This plan of Dykes, is it set in stone what he is proposing or is it just a discussion document?

    Discussion
  • A fantastic piece. Agree with every word. Wish I had written it!!

    Seconded.

Greg Dyke may actually achieve reform by enraging the sleeping masses and finally uniting them in opposition.

I also found the latest income figures interesting. Ticket sales are contributing less and less as a percentage of revenue. GD knows where the big money lies! If supporters of PL clubs start to protest that they are paying much more for their tickets ( in some instances double the amount), than comparable European supporters, we might find a way to unite and kick up. The Wembley meet up looks interesting. Does anyone intend going eg from the Trust, G21 etc?

  • Didn't even realise the EPPP was set up in such a vile way. The cost of coaching qualifications is just another example of why we fail to perform on the international level - our coaching teams are a small cadre of ex-players who have the contacts and money to afford and get onto these sources. Why is Allardyce implicitly more capable me or you by virtue of kicking a ball around for two decades? This is the clear implication of the current system that ring-fences participation in these courses behind high-costs and incredibly stringent availability. This type of mentality couldn't exist in many other places in business or more broadly.

It's like asking the derby-winning horse for race-course design tips. Just because you can run in a circle doesn't mean you know how to design or manage the course!

We don't yet know if individual Trusts will be invited. I would certainly love to be there.

  • Thanks SA. Counts me out, day after return from holiday. Will make sure everyone on the Trust team has it.

  • Football League officials are due to present an alternative proposal which would see some Premier League B teams play in an expanded Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, which would include a group stage. It is unclear, however, whether that would interest top-flight clubs.

Would any FL club really want an extra 3/4 games in the Johnstone Paint Trophy?

The panto season starts earlier every year !!

  • Interesting article. Please also don't forget to sign the petition if you haven't already done so and to spread the word.

It's stalled a bit recently after the early surge - just under 34,000 signatures at present- and it's important to let Dyke and the Football League know what many supporters think of these half-baked and, indeed, dangerous plans. Nor will they stop at League 1 level; after an appropriate period of time, there will be pressure for Premier League B teams to play in the Championship. Yet again the FA's "usefulness" is epitomised by their initials.

Football League clubs reject proposal by the FA for Premier League B teams to play in lower divisions
  • Quite right. Glad some sense remains.
  • Maybe it will stop the big clubs accumulating players just so that other clubs can't have them.

  • It really is quite remarkable, isn't it? Greg Dyke, as Chairman of the FA, personally leads a high profile review designed, he says, to more effectively develop young players and, along with other initiatives, strengthen the England team. He makes some very controversial recommendations which immediately receive a hostile reaction. He claims to have consulted widely. Yet here we have a critically important constituency kicking a key plank of his plan straight into touch. What planet is he on? It really does make you wonder. I'd have thought his credibility is shot to pieces. So depressing.

I said that about Michael Gove, but credibility has not proven to be an issue for him. He who helps make the dosh wins the day.

Are they finally getting the message?

God it has taken a long time for the penny to drop.

The government and the lottery should fund floodlit 3g pitches at every school in the country. How can they complain about fat kids, yet after school for most of the year there is nowhere to play a friendly game of footie with the school down the road. Same with netball and all other outdoor games. Schools would benefit from letting out the facilities later in the evening and weekends.

Teachers who take football should be fully qualified, and so should any manager/coach of kids football. We need a few thousand more!

Goal size, pitch sizes need to be made smaller as do numbers per side if the 'kick high and long' tactics are going to change. Basically free to sort.

Why a trial? We all know the 3g are needed. Stop dicking about and get on with it.
  • You can have all the posh pitches you want. They will then charge more to use them and families are already forking out large sums to buy kit, balls, flags etc. Money is needed and the PL will continue to ignore that basic fact and continue to buy their players from overseas.

    Sad but true.
  • Have to agree a lot with the last few posters.
Trouble is the school's are, and have been 'outsourcing' there football pitches and premises to management companies. Even most of the councils do this, and the cost is going up all the time for conventional pitches. The 3g pitches are way over subscribed around here ( Bexley, Greenwich) for Adult team's let alone for youngsters. Until the powers that be put in a massive investment in 3g pitches, I feel the game will decline at grassroots level. I welcome the investment that Dyke has put in , but it should be four times that amount. Be good to see all Professional clubs, directly involved with schools/academies in the coaching. One thing I would do is put a direct levy on all football player transfers, over £200,000, say 30%......going straight to organizations like the football foundation for them to manage, into providing 3g pitches. Providing or upgrading 1: 3g pitch at Meridian sports club opposite Charlton Park simply does not cut it, as welcome as that investment was welcomed.
  • Went past a school in Crawley today and saw a banner that suggested it was receiving some form of funding from Chelsea, could that be a way to pay for the upkeep on these new 3G pitches? Surely the FA could just implement a ruling in FFP that meant clubs have to donate an amount of money to grassroots sport in the local area if they want to make big money signings?
