  • Perhaps it's something to do with the product being faulty. Our away support really tailed of last couple of years due to the negative let's try to get a 0-0 attitude of the Management at the time. Hopefully the new regime will encourage more to go if there's a better chance we might actually win & go for a result on occasion. I think our away following will improve slowly, if only by small numbers.

I've done my bit for the next generation. 8 years old my son and he's done 12 league grounds.

I blame the 20/30 YO on here who aren't breeding enough new Addicks but spend time and money in the pub or going on holiday. You know who you are : - )

There you go, the answer was in plain sight all along, too much drinking & not enough shagging going on. Well that's me sorted what's the rest of your excuses..?
  • my excuse is taking advantage of the 'more of a life' excuse that Raz said.

Because ten years ago, there was no television, cinema, music, pubs, clubs, families etc....
  • [cite] Posted by:ltgtr[/cite] there's one simple reason as to why our away support isn't good these days and that's purely because we've got out of the habit of going..

Totally agree. That's why I suggested trying to incentivise people to start going again.

christ. did people sit around listening t'wireless reading their paper for news about charlton's new striker before going down t'road for fish n chips with enough change for a couple of penny sweets?

    2 reasons.... money!

has it always cost £60 for a train to liverpool/manchester? and has it always cost over £40 for a match ticket to some games? nope. have our wages gone up at the same rate of football prices? nope.

  • I would also like to agree with Suzi on this one. When I started getting into Charlton awaydays in the selhust years, I went on my own but even railfare, match ticket, programme, food drink, fags anywhere in the country I had change from a Bullseye. That would not even get you ticket into Chelsea nowadays.

Thought they were some good ideas as well, Bing.

yeah i see what you 2 are getting at, but thats not an excuse as westham and other clubs have to pay the same prices! so its not really a good arguement.

Our support is just normal away support, west ham and say the yiddos have exceptional away support, exceptional! The only club we can compete with away support wise is fulham, and there away support is like ours, not that good! Its something we need to look at, and these incentives the club throw out for us are excellent, but we just dont have the hardcore numbers willing to travel each week! Our away support is made up of all the same people, where as westhams support is different to ours, they have more people willing to go away and more often, i dont really no why, its just is, and this arguement is gettin a wee bit tedius!

Our support will grow, and we have had some decent turnouts this season, the only problem is, the record of one win and 4 draws away all season dont make for good travelling!
  • Totally agree MCS about other clubs paying the same prices and their fans having the same excuses that we have, and yet other London clubs seem to still take far more away than us.

Unfortunately that's just how it is at the minute but there is no point dwelling on it. just make sure those of us who do go away give the team the best support we can.
  • Is this a case of us finding something to moan about again?

    Aug: Dowie = Palace mug
    Sep: Players are rubbish
Oct: Kish and Mills are the root of all evil
    Nov: Dowie = clueless mug
    Dec: Les = Oh dear
Jan: Board have f'd up this season
    Feb: Valley Gold
Mar: Should've beat so and so
    Apr: Away support is rubbish

Okay I made some up there, but you get the point!

I am happy that we have a chance of staying up after a terrible (but strangely enjoyable) season. At one point I saw us going down with less than 25 points. I am excited about supporting Charlton again and after Blackburn may well go to Liverpool irrespective of what rides on it by then. Up and at 'em people!

Personally I hate travelling - I like going to places of course but not the travelling, certainly out & backin a day ... especially as I've done a lot over Easter. I would only consider going to Blackburn as an overnighter - and as a family man that ain't gonna happen! Well that or flights from City airport to Ewood Park!
  • Some cracking posts today Sco! That about sums about Charlton Life's inaugural season! But you forgot:

May: We're staying up! (moving subtley into: "Fecking 'ell, we're down")

I'm all excited about what we can expect next season now.

