how comes.....

west ham sell out 5100 tickets for their trip to wigan straight away and we are begging people to come to blackburn on the same day and struggling to get anywhere near the numbers they get..... i know they have 33k compared to our 25k at home games but our hardcore away support is abysmal in comparison..... is anyone else embarassed by our inability to attract real genuine footy fans who travel to away games not just the premiership homeeees we attract.....

• To be fair Blackburn is 15 miles further :)

lol
• Err the fact that West Ham are a bigger club than Chelsea let alone us may have something to do with it. We may be Premier League in name, but not really in fanbase.
• you forget we were nearly extinct not that long ago..
• this topic is never going to go away is it.....

West Ham are a huge club compared to us, we just DONT HAVE THE SUPPORT and all the recent initiatives wie have (like Valley Express) will/might only have results with the younger generations in 15/20 years.

I'm not embarassed of our support, i'm bloody proud of it.
• West Ham have a much larger and very loyal following than most clubs let alone us.
Wouldn't mind betting their away support over the season is better than Chelsea's and Arsenal's.

Some people on here seem to be forgetting it's not that long ago that 7,500 for a HOME game against blackburn would have been an achievement....
• Can we have a statistic of the number of times this subject has been brought up against that of Valley Gold! ;0)

I don't go away that much anymore, so won't offer too much opinion other than I like to see the Valley full first and foremost. Some of the recent club led incentives may convince more to try away games in future. If Pardew adds the "edge" he (and others) feel has been missing from the club, away games will be more attractive as we will at least travel win a plan and some fight. Charlton have been scarily bad on the road more often than not in more recent times.

be fair, for many west ham fans, this could be the last time they get to see their team play away in the premiership...

Disagree about West Ham being bigger than Chelsea but West Ham are a bigger club than us with a bigger active and latent supporter base.

We've done well to build up our home support and now we need to do the same with the away following.

OoharrMortimer, I know you're not happy with the away support as you mention it nearly every away game and I'd like to see full away ends every week but I think you are wrong when you start talking about "genuine fans" and being "embarrassed". A fan is a fan whether they go home, away or just occasionally. And I'm never embarrassed to be a Charlton fan.

Serious question. What can YOU do to change the situation? What action can YOU personally take to increase the regular away support and what could the club realistically do to support you in achieving that?
• West Ham have 5-10 times the support base we have, and has been built up over generations. List iconic figures over the years like Hurst, Moore, Peters, Brooking etc and we don't even come close.

But just because they are a bigger club to us, do not confuse that with them being a better club than us. And that goes for every other club out there. If bigger was best, we'd all be Man U fans.

And all the while there is a fair chunk of our support who would rather be in the pub, with the missus, playing golf, listening on the radio, watching Jeff and the panel or saying 'i've done my time', then its never really going to get any better, is it ?

• We have our iconic figures too: Sam Bartram, and ......erm, Derek Hales. And he played for West Ham too.......

So we must be (almost) as big as West Ham. ;-)

I should have said 'I've been embarassed by the numbers that we take to places' eg blackburn the day we won div1 in 2000 was a very poor turn out.
I just think the team has deserved better support for what it has achieved in recent years.
No one can change other peoples atttitudes to going away , you're either up for it or not.
If i knew the answer to getting good away support i'd share it with you but i don't.
I just wish we had better numbers away from home.
• Lets see if on the Monday after the Blackburn game we can get a Valley Gold/Crap away support/Stand up/sit down argument in the same thread :)
• lost generation....
• Being a subscriber to Valley Gold should I be entitled to a discount on the free coaches t'Rovers?
• Was it really that bad at Blackburn in 2000? I was only 14 but I remember it being a great day/atmosphere. Seem'd like we had millions up there.

One of the best football moments ever, apart from when I got home to be faced with my parents, who had found out I wasn't out with mates and had in fact snuck halfway up the country to see Charlton. Totally worth it though.
• i almost brought it up last time but thought it best not to, but after the man city game there was the stand up sit down debate, and i'd just like to point out that there was no mention of valley golders.
nor the fact that apparently they are all part of the sit down brigade. always annoyed me that as much as i don't want to join VG.

in fact, the advert on the cafc site yesterday made me shut it completely instead of continuing to find out what i wanted to find out.

Too right AFKA....

Oggy - I had a similar conversation with a group of my friends in the pub a few weeks back about the most famous player to come out of Charlton. Even the Watford supporters reeled off the likes of John Barnes, Luther Blisset and David James.

Most of the ones i could think off were fairly Cult players so was only really able to offer Paul Walsh, Paul Elliott, Scott Parker and Jermaine Defoe(which they said didn't count)... they laughed at me. I called them c*nts. the end.

we didn't have much over a 1000 if that, for what was a monumental achievement by the team
• you right it was poor, but again it was a bank holiday monday plus the fact the team had dicked around for the five or six games leading up to it.

you can belt up.

me and les were discussing last night, for someone that hardly spoke on sunday you an'arf say a lot on this board ya cheeky begger!
• We had 1200-1300 that day. Top 3 away days for me.

On a serious note going back to the original topic, ive been guilty of comparing us to West Ham in the past, and its ridiculous to compare.

We probably have 90-95% of our fanbase at every home game, West Ham probably have 40-50%.

However, you could also compare us with, say, Palace, who have got a bigger away support than us, thats what I dont like.

•
[cite]Posted By: PeakeysRocket[/cite]lost generation....
Think peaky has hit the nail on the head.
A good few of us on this site who are all now mid 30's travelled to most away games in large parties throughout out 20's when we were not tied down as much and for a while our away support was a decent size (all things considering). You don't seem to see the big groups of 20 ish year olds anymore !!
• Refuse to buy the lost generation bit.

Was at a do recently and there must of been 100-150 Charlton there from the supposed lost generation. As far as i'm aware, none of them were going up to Goodison.

The 'lost generation' does exist, it just doesn't travel that often.

We left the Valley 22 years ago and returned 15 years ago. A 14yr old in 92 is now 27.

When you look around the Valley, do you see a massive void of 27-35year olds ? Because i don't.

Pillow talk in the Sausage/Say household!

you got a couple of mentions last night, an' all rothko.
• we've been back at the valley nearly 15 years and reasonably successful for the last ten , yet home support has trebled and away support hasn't moved
