Thanks for passing that on from Kevin, really appreciate it.

The only bloke on that awful Marvels Lane CC team who ever made any runs was Peter 'Puller' Cordwell, Kev's partner in crime at The Mercury! Our main strike bowler was a 68 year old off-spinner, the much loved John Pearce.

As for the England-Ireland game, time has probably clouded my memories (it was 25 years ago!) but I do remember thinking at the time that only Kevin Nolan would have had the balls to celebrate an Irish equaliser in the middle of some pretty hostile England fans!

Get well soon mate, all the best.
  • What an amazing thank you note. What a great writer. Funny, emotional and just bloody interesting. Could only dream to write like that.

Ps I celebrated the English and the irish goal in the Home end that day too. I had to ask my Irish dad when I got home what a Fenian was! I got out ok...
  • Thanks for posting that for us AB. Great to see that Kevin's illness hasn't blunted his gift for prose, but even better to hear he is on the road to recovery.

It's a pleasure to share, albeit a few years younger, so many things in common with him such as family background, football and heroes! Keep getting better Kevin.

Curb-it...been called that a few times over the years too...
  • He's simply (and lovably) a funny old bugger! Brilliant.
  • Absolutely great stuff that only that pen and notepad could muster, so pleasing to hear Kevin is hopefully ahead on points. Good luck mate and best of care to all of yours. And I was at the Wembley game too - still can't believe Dixon claimed that goal - reckon the inimitable Mr Nolan would have had him scurrying towards the dubious goals committee within minutes of the press conference to confess it was an own goal!
  • Great to see Kevin back in prose that is never prosaic! Top man - all the best for his continuing recovery - Steve

  • A wonderful message from the great man, so superbly written. All best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
  • Like many on this site I have never met Kevin, but through his reports on the addicks over the years I feel I know him as a friend. Get well soon..........He is part of the massive Charlton family, a family we are all part of, a family having a few problems, but like all families we will get through it and cone back stronger and better - just like Kevin.
  • Fantastic news all round! Glad to have you back, Kevin.

  • Great news.
  • Welcome back Kevin. Today just got even better.
  • never met you Kevin but you are part of what makes "My Charlton'" so take it easy and get well soon. Also thanks for reminding me of Marvels Lane near to my post war childhood in Grove Park.

The best news of the day !

    Welcome back, Kevin !
  • Missed this first time round ...so good to hear a positive outcome
  • This site shook me up a bit as I was not aware of his illness. (Memo to myself- keep up!) Had been following his charlton observations for years before finally meeting him around 10 years ago for a tour of the valley. One of his reports from the Lennie Lawrence era still resonates. I think its worth repeating here.

We were in the top division- division 1 exiled to the palace. As usual were fighting a relegation battle, playing Derby I think. We had sunk all our 'massive' transfer budget on a stocky goal scoring number 9 from division 2. This guy has a simple tap in for a goal - except the keeper, ex everton Neville Southall made an unbelievable save.

Kevin's report baldly observed ' a bundle of dirty laundry launched itself across the goalline to palm away the ball ' - Southall was IMO the scruffiest Keeper ever.

Welcome to the wonderfully entertaining world of kevin Nolan. Stay well Kevin.
  • Apart from the hugely witty, prosaic and knowledgable Charlton reports I think Kevin is probably the best reporter in the written word of boxing possibly ever. Get well soon Kevin.
