Leciester get relegated and he will be number one next season
Schmeichel off to a prem team and Schwarzer will retire
That is potentially one of the more sensible posts today.
I'd assume he is thinking along those lines himself.
Me and sensible, don't think I have ever heard those 2 words said together
Maybe if they have told him that he will go they do not think he is good enough to be their Championship number 1. Goalkeeper is such an important position, I remember my disbelief at Curbs buying Deano from Bury for a £1million, when we already had reasonable keepers, on being relegated from the Prem and potentially other areas needing strengthening, but that proved to be one of Curbs soundest investment.
there could be any number of reasons he would be allowed to leave.
It may be a case that he has gone to the club looking for assurances about next season and they have simply said we can't promise you anything so rather than hold you back you can leave if you find another club. They didn't pay (a transfer fee at least) for him so it's not that they would really be making a loss letting him go.

I don't think Leicester will be relegated though.
They have won their last three matches and scored 10 goals in their last four games and have the following remaining fixtures:
Burnley Away (scored just one goal in their last seven games) Chelsea Home Newcastle Home (lost six on the spin) Southampton Home (just one point from last four away games) Sunderland Away (one win in last 10 and that was Newcastle with defeats to Palace, West Ham, Villa, Bradford and QPR) Q P R Home (two wins in last 17)

Agreed. We've had plenty of popular, very competent keepers over the years but Deano was the first keeper I saw where you felt that 6 or 7 points each season were won as a direct consequence of him being in goal. Think we would have stayed up in 98/99 if we'd had him for that season.
Average championship keeper if not good league 1 standard. Over rated himself and by others here. Not welcome back and he wouldn't want to come back anyway.
We have a good number one in Henderson and I'm sure Hamer would look to go somewhere new but some of the negative comments about Hamer on here are hilarious. He was great for us. He also made mistakes as all keepers do. People seem to confuse a player's personality for his footballing ability sometimes

Yep, very peculiar to see people criticising someone who was an integral part of a title winning side, particularly as he frequently made a point of saying how much he loved playing for Charlton.

we just don't do personality at Charlton , hence he had to go ... heaven forbid he may try and rekindle the tunnel jump , no thank you
Yeah, always wandering round the pitch celebrating goals (get back on your line), applauding each stand after a game (milking it), enjoying himself playing for Charlton (not on my watch). Bastard.

Average Championship keeper - well hes not, because he is plying his trade in the Premier League.
Over rated by himself and others on here - Can you show me where he over rated himself? Just an urban myth that he is "cocky" and "loves himself", no evidence of it. Based on this thread, it certainly doesn't look like people are overrating him, just slagging him off because they know that he was popular and because he has bettered himself.
Not welcome back - You'll be in a minority and I think its bang out of order to suggest that he is "not welcome" considering what he did for us in his time here.

Until he was offered a contract by them, but went for the Premier League big money...

Yep, headed off to the Prem for big money, where he got to turn out at The Etihad, The Emirates, Goodison and Anfield amongst others. Burn him!
Think Hamer is a decent keeper. His distribution is is strongest point which was class. With the pace we have in the team now he could start plenty of counter attacks.
Hendo is a better keeper though, and I wouldnt feel comfortable swapping them.
Didnt he go for something like £20k a week at Leicester?
Pointless thread. Leicester may stick with him as back up if they get relegated but it sounds as if Pearson has well and truly sussed him out if he is back up to a 42 year old.
Either way, we dont need him back so all the best Ben.
No thanks. He had is chance. I would rather keep Dmitrovic and Pope.
I doubt either Pope or Dmitrovic will be here next year. NP will be loaned out for the whole year and Dmitrovic will be playing for one of the network clubs
It doesn't matter. Hamer was offered a contract by us. He turned it down.
I would rather we signed another keeper than give Hamer another chance.
And what about the likes of Phillips and Mitov, who have both showed loyalty to Charlton?
Hamer was loyal. Yes he was eventually offered a new contract by us but only after being messed about for a few months with no offer at all. Plus it was only forthcoming when Leicester showed serious interest in him. People forget, Powell was fighting for Hamer from day 1 of Roland's takeover so he could hardly have felt part of the clubs plans and took a great career opportunity when his CAFC one looked grounded.

We would have stayed up with him; Ilic made about 7 mistakes mid season that cost us in several games. Royce was the only decent one we had (although not in Deano's class) and he had a long term injury

here he goes again slagging off everyones views as though he is god himself....
In MY view he is average, seen enough of his games to be able to come up with that conclusion. Plying his trade in the premiership, dont make me laugh we took him from Reading as 4th choice keeper cos they didnt want him and we were desperate. And hes plying his trade on the training field, look at the leicester boards to see how much they rate him.
Yes in MY view he was a legend in his own mind, and most of this thread are not saying what a great keeper he was in fact most dont want him back. If you went to blackpool on the last day of the season he was one of the first off and never stayed on the field long to say thanks to his ADORING fans of which many dressed up like him.
Not welcome back have you taken a poll then of all the fans.

Chippy - (adjective) '(of a person) touchy and defensive, especially on account of having a grievance or a sense of inferiority'
Players have short careers. Why wouldn't he go to a premier league side where he can earn more money? If he had ambition, he'd have thought he might be able to tie down the number one spot.
Didn't Ben Hamer sign for Leicester 4 days after Kasper Schmeichel signed his new contract. So no surprise that he was the number 2 keeper, even thou they are very similar because both are good shot stoppers but don't like crosses and being surrounded by bodies.
Should pick up a championship first team job as he is the same standard as David Button who's had a good season at Brentford. Ben Left CAFC in Credit but Henderson is surprising a lot of people with his calm and good positioning, and at last in his career is a number 1 keeper.
Good call by Ben Roberts, who recommended Hendo and felt Ben was going for the money and knew that he was going to be a number 2 unless Kasper got injured.
Being a number 3 must be real bummer for such a crazy and extrovert guy like Ben. All keepers make mistakes, but Stephen gets away with his as was proven against Leeds when the rebound from Morrison just missed. Ben was not so lucky against Colchester when he got caught with the ball at his feet.
If he's on £20K pw at Leicester, which Championship Club would be willing to match that ?
They won't. a wage cut if he's frustrated and want's to play; or back to sitting on the bench at best next season and counting his money. The only other option is if Leicester loan him out to a championship club and pay half his wages ? will depend what division city are in.

Expect a new 5 year deal.

I could see Hamer being a good option for someone like Forest. Karl Darlow joins Newcastle in the summer.
