Gordon Brown wanted to sell off Royal Mail in 2008. A bill was passed by the House of Lords but a proposed revolt by Labour MP'S prevented it from happening. GB cited a poor economic climate why he did not proceed with the sell off.1

It interests me that David Cameron has made a point of saying sometime during his Premiership something along the lines of 'there's not no such thing as society, there is such a thing as society'. I don't know if he was turning his back on the Thatcher legacy when he said that. I suppose he was a member of societies at school and University, the Bullenden Club, so he will interact with his like minded fellows...maybe like bankers, perhaps less so with disabled people who have an extra bedroom for visitors and carers to use. Lets face it the poor bankers have titchy houses, and loads of the benefit grabbers live in huge homes. maybe Cameron wants to redress that particular imbalance to create a fairer society.... that there is now such a thing as.0

Except you're talking about society in two different contexts. When Cameron refers to society, he is talking about individuals working together and in unison as part of a community. When Thatcher uttered 'there's no such thing as society', she was referring to the idea that there's some magical bottomless pot of money and goodwill called 'society' that certain members of society want to solve all their problems.seth plum said:It interests me that David Cameron has made a point of saying sometime during his Premiership something along the lines of 'there's not no such thing as society, there is such a thing as society'. I believe Thatcher said:
And, you know, there is no such thing as society.
There are individual men and women, and there are families.
So if you're right, then Cameron is saying the same thing, yet he made a point of counteracting the Thatcher saying.
There is indeed no magical bottomless pot of money, but it is how a government chooses to spend whatever there is that is interesting. Saving banks for example.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion. However I personally like what he says about controlled immigration (what is there not to agree with???) NO benefits to immigrants until they have been in the country 5 years (sounds perfectly reasonable to me) I could go on but I guess you "trust" Mr Cameron or even Mr Miliband? more?...........and for what it is worth I really don't think he is racist!sadiejane1981 said:

Found this about the non racist Nigel Farage:
'Nigel Farage has defended the racist remarks of the former Ukip candidate, Kerry Smith, forced to pull out of the race for Basildon.
Among other offensive comments, Smith referred to a woman with a Chinese name as a “chinky”, and has since had to apologise and withdraw his candidacy.
However, his party leader defended his use of the word on LBC this morning:
'Kerry Smith is a rough diamond. He’s a council house boy from the east end of London, left school early, and talks and speaks in a way that a lot of people from that background do. We can pretend if you like . . . If you and your mates were going out for a Chinese, what do you say you’re going for?'
Errr right. So if people are going for an Indian meal what do they say? Obviously not 'I'm going out for a Pack*e'.

Problem is I'm not sure when I'm being racist or not nowadays. You can't seem to have a nickname for any race, religion, country or region without someone (generally not from any of the previous list) feeling offended by it.

Here's one reason why I think Farage is a dick.1 -
The world has changed a lot & always will. 20 years ago, I dare say many people would have said "Chinky" as they did Paddy or Taffy and we were told to call black people "coloured".seth plum said:Found this about the non racist Nigel Farage:

People have to be very careful what they say these days, in order not to offend someone.
Yes, if you refer to someone as "Chinky" or "Paddy" or "Taffy", then you probably should have kept your mouth shut & thought before speaking, but it doesn't necessarily make you racist.
It just means you should think a bit more before you open your mouth.3 -

I would also like to add in general and not aimed at anyone in particular.
All the people that go well OTT jumping on the slighest utterance, that they construe could be racist, do absolutely no good for the fight against racism.
All it does is pee off the vast majority, that are doing their level best to do and say the right things, without someone being offended on behalf of someone else.5 -
I am offended on behalf of myself and my own. It's personal.2
