I think it will happen. RD would in my opinion have to already have cut and dried a deal with someone else which incidently has been rumoured for him not to offer the job to Jose. Riga has succeeded in his "mission" and has obviously enjoyed his brief time with us. He has the players and fans very much onside and he and the club are a good fit.
Provided the RD and JR vision are along similar lines then I doubt there will be too many problems.
The sponsors thread threw up comments made by Katrien that the club were looking to conclude its transfer dealings by the end of June which to me implies that the players wanted are at least already identified and perhaps in some instances already lined up. It seems to me inconceivable that JR and KF wouldn't have had input into that list. My guess is that we are in for a very interesting couple of months.
For my part I really hope JR signs for us ASAP.
I agree with much of what you have written here, I disagree with the outcome scenario.
Of course it would be brilliant if JR stayed. He has transformed a disasterous position following the sacking of CP and the horrors of the Blades game. For that he is already a legend imho.
I have no doubt that somebody else was lined up to take over. Given JR's recent comments about his future, I read them as not indicative of him staying. I hope I am wrong. If I am right I hope we sign somebody whose past track record is higher than JR.
Whoever will be maanger they need to be manger quick, especially if they are not Jose. they will need to assess the players and their contracts and get the ball rolling on the summers coming and goings. KM wants most of the incomings in by end of June thats not as far away as it may seem, although she is not the first to have made similar assertions only for us still to be struggling on the first day of the new season.
JR has worked wonders with this team, restored confidence, got them playing much better football, won over the supporters, RD would be a fool to let him walk away
A no brainer for me. I have said elsewhere that his chemistry has been fantastic for Charlton and the Championship. This is so important. Sign him up RD, and more of the same please Jose.
Assuming Riga WANTS the job then it's a no brainer.
If a full time position as manager of charlton is offered and his heart isnt really in it, which is quite possible, then perhaps no.
The thing about all this is the man clearly knows what he is doing in regards to football management. His experience obviously adds to his confidence in reference to people stating how calm he was during the difficult period.
Only niggle I would have is that on the odd game under his management the players didn't really seem that fired up, ready for the fight. That is mostly due to the fact that we played 2 games a week for 2months. Higher workload and tired legs.
There has most certainly been a two way thing going on. In his early interviews Jose Riga emphasised the value of everybody collaborating. The players have not thrown a moody, they have co-operated and collaborated otherwise we would've had a Moyes type situation, and I suspect that despite the pain, Chris Powell would have intimated to the players on leaving that they should remain stand up guys. I also think the same can be said for Alex Dyer and Damian Matthew, to all intents and purposes they have been open, generous and collaborative with Jose and Karel. Now I know that if peoples are getting paid they blimmin well should work for it, but CP AD and DM were/are very close and the loss of Powell must have had quite a deep effect. However I do believe that there has been a very very decent approach to it all especially by AD and DM working with Karel and Jose. I think that the achievement in staying up has been a team effort from the coaches, and I suspect that Jose Riga may be one of the first to acknowledge that in public and in private.
lol you've gone to a lot of effort to not give JR any praise there Seth
Not at all.
I reckon I may be right that JR will strengthen his standing in the eyes of many when folk realise that he has valued the input of the 'old guard'. JR didn't swan into the place and tell all and sundry to do one, and those who suddenly had to make adjustments for JR have clearly helped to bring about survival. Do you think that JR is now basking in the praise and intimating that it is down to him and him alone?

Seth, surely the point is the players, coaching and backroom staff all bought into the new regime which suggests something so positive. How many times, in fact, much more often than not, do we see a new regime fall flat on it's face? I say well done to RD, to JR, to all the coaching staff and especially the players for buying into it. An exceptional result for all - especially the supporters.

Agree, and that is the point I am making, it has been a collaborative effort.
He's a classy dude. Makes subs at the right time, realises when players aren't good enough. Given that the loans have been a bit meh and the network contingent have been largely shite he's worked wonders with a team that really were relegation standard.
To turn us into the equivalent of a top 8 club after that performance at Bramall Lane is outstanding. I can't think of any other manager in our history who has made the equivalent impact given the situation he came into.
Jose told me tonight he would be staying but before anyone gets excited I think he mis interpreted my question of "are you going to stay " as "are you going to stay at the POTY" to which he answered. "Yes of course. This is part of my job and it's very important to be here" I must admit my heart skipped a beat before I twigged.

