We are in free fall and will will do well to avoid relegation. The jury is out so far as Bob P is concerned but he is beginning to look very much like a rooky Manager. Perhaps we should have stayed with Riga??

    Relegation? Rubbish.
  • Not long back from the game and trying to look for the positives. Well, I suppose the second half performance was a bit better than the first. But that is about it. Hurry back JJ and Henderson we need you desperately.

The first half was just embarrassing. Headless chickens from start to finish not helped by gifting Blackburn/Rhodes two early Christmas presents. Both down to Pope through poor distribution. He also played Gomez into trouble just prior to the first and should have learnt from that. We looked like a team of midgets (especially upfront) against a big strong but pretty limited Blackburn side. Very little noise from the hardy travelling few as we were finding it hard to believe what we were watching. It really was that bad. Can't remember a shot on target.

Second half was a bit better but the damage was done and we were never going to score two goals. Both sides created more chances but Pope was the busier of the two keepers and to be fair he made a couple of good saves. We started to play the ball about a bit more but still looked pretty toothless.

Our central defenders stuck to their task and Solly tried hard but the rest struggled. No real leadership on the pitch.

Last week's Blackpool result was also well and truly put into perspective by their thumping today! Scary times ahead I fear unless we get a few in to strengthen the squad.

why rubbish ??? we've only won 6 games all season scoring 23 goals over those 22 games - only the bottom 6 teams & sheff w have scored less. If we conceded first we hardly ever come back & if we happen to let in 2 then game over.

without wanting to sound like a broken record, year after year, but until we have 2 or 3 proven strikers in the squad who can get 15 goals a season we will struggle.
  • Touch of the later day Powells about Bob at the moment; defensive outlook and players being played out of their natural positions. I do find it a bit incredible that we got so many players in over the summer and yet we're playing our best players in random areas of the pitch. Feels like Bob is flinging things at the wall and hoping some of them stick but very little is. Igor needs a partner (and a rest) to help us hold the ball up the pitch and we're desperately short of midfield creativity and the feeling that we can take games by the scruff of the neck and change things from the bench. If we can get some proper players in during the next window we'll be ok but if not we're going to have to make sure we pick up some early wins in the new year or we'll be looking over our shoulders come March.

    This, this, this !
  • Man up to those spitting feathers. Not gonna win every game, away at Blackburn isn't the end of the world. Keep our home form strong and we will be miles clear of the drop.

IMO Bob has done wonders with a small squad. To those with short memories, think back to last season, up until Watford at home. Really really think what position you'd rather be in....

Well as long as the seven teams you've mentioned continue to score less than us, we can't be relegated.

If we lose every game 3-2 and the seven teams below us win every game 1-0 then we would have scored more but have less points so get relegated.

So based on seven teams scoring less than us doesnt that mean we'll finish four places above the relegation zone... You've also got to take the fact that Blackpool will surely go down so one place should already be taken

I was merely pointing out to the stonemuse that we can score more goals than the others but still get relegated.

  • Shipping poor goals is a bit of a worry - hard to see where our next victory will come from.

Bit worried that our fans will lay into Pope at the next game.
  • I take your point @vff but regardless still in a better position, and I feel muchore comfortable than I have in previous seasons

Apologies @_nam11 after reading Fanny's great post, and with what has been said before, I deleted my comment. I've not too much to add. BP has made some mistakes with selection in the last couple of games but generally he has been OK (please BP don't make a habit of poor team set ups). The first two goals though were very poor ones to concede yesterday. That was down to defensive sleepiness (Cousins) and a goal keeper error. With quality in the team, I think BP will do better.

Everyone including the ground staff and tea lady, knows whats needed for Charlton not to struggle in the second half of the season. If quality / depth is not added then any struggling will be directly related to RD not wanting to consider the reality of the demands of running a Championship squad.

You weren't fat until you scoffed all those choccy fingers ....

