  • What a nothing story.

He didn't even say he had a problem with public breastfeeding, just that some people might find it a bit awkward, yet the media have completely taken his words out of context.
And even if he did who cares?? People are entitled to have and express an opinion I thought.

Just remember people aren't entitled to their own opinion if it conflicts with the opinions of the left.

    David Starkey.

i love david starkey on QT, gives his insight on modern day politics through the cold hard eyes of a historian. He looks at things how they'll be looked at in hundreds of years, which rubs the lefties up the wrong way because of his lack of empathy, which, when you have studied some of the bloodiest wars in history in excruciating detail, people struggling to pay rent when they have a £100 pair of trainers on doesn't actually seem that big of a deal. Not that i agree with him on everything, but his insight is a quite interesting dimension to a debate.

I agree. He doesn't suffer fools gladly, wish there was more like him on TV.

It's refreshing to listen to someone with opinions that aren't always 'on message'. I'm a fan of his Monarchy series too.

The establishment are gaining up on UKIP as much as they can as they feel scared by him. The way the media attack him over as something as pathetic as this is ridiculous.

    Nigel's facebook statement on this:

The media fabrication over breastfeeding has been extraordinary. Let me get this clear, as I said on the radio and as I repeat now, I personally have no problem with mothers breastfeeding wherever they want.

What I said was... and it is immensely frustrating that I have to explain this... is that if the establishment in question, in this case Claridges, wants to maintain rules about this stuff, then that is up to them, as it should be. I remarked that perhaps they might ask women to sit in a corner. Did I say I believe they should have to? No. Did I say I personally endorse this concept? No.

We do however have to recognise that businesses have a responsibility to all of their customers, some of whom may well be made uncomfortable by public breastfeeding. It’s a two-way street: breastfeeding women should never be embarrassed by staff asking them to stop, and most mums will recognise the need to be discreet in certain, limited, circumstances. It just a question of good manners, and in this case, accurate journalism.
  • UKIP thrive on controversy. The media are doing them a favour here.

Surely, our Nige is experienced enough to know that the words "accurate" and "journalism" are mutually exclusive?
  • The issue is he is defending Claridges stance on the issue. I think anyone in the public eye doing so is bound to get heat for it. It was a PR mistake on his behalf to do so as there was always bound to be this reaction to it.

  • Imagine that you are late and stuck on a crowded motorway....... We've all been there ...... what do you do? Do you get angry? Do you have a rant ? Do you blame someone?

If you were Nigel Farrage stuck on the M4 you would naturally blame .......... Yes ..... You guessed it......... It's the immigrants fault!

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-30370570

I think what is very telling about this is that for most people compiling a list of reasons a motorway may be busy, or even blaming someone, that this excuse would be very unlikely to be in a top twenty. For Nigel however it was top of the list. But there again he's not racist..............
  • Bloody hell you lot still banging on?
  • So, increasingly congested roads have nothing to do with the growth in population?
  • I went into a Sainsburys after the Forest match yesterday for a quick sandwich but there were none left on the shelves. Bloody immigrants must've bought them all.

Not the same though is it. More people in the country equals more people on the road. Whether that be from tourism, immigration or an increase in birth rates.

Absolutely - There is a list of reasons why we have traffic problems - Higher car ownership, poorer and more expensive public transport, more people working further away from home and making more journeys, out of town shopping etc. However until today I have never heard it blamed on immigration! - it is a serious piece of convoluted logic for Nigel to blame his poor time Mangement and road congestion on immigrants and it says it all about his grasp on the real problems in this country and what he thinks is to blame for them.

It says it all that when faced with a problem that Nigel's first retrort is to blame the outsiders.

Next time I get stuck on the M4 I will be sure to blame it on the increase in UKIP supporters!

  • The population of the UK has increased by 5 million in the last 10 years - where do you think they all are ?
    Hiding ?

Nope, they are on the motorway, the train/bus, in Tesco, at the doctors, picking the kids up from school - just like everyone else.

The estimate for population growth in the UK is about 250,000 additional people per year for the next few years.

    Get used to it.
    Or vote against it.
    The choice is ours.
  • I'm not struggling with getting used to it.
    Choice made.

  • FFS blaming immigrants for traffic congestion this has gone beyond parody now.

I genuinely hope people are on a wind up here.

Road use is actually down pretty significantly (about 5%) on the last 10 years.

How the fuck are all those bloody immigrants getting to the jobs they're stealing from "us" if they're not driving? :-)

Would be interesting to see that broken down into regions. Can't imagine road use is down in the South East.

    Sorry mate but you're wrong.

Based on 2003 figures (which are the latest available to compare with today) all traffic is up by 0.4 per cent over 10 years. Motorway traffic is up by 9.6 per cent.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/317454/annual-road-traffic-estimates-2013.pdf

Also, latest figures show that In Great Britain between July and September 2014, all motor vehicle traffic increased by 2.2 per cent, to 77.9 billion vehicle miles, when compared to the same quarter in 2013. This is the highest quarterly total recorded since 2008.

Bonkers to say the rise it's caused by immigrants but equally absurd to pretend that the huge influx of people into the country has no effect on traffic growth.
  • That's strange. THe Roadusers site says their stats are from the DfT but they are clearly showing different things Roadusers say 643bn km per year, DfT says 303bn miles). They must be measuring something different but not obvious what it is.
