What is our Managerial situation? **Andy Hughes Has His Say - Page 3**

  • I think if he doesn't get it now there will either have to be a very impressive alternative appointed or a very good explanation given.

I'm hopeful he will get it but not so sure about my other two points if he doesn't.

RD doesn't seem to me like the type of man would would feel he had to give us fans an explination of any kind...............
  • Riga couldn't have staked a better claim for the job, the players seem to like him, he wants to stay.

We knew our situation weeks ago and yet here we are, still with no manager and a load of out-of-contact players who have no clue what the club's doing.

Meanwhile us plebby little fans all wait with baited breath for the end of the football season in Belgium and the latest whim of our chairman, without one word from the club.

    Great set-up this.

    I think that's a little unfair.

Unfortunately, all the evidence so far suggests that it's perfectly fair. We don't have a manager, we may well lose Dervite, Morrison and Hamer, and we are still completely in the dark as to the direction that Duchatelet intends to take the club in. If we were customers rather than supporters, and this was a normal company rather than a football club, I very much doubt that any of us would be willing to send any business in Charlton's direction because we wouldn't have a clue what we were getting in return.
  • Barcelona finished playing saturday. After the match themanager resigned, and we're told the new man (Luis Enrique) will start this week, as they are planning a major squad facelift.
As we are also due major changes, surely we could at least get the manager installed now?

I hope that hindsight proves my comment more than unfair, but this is exactly what it feels like for me at the moment. At best the situation is a little bizarre, at worst it's seriously harmful for next season. And as is pointed out above, this counts for the support side of things as well as the playing squad.
  • Alex 'Sandy' MacFarlane is long odds for his third spell in charge.
  • Belgian league has one game to go. There was a rumour that our next head coach might be under contract in Belgium?
I'm sure some of our players for next season will be loans or transfers from the network but there is no reason why there won't be others recruited from elsewhere.
Perhaps Liege and CAFC will have Riga and Luzon as head coaches but no idea which way round?!
  • Do Spurs have a manager yet?

    Or Norwich?

The current situation of seemingly limbo and no news even on youth contracts like Edwards and Pyke (not blaming the comms team one little bit for that) is far from ideal, IMO, but if we don't yet a manager in place then we don't yet have a manager in place.

Agree about the other teams with no manager,

if we're not blaming the comms team who are we blaming , if these youngsters have signed contracts why havnt they been announced , was thinking about this earlier , is it the comms team not doing their jobs or what ?

  • I too am hoping that Riga gets the job, but if I'm honest that's because I thought he did well last season and because he's the Devil we know, but for all we know Duchatelet might think he can do better.

I've no idea whether that's the case or whether or not Roland is capable of delivering an upgrade, but what I do know is that it makes sense to think critical decisions like this through very carefully and to interview a range of candidates, perhaps including some left-field options. It always surpises me how quickly managerial appointments get made. Perhaps that explains why so many Managers then get the boot within twelve months.

It would be nice to have some news for sure, any news, but what's most important is that we get some good news and that means concrete evidence that we'll be putting out a competitive side next season, let by a very good coach. The alternative scenario, to quote Jose Mourinho, is that we'll be playing the kids. It's early days yet.
  • All will be revealed in due course. Then A) We will really have something to moan about. B) We will be very happy and looking forward to the new season. There could be a C.

C = They rename the club to

"Belguim Waffle Athletic" and we all end up supporting Junior Reds.

The difference being they both sacked theirs. We had / have one in place and want the same man here next season. It's less complicated than any team that has sacked their manager.

But it's not a similar situation is it. We had a man in place until the end of the season. That's all. No pre contract agreements. No idea whether Riga would wish to stay or was going to do well. He came in as a favour to RD.

It now transpires that Jose would be willing to stay if the deal is right. Perhaps that's what they are talking about. It not something that can be resolved in an afternoon nor should it be.

It might also be as mentioned by others that RD had someone in mind and already made approaches and now needs to assess his options. Yes I want it sorted out soon but I want the final choice to be the right one.

You said the situation is less complicated than for teams that have sacked their managers.

I'm saying it is the opposite or at least no better.

  • Of one thing I am 100% certain: we will not be appointing the likes of Dowie, Pardew or Parkinson! I both hope and expect the next head coach to be Riga or someone equal or better. Why go backwards? What I saw of Riga leads me to suggest he could take us to the top ten or even top six over the next 18 months.
    No pressure Roland ;)
  • I would have thought that the end of the Belgium league season will see Roly move into decision making mode. There are some excellent coaches to choose from so I for one will reserve judgement until an announcement is made. I'm not negative and I'm not positive as yet I'm just plainly curious!

Doesn't matter who the coach is if the owner continues to fill our squad with players on a par with the rubbish he's brought in so far.

  • 3 months.

What, you mean as high as 9th???

9th is probably the best we can hope for. Regardless of who the manager/coach is theres a lot of clearing up to do after the last couple of years of underinvestment. RD seems to be cautious as regards FFP so is unlikely to be splashing obscene levels of cash to reach the Premier League in short order. I reckon he will have a thought out plan (he seems the planning type) which I think will be to strengthen the academy to achieve that return to the PL. It would be the way to do it long term without spending lots on bringing in existing talent.

Not sure how it will pan out but I really think we need to see what happens in the next two weeks. I reckon Riga will have a role either as coach or within the academy. Whats certain is that if RD isnt splashing the cash on players there will be no well known managers coming in.
  • @iainambler‌ I think you will find that @PragueAddick‌, and correct me if I'm wrong, was commenting on the post made by S_R that we could make it to ninth and that seems to be something that would be a very good achievement, however Powell has already managed it.

That's my take on his post anyway!

Why 9th? Is that because you wish to look forwards to next season or look back to 2012-13 and CAFC under Powell?

Let's not be afraid of the future and enjoy the season to come. Personally I'm looking forward to the announcement of the head coach, the retained list and next season's fixtures.

    Explains the long odds then.

  • There's no point us winning the league or the playoffs because Curbs already did that.