    :-)

Great to see you and your lovely boys. Have a great Christmas

My worry is that RD has turned his attention from us with the chage in Fair Play. It was always at the root of his long term vision, developing a squad from young academy players sourced from across Europe and Africa to compete against spending constrained teams in the championship. Now the the rules have virtually doubled the allowance will RD be so happy to develop an Englush team or will he simply look for us to tread water in the Championship whilst seeking a highest possible bidder ?
  • Just seen the highlights.. We need Henderson back ASAP, the whole team looks uneasy in front of Pope, scared to take the ball from him and not confident he'll stop the shots. Our midfield needs strengthening, and of course another striker or two.

ALOT of change needed, and not just in personnel. I'm looking down not up and have been for a while.
  • Shipping poor goals is a bit of a worry - hard to see where our next victory will come from.

Those that do - if they do - should be shot.

When I watched Nick Pope against Forest on the stream he was literally faultless. He is going to be a very good keeper. Keepers develop more slowly than other players and very few of them are able to be consistently good at this level at Popey's age. Petr Cech was very much the exception that proves the rule.

It is bad luck that Henderson got injured - in a warm up - but in the keeper position you really are asking for trouble relying on youngsters.
  • Our set-up has two wide players on wrong side cutting in which needs full-backs to give width. Wiggins injury has stopped on one side and other injuries led to square pegs in round holes. Additions in Jan and we will be back on the up.
  • Great post FF, merry Xmas to you and your family.

Good journey north yesterday, mooch around Meadowhall, The Hobbit Part 3 and Zizzi's to finish the day.

Drive across the Pennines through some lovely scenery, couple of glasses of vino with good friends across from Ewood and then the match....

Have only read Big Bob's post match comments so far but he said it like it was, believe me.

Lack of momentum at the start, caught cold by the opposition players who were glued to ours from the first minute & we were 1-0 down courtesy of a Rhodes' strike ...well, he had to do it at SOME point after our record of keeping him quiet in recent seasons.

I really can't remember too many occasions when we managed to link a few passes together before the body blow of the 2nd hitting the back of our net. Blame ? No one player in a red shirt for me but the culmination of another period of relentless pressure from the Rovers with their very own Roy once again applying the final touch. And I don't believe anyone in the away end felt we could come back at that point.

Bob rang the changes, we huffed & puffed and possibly matched them in the second half but to no avail. Really didn't look like scoring & herein lies the problem as we all know only too well. Rovers were a determined, physical side as per usual and even when Dunn entered the fray with his zimmer frame, looked a better side than reflected in the Table. But, maybe this was in part due to the lack of attacking play from our lads?

So, no histrionics from me ; but a tinge of sadness that we have been reduced to what was a disappointing performance today as well as a soupcon of anxiety for the games on the horizon. It wasn't the defeat - we can't win or draw every game. It was the lack of options at our disposal & the ability to throw caution to the wind and go for it ; the lack of flair & creativity. How often has our lack of a midfielder capable of this been highlighted this season ? Le Coq could have made all the difference this afternoon but sadly, that boat has sailed down the Thames. Maybe a fit JJ with his ability to lift his team & urge them on would have made a difference....and Rhoys, solid at the back whilst offering width in attack would have been a huge plus....

But Bob has what he has. A group of honest professionals with, overall, a lack of Championship level experience. A dearth of options due to a small squad hit by injuries to key players. And a tough programme ahead with the likes of Fulham and Birmingham gathering momentum. I'm sure every Addick wishes he/she could be a fly on Roland's office wall & learn what his plans are for our Club come January. To deny his Manager the addition of a proven striker ( minimum !) would be cruel. To grant him his wish could be the difference between a disappointing season and one of huge encouragement for the future....the boost that EVERYONE needs.

    I'm keeping the faith

  • I would say that was the worst I've had seen us play this season. To me it did not look like the players was confident in the team picked.

Don't want to be to hard to Bob as know he has limited options but felt he made a big error in going with the same line up that struggled against Blackpool and I really don't wanna see Solly in midfield again.

Sad to say but think Pope, Fox and Piggott are not championship players and think if we are to improve they will have to move.

Does anyone know how long Rhoys is out for?
