Church

Look, nothing personal - i'm sure he's a nice guy and all that, but why is he still even at the club? He's not a striker, backed up by the fact he doesn't actually score any goals! For the last couple of seasons, our main downfall has been the obvious lack of goals. With the exception of Kerms, we've had no decent striker at the club. I hate to say it, but I was disappointed to hear he played for us at the weekend. I hoped he's maybe moved on and found another club. I wish him all the best, I really do, but somewhere else. I thought he was out of contract? Has it been renewed?

  • He was signed one year ago, so he wasn't one of the guys whose contract was running down. He has one year left, I believe.
  • He's good at doing what he can do.

And he's crap at everything else.

But then everybody knows that already.

    Next discussion, please!

  • He did win a header last night amongst running down cul de sacs.
  • Personally hoping he'll not be a regular starter this year but if and when big bob picks him we'll need to get behind sponge foot regardless of historical performances. He's a striker and as such there will always be an element of confidence to his game. Having everyone on his back if/when he pea rolls his first shot directly to their keeper isn't going to help.

Who knows, maybe a 4-3-3 will suit him?
  • Church like the rest of out strikers needs a target man alongside him to win headers and a midfield which supplies chances. Until then Church, Igor, Reza will all struggle

In the replayed home match v Doncaster, he took his chance very well.

If I remember, a lung bursting run from the halfway line to pick up a good through ball, went past a defender, drew the keeper and scored.

He's probably one of those forward players who snatch at the so called easy chance, but score when they don't have time to think about it.

Can we get some kind words about players who play for the team please
  • The goal at Blackburn shows the quality he does have and certainly saw worse players in a Charlton shirt last season who don't get half as much stick as him.

  • At the end of the day Church has pace but he's not the type of Striker who can take the ball on the half-way line and run at the Defenders.. instead he's the type that will hang around the 6-yard box being a poacher (like his goal at Blackburn) or being a nuisance (like how he got in the Goalkeepers way for Dervite's goal against Bournemouth), put the service into those areas and we may see him score more often.

    Good post, Forever Addicted.

Re ... the Blackburn game, I don't recall him hanging around the 6 yard box.

Church made a strong run from deep, and was picked out from the left with a sublime cross into his path, which he volleyed home more or less on the run as he arrived inside the penalty area.

That goal and the one v Doncaster I described above, were both superbly taken goals at the end of Church's trademark strong running.

There we are, that's his strength. We need to play to it.

  • Think he'll be more of a squad player this year - got no issues with that as he can do a job off the bench to help close games out after venty boy has banged in his weekly hattrick.

Remember his Goal against Doncaster as well and said the exact same thing... In the same match didnt he have a hat trick of chances yet cos he had time to think he messed most up

thierry henry said when he was a pundit at this world cup that he always had the same plan when he had a one on one with a keeper so he wouldn't have to think about it, because when he would have to think about it he'd miss.

Maybe different because Henry's one of the finest finishers to have ever played the game...
  • Saying Church is no good is stating the bleedin obvious but he has another year on his contract and it might help his game if people got off his back and supported him after all he is a Charlton player .
  • Oh good. Another thread on the same bloody topic, just what we need!!
  • I think Church could be more effective in a three up front formation simply on the basis that then perhaps he would not be expected to be THE goal-scorer. Last season he had a lot of pressure on him, we found it hard to score until Marvin suddenly hit form at the last possible moment and Church has never been prolific. I admit to being very harsh on the guy, and that was unfair of me perhaps - but I still don't think as a striker he is particularly good. He can do a job, but we shouldn't be relying on him to be our source of goals.

Absolutely. You've got to know already what you're going to do and stick to it.
The moment you hesitate, you're lost.

When I was playing and went one on one with the keeper, I did the same thing every time - quickly get as central as possible, draw the keeper off his line and run at him as if he were a fullback; drop a shoulder one side and accelerate past him on the other.

The key was to get the keeper to commit.

Invariably I scored each time; on occasion a keeper guessed the right way but because I'd accelerated he could only foul me from behind - penalty.

Only if he's not in it
  • Gives 110 percent and clinical with his elbow. Sure he would be even better without these so called supporters on his back weighing him down he plays for us you know.
  • As the original post states i have nothing against Simon Church, but if we are to improve on last seasons league position then he can't start he's simply not good enough. He works hard for the team. But you need other strengths than that

Is that the Sheff Utd fan he called four eyes?

Simon church. Where do I start. World class player, brilliant shot on him and gets pass players with ease. All of those attributes which you wouldn't associate church with.

He reminds me of that one player in a Sunday team who always turned up, gave 100 per cent and at the end of the season always picked up an award for his hard work and commitment, even though everyone knew he was shit.

Hope he proves me wrong this coming season but that's like asking emile Heskey and Michelle Keenan to give birth to Asian children
  • I have no time for him roll on when his contact is up The only good thing he does is run about that is all he can do. He is like bwp he miss to many goal and does the hard work then cocks it up at the end
  • I hear what a lot of people are saying about people getting on his back etc. However, based on last season, he's not good enough. I also don't really understand how people can keep banging on about his work rate. I believe his runs chasing stuff down and running the channels are because he's not clued up enough to fashion any space or steal a yard on his attacker. I also question his lack of strength. He's quite tall and has a decent frame, yet he's got no strength holding up the ball. His touch is poor, I remember the Leicester game away and the ball just bouncing all over the place. I believe players on this site generally get a good level of praise when they do well, and are open to criticism when they don't. The thing that bugs me with those that choose to defend him is the work rate argument. If you aren't getting anywhere after a sustained period of time doing the same thing over and over, then it's time to try a different approach. I'm guilty of it all the time. It's hard to do, but I expect after a full season now, Church really needs to up his game. Running the channels is old hat.
  • If "running the channels is old hat" then if the ball gets cleared long we should just sit back and let the opposition attack us...

You attack as a Team so you defend as a team...

Church running the channels forces the Defenders into rushing their pass and so either hit it long back our defenders or slice it out for a throw-in, its not a defenders or midfielders job to do that as they've gotta keep their shape so the opposition dont find spaces inbetween the two lines

You want to be succsssful at Football then first and foremost you've gotta put in the hard work / graft as if your lazy and cant be bothered your ability / potential will disappear and you'll fall down through the Leagues
  • The Football season hasn't even started and the knives are out already. Brilliant.