    Aug: Shouldn't have sold Bent
Sep: Players are rubbish (moving subely into "why aren't we bringing good youth players through..." and we know where that is going!)
Oct: Home support is rubbish (moving into "they're all plastics only, here for the Premiership" or "but at least their Hardcore and are here for raw Championship football, where men are men, la la la")
Nov: Board f'up last season, but they're not to blame for this pelt (moving subtley into: "it all went wrong when Parker, Murphy, Kish left" and then ending with ""why aren't we bringing good youth players through...")
Dec: Pards=Clueless mug (moving subtley into, "well you all wanted to force Curbs out for a bit of excitement and you've got what you wanted" moving subtley into "it wasn't Curbs but Day..." and finishing with "you can't have a goalkeeper as a coach, that's why we haven't got good youth players coming through...")
Jan: Should have sold Lisbie (moving subtley into... unanimous agreement)
Feb: Valley Gold (moving subtely into "zzzzzzzz" and "you're a feckin wanker" and ending with "This Discussion has been SUNK" ad infinitum)
Mar: Should've beaten so and so
Apr: Valley Flags are rubbish (moving subtley into "have you seen the new Addickted.net flags campaign?", into "did you see the one slating Henry!" and ending with Rothko taking them to the Hague for copyright violations only to have the judge dismiss his claims on the grounds that, whilst the slogans are clearly "borrowed" from VFC, the use of hundreds of yellow smileys makes them unique)
May: Where's everyone going for their holidays? (ending with the continuing saga of Ketman's adventures with six dozen young Doris' in Ibiza)

Incedently, come June 2008 I predict that the CL site will be wound down and spun off into the all new subscription based Ketman Life site with video diary, dating web cam and cricket score feed, as well as a comprehensive shopping site featuring a range of unique and branded products, including adult toys and prescription love potions, as well as high end audio equipment and obscure dance vinyl.

  • For what its worth I disagree with Mortain about Chelsea being a "bigger club" than West Ham.

For mine, yes, now Roman has gone down there Chelsea now have plenty of money and success and are bigger in those terms, that's true.

Also, for a couple of Bates' last years he was putting a lot of BORROWED money into Chelsea that was making them look a lot wealthier than they really were and enabling them to buy the likes of Lampard from West Ham.

However, if you go back over the last 15 years I am pretty sure that you will find that Chelsea and West Ham are very, very similar in terms of crowd support both home and away. Back in the late 80's and early to late 90's Chelsea were probably getting smaller home crowds than West Ham until their glory days arrived.

Certainly, on a personal level, I can say that I know an awful lot of West Ham fans in SE London, certainly a lot more than Chelsea (although this has probably changed a bit since RA arrived) and the Spammers also dominate the vast majority of Essex. By contrast, the Chelsea support base is now strewn across London and the south-east and probably has no real centre any longer.

I reckon that if you took the "Glory Hunters" out of Chelsea then their support base would be very, very similar to West Ham who are a very big club historically.

  • ***SIZE DOES'NT MATTER***
its about loyalty. i went to first game at 6. mansfield town away 77-78 season. 3-0 win. we never had good support compared to anyone. until we got into premiership our gates were almost identical in size over time to barnsley's. now look at us. i've said this before but i'll say it again. when i was a kid 70's-80's my dad was telling me that we were once big but due to spending 30 odd years out of top flight have become a small club. we aspired (so i'm told to be like dare i say it without laughing....Q.P.R. luton or laterly leicester....and even palarse were talked of as bigger than us. well in reality some of those clubs may be bigger if we were to swop places, but right now we are living the dream that i always thought could never happen. i live in sheffield and try telling anyone that united are bigger than wednesday, whatever divisions they might currently be in. i can remember at school when we used to take the p##s out of man utd fans, because then it was all liverpool. we are little charlton compared to many, and i supported them when they had no money, no fans (not many) and even no ground, so supporting them now has never been easier.

  • great post Lookie !!
  • If you could stand on a terrace and get pished and have a sing song it might be more appealing - you still can in Australia they serve beer on the terraces, which helps cos the football aint up to much.

I remember Villa in our first Prem season, standing on the backs of the seats and jumping up and down, a few on here came back with plastic blue seat bits.. its amazing what you can do when given enough rocket fuel. Now that was an away day..

I meant chelsea are a bigger club generally, not solely by fan base.
I would say we are probably neck and neck with sp*rs for having the best loyal support in london.

Had roman not bought the wrong slub this could/would have been very different of course.

Not intending a dig but when West Ham were in the Championship I never saw any West Ham shirts round where I live in Kent. Once back in the Prem I see them in their droves.

Is there any correlation between "loyal support" and seeing fans out and about in replica shirts? I don't know!