Jose Riga managed to get Charlton playing a more open and passing game. When going toe to toe against the stronger teams, the gulf in class and quality really showed and led to defeats by some margin. To his credit, Jose Riga perservered with the style and it led to positive performances and results sufficient to keep Charlton up.
On a decent pitch, with quality throughout the team, and a decent pre season with Riga in charge, the results could be impressive.
I agree that Riga has done a great job in keeping us up, but we did suffer some appalling thrashings under his leadership.
I commented in another post that he needs to learn to grab or steal points in the tougher games. For me, many of the recent games simply were not winnable because the opposition were so much better technically and that usually went along with a much higher wage bill - they simply had better players. If CAFC can strengthen with a few decent players who know how to handle Championship footie, along with the increasing experience the current youngsters are getting, we should, in principle, be OK. We need to learn to steal points, that's for sure and sitting deep with ten men behind the ball and no self belief is no solution to keeping the opposition out - need to show them early doors that we have a counter-attacking threat, for starters and that we can defend.
I also think we have been too open against the better teams and generally got stuffed as a result. It was irritating at the time but fair play to him, he stuck with finding a formation and personnel that worked and recent results show he got there. If he does get the job full time, I hope and expect he'll work on different approaches that are more appropriate for those situations.

What appalling thrashings ???
Apalling thrashings is a bit strong. Charlton were outclassed against Burnley (0-3) Leicester (0-3), Derby (0-3), Brighton (0-3), Blackburn (1-3), Reading (0-1).
Going toe to toe against the stronger teams, playing more open football this can happen. The more open, passing style lead to getting some good away results Leeds (1-0), Forest (1-0), Wendies (3-2) Blackpool (3-0) and vital home wins against Yeovil (3-2) and Watford (3-1).
The passing football was definitely better to watch, but the gulf in class and quality against the stronger teams was not enjoyable. Against Burnley, Reading and Blackburn the game was effectively over after 60 mins. The last time I have seen Charlton get so comprehensively beaten by the top teams (in form) in the division was in the premiership.
For Charlton to be able to improve and compete more strongly in the division, there needs to be quality throughout the team. Charlton supporters will see what happens in the next 2 to 3 months. There is a lot of player contracts and transfers to negotiate and agree. Katrien Miere will hopefully be very busy (or is in the background already).
I would be happy to see Jose Riga stay in the job. Jose defintiely needs more quality to work with and needs backing.
I'll be very happy if he stays, he's earned the chance, and hopefully RD will back him in the summer. He did make some odd decisions, but given the squad, thats probably normal. More Riga please.
I was at every 3-0 defeat we suffered this season and the only appalling thrashing I witnessed was away to Doncaster.
Were we conceding late goals in a few of those games? Just wondering if heads were dropping/morale issue or if we simply couldn't hold back the tide against the better team on the day?
I was very impressed with his speech last night in which he stressed that what he found on day one of his arrival was that everyone at the club shared the same values as he does. 'Values' was a word that cropped up a lot in what he said. It was also interesting that when he presented the Young Player of the Year to Jordan Cousins he talked about how he was reluctant to single any one player out for an award because football is a team game and it is the 'collective' that matters.
Chris Powell set up his teams fundamentally not to lose. We rarely got whacked but rarely looked capable of scoring goals. Riga's more attack minded set up made us more vulnerable defensively but also allowed us to pick up wins and the valuable three points that go with it. That kept us up.
A good example of the difference in attitude was with substitutions. SCP would invariably bring on a defensive player towards the end of a match to protect what we had often leading to an unbalanced team where we struggled to get out of our half. Inviting teams on. Riga often brought on an attacker at this point to defend by attacking. Different ethos with different set of results.
Make no mistake, Riga kept us up and even as a deep rooted CP fan I don't think he would have.
