping to see him in the squad this year. Having said that, if he isn't going to be first or even second choice then best he's out playing - I would've hoped for a league 1 team but maybe gills offer the best chance of regular football.
In my mind reduces the chance of MacG leaving - can't see us just having wollacott and a youth Gk on the bench. Lots of games between the window closing and Jan, although not sure of the rules around emergency GK loans0 -
Has a real prince across the water vibe from some. Did he really set the world alight at Ross County?0

He'll probably be going to World Cup in Qatar. 3rd or 4th choice keeper.2

Is all the hype based on that Soccer AM segment where he made a save and Jimmy Bullard got overexcited?0

How do we know? Take O’Connell and Mandela last week. They may be really good, but it seems a number of us are already massively positive, or have jumped to the conclusion they will be very good signings. That’s all well and good, but I find myself more and more in the wait and see camp now.The same for AMB. I’ve got no idea of whether or not he’s a future number 1 for us. If he had had a run of games and was being sent out on loan, then maybe you would find it more of a head scratcher.11

I imagine as a fan base we are probably not alone at all in being excited by youngsters coming though, and we are in a fortunate enough position that we often get to see some of the more talented ones play some games.
However the harsh reality is that for every 1 youth player we have who does make it,
another 10+ will end up slipping out of contention and sometimes out of football completely.1 -

I'm not entirely sure 3 months playing in the depths of league 2 is going to change that.3 -
Never knew what the hype was about having never seen him do anything, but, posters who watch the yoot said he looked good plus training ground itk's always claimed he was very highly thought of.
Doesn't mean he still is of course, (if he was) will be a good loan to see just where he stands, but I'm with Callum in that I don't think we'll see him back here and starting, mainly, as I doubt a loan at the Gill's in league 2 will suddenly turn him into a ball playing goalkeeper for the Garner style....0 -

welcoming new players. It’s not that I think they will be bad signings (within reason), it’s more that because the last 2 years have been poor, I can’t quite bring myself to jump on the positivity bandwagon anymore until they start to deliver. As you say O’Connell has a body of work, but objectively I also see a 25 year old CB who’s just finished playing in a team that finished 18th in League Two. Not to say he won’t make an impact and others have quite rightly pointed out to me the success of others we bought in from lower leagues under Powell etc.
I also think it’s knowing the surgery the current squad requires. Because they were so poor last season, I’m apprehensive the type of players we’ve bought in so far and whether it’s enough. I am sure we’ll add a few more, but, maybe wrongly, I expect the next additions to be players of greater pedigree

See I did watch a few Ross County games last season as I have the ability to. (thanks @Big_Bad_World)
He was decent enough in all areas, makes some really nice saves, but struggled with some shots that he really shouldn't have.1 -
Poor old Ashley, the smell of pony shit, stale Stella and lucky heather!2

FWIW the only keeper on our books coming through who excites me is Kone. I haven't seen any errors from him in respect of shot saving at least.1 -

Born and bred Arvyle. Down on the Barbican growing up and I. Devonport End as a kid. Tommy Tynan, Kevin Hodges even Gary Nelson as some great players back then. The Shilton years and even Pulis and Holloway. And Charlton has it tough!!
Does he think he is ready for 1st team football? Really do not know how you will answer honestly0 -
Must have really upset Raelyn, instead of a week in Spain he gets a year in Gillingham!17
