Just sit in the home end - you get a better view and a nicer atmosphere. I've been doing it for the past several seasons and can't imagine watching from the away end again at one of the better attended matches.
In essence making you a fan of every team except for Charlton
Why does the location of my seat determine which team I want to win?
Because segregation at football in England is the norm, may even be law
I'm always in the standing camp and wished our whole end would always stand but this is Charlton hence it will rarely happen. I understand how it causes problems the rare times we sell out.
But on Sat we far from sold out and there were two distinctive standing areas on Sat which people seemed happy with. I was far left at the front, standing, with empty seats all around us. If people in the more populated but sitting sections of our support on Sat wanted to stand, I don't know why they didn't just move to where they could do so - it was simple and easy enough.
The underlying problem is we have a ridiculously (more than most clubs at this level) divided support between 'lads' and the rest. This is exaggerated on days like Sat (decent, close awaydays) when I would say it was a 20/80 split, as evidenced by it being rocking under the ground before and at HT by the 20% but morgue like in the ground when they are diluted into the rest of the support.
Palace and millwall away seem to be the only games where the balance gets closer.
On the whole I think the people in the 80% don't have it too bad compared to lots of clubs where the % is the other way round and the lower % of 'normals' have to just get on with it.
This will always be a problem at Charlton as far as I can see.
Agree.
The divide in support is massive, you have the group that are a bit rowdy like to stand sing and jump around and then you have the people who would rather sit down and can get irritated when surrounded by the rowdy groups.
And I think that's why a lot of charlton fans don't see eye to eye and you hear about bust ups amongst ourselves when we take large away followings, because the divide is so apparent.
You're probably correct (ironically perhaps) that our travelling percentage of scum (TPOS) is lower than most clubs, but the fact that it seems to have gone from nothing to 20% in short order makes the change more visible than if say Millwall's TPOS goes from 75% to 80%.
We really do have a different breed of supporters who follow this club. Don't think I've ever heard a fan of any club say they would rather be with the opposition. It's really weird.
I personally don't see why anyone would travel round the country to sit in silence, but that's your prerogative. But to brand those who want to stand and sing as scum is ridiculous.
Why should someone who has purchased a SEAT, have to move to accommodate someone who wants to stand?
Everyone should be sitting down as that is the current regulation. If you are asked to sit down by someone whose view you are blocking then you should either move or sit down.

I didn't equate people who want to stand and sing (ie. support) as scum, but people who turn up to a public event smashed and intimidate others who have a right to enjoy the game are in short, scum. It doesn't happen at other sports or at concerts etc.
Personally i'd want more of our fans to stand at away games, makes for a much better atmosphere and IMO is much more enjoyable. Thing is those who sit, stand for 15 minutes at half time. I know it's a little different but surely it could work the other way round?

You can't have been to many boxing events or music festivals!!
You get pissed up dickeads at loads of busy public events, lets not use the it's just football cliche.
The sitting down standing up debate will never go away untill safe standing returns, The Amex would have 'new ground syndrome' people think that because it's an all seater stadium that means there going to sit and other fans see it as another away game
(And NO fighting with your own fans isn't a typical away game)
Well reading this thread answers ooh ah's perennial question as to why our away numbers are so bad.
Any decent family fan reading this thread would be reluctant to take his or her children to an environment where they may well not see the match because of selfish, pissed up would - be hard men who would run a mile if challenged by anyone other than women or pensioners.
The sad thing is that there is undoubtedly an element amongst our support who consider those who carry on in such fashion to be "proper" fans as can be gleaned from this and other threads on the subject.
Reading back on this thread, I can't believe someone's had a moan about the song 'stand up if you love charlton'. Can you just imagine what our support would be like if some people had their way?
It is bollox to say that only those who stand up sing and that those who sit ,do so in silence.
Not convinced it's total bollox, yes some people stand and don't sing, however the atmosphere tends to come from the people who stand. Take one trip to The Valley and your'll see all the atmosphere comes from the Covered End where people stand, whereas the East/West stands are very quiet.
I only tend to go to away games from Brum northwards. I'm getting on a bit and due to a medical condition cannot stand for long periods of time. Luckily at most grounds there is plenty of room so I can move towards the front and let the younger fans stand towards the back. However if the away end is full there can be a problem which to date has always been solved by a bit of common sense. Finally yes I can sit and sing and always do.
As for sitting with home fans, no way they tend not to like my rendition of VFR.

Can we please stop the embarrassing comparison with millwall please? Time to get off the moral high ground and grow up.
POST 96 FOOTBALL IS A FUCKING JOKE.

I'm not saying they weren't all Charlton fans, but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't just mates of fans, out on the lash in Brighton.
Anyway, it wasn't as bad as is being made out.
Just thirty or so drunk youngsters throwing a bit of beer around & possibly standing up in the seats.
There wasn't any violence that I saw.

A bit embarrassing to be honest
