He made some very poor decisions in his passing and didn't create enough of an offensive threat
I.don't mean in the Ross barkley mould I.mean in how quickly he went from breaking up attacks and moving the ball forward
Until that is in his locker as the norm then the prem is too far too soon
this is mad
they're two entirely different sorts of player
Fair enough, Barkley its way too attacking as an example, but the point remains, you must be able to attack a lot more effectively than he did last year in the prem.
Would love to see Diego Poyet one more season at Charlton. That would be a definite tipping point for me in terms of how the club is being managed.
Many posters have stated on that tipping point thread that they want to see the whole squad and the first few games to make a call. If CAFC cannot sign its to pyoung players like Poyet (and Gomez) then this is a real problem. The club can avoid expensive 25+ players by ensuring a good academy AND signing the best into the first team squad AND acquiring loans / short term contracts to top up the squad.
Every week we are getting to see another signing or two like Ansah ... and Pope on a long term deal. So let's see how June and July pan out. Give me a midfield of Wilson, Cousins, Jackson, Poyet, Ajdarevic and that looks good to me.
@Seriously Red I still think that midfield is lacking a creative spark. We have to have that otherwise we will again not create enough chances for whoever our strikers might be.
He was cautious at times with his passing but he was playing a holding role in team that were pretty poor going forward. He also picked out some great passes and rarely gave the ball away.
While some midfielders are never going to be known for their range of passing you could see with Poyet has the ability. Put him in a better and more attacking team with pace and movement around him and I think he'd look even better.
Twenty games is nothing. Agreed, in probably two thirds of them he was probably stand out player. There was an instant bonding with the supporters. Here was this homegrown, combative midfielder who displayed qualities we had been lacking. He was committed and took a lot of responsibility on his young soldiers.
I know it may sound a stupid thing to say but his hair have him an identity. Something he was recognisable by. Something that stood out and added to the element of roguishness about him. It marked him out as a target to opposition players...'look at that tart with the long hair, let's show him early who's boss...' kind of mentality. And he rose to the challenge and often won it.
Add that to his famous surname and we had a ready made saviour.( I must add that Jordan Cousins in my eyes did as much to ensure our survival I with his excellent reaction to playing in several unpreferred positions and playing nearly fifty games.)
So as much for his own development as our success next season I hope Poyet signs. I rate it as 30:70 at the moment.
I said not in the Ross barkley mould of offensive play
I ain't comparing him to barkley your right they are too different style of players
Understand what I mean by offensive play
I am saying that Diego is very good at what he does very good but once he does it his passing choice is not where it needs to be at yet to be thinking about a move to the prem
It will undoubtably get him to the prem in time he is the best midfielder at our club by some stretch but we are a bottom half championship club
Personally for his development I don't think he is ready for the premiership just yet
He needs to be able to make the errors he does with a club that they won't be overly noticed
He does make rash decisions in his passing between the mid and back four and he does not move the ball in a forward direction quick enough this will come no doubt with better players around him
The difference between him and parker or shelvey was that they attempted to make those offensive decisions and there was no one to receive them
If Diego can add that to his game then he will be a prem player
@Seriously Red I still think that midfield is lacking a creative spark. We have to have that otherwise we will again not create enough chances for whoever our strikers might be.
I once read somewhere that the killer ball with the highest % goal rate is from somewhere near the centre circle to the edge of the box as opposed to going down the wings. In those last few games where Harriott and Sordell were scoring for fun many of the goals were created with just such a ball - including a defender back pass error with the ball taking the same path for Sordell to run on and score. Is that what you mean by creative spark or do you mean the 50meter crossfield passed that open up teams by switching play - kinda thing Poyet and Ajdarevic were doing? Many fans are quite rightly worried that we won't have a competitive squad. If we have Poyet, Ajdarevic and Sordell back then I see a team that can keep us out of the bottom six. Ideally the club will be signing one or two players a week from now on so let's see what we end up with.
His forward pass may only be 10 or 15 yds and it has been on in games yet he chooses not to make it often enough if he changes that then the real value of someone who can get in position and break up play like Diego can will be seen
I think he will add quality, incisive passing to his game as he develops. I think his main role was to win the ball, keep it and play it simple.
We found to out to our cost on many occasions that if we hit the front man/men early then we surrendered possession very easily and had to defend again.
Better forwards will give him more forward options.
Parker left, bowyer left, Lee left, bent left....so what? If poyet goes elsewhere then good luck to him. Players come and go, but Charlton will always be there.

I've changed my thinking fanny....church will come good. I've even edited my op to reflect my new found confidence.

Good on you, mate !
Fingers crossed that your trust is not misplaced & that the forthcoming season shows him progressing in a red (and white!) shirt.

I agree with nla. Poyet doesn't pass forward enough. He did start to bring this into his game towards the end of the season though.
Playing to instructions? For me he passes very accurately but, and more impressive, is that even before he receives the ball he knows what he is going to do with it. He has played some excellent forward balls and created a couple of chances. One game he hit the woodwork and the keeper made a good save. Looks to me like he's got it in his locker but was playing as instructed.
I think he'll stay because at the moment he won't get into the first team of a top six PL team, although of course he could go back out on loan. Going to a team outside the top six would be a mistake. Another Championship side isn't really an option. In my opinion he will sign a 3 year deal with various options, get out clauses and set fees included.
If he doesn't and leaves on a free then I'd wish him well and wouldn't blame him in the least. The fact he is out of contract is down to Jiminez and Jiminez only.
He doesn't pass forward enough or play 30-40 yard passes because he has sod all around him and players who are clearly no where near up to his level. If he had strikers that ran in behind the defenders more he would play these killer passes better like the one he did for Sordell against someone at home near the end of the season. Can't remember who against. Poyet is the best youngster we have ever had and he will go one better then Shelvey, Bowyer, lee and Parker and he will play for the very best and will do for most of his career. I know it sounds mad but I think he could play for the very best now. Might take him 5-10 games to get used to it but I reckon that's all it would take for him to settle in and adjust. Poyet is class and I'm pig sick that we will have to listen to his new clubs supporters raving on about how great he is when we have had him for so long but not really seen sod all of him. Final kick in the bollocks is that were not even going to get paid jack shit for this world class player. I know it's part and parcel of supporting charlton but if he goes this will hurt more then any other player leaving in my opinion.
Had we no known his age and the games under his belt, we'd all think this was a highly experienced pro with years behind him. He reads the game up there with the best.. to become our player of the year from 20 games and no goals or assists shows how quality a CDM he was. Goals we scored would have been goals conceded, we need some very informed decisions and good luck replacing him, the positions we are losing players are some of the most important positions in the game. Lose Poyet and Morrison and we've lost our spine
From the period in which he came into the side, no player made more successful passes that Poyet. In fact, he had nearly 300 more than the second highest passer Johnnie Jackson (799 to 504).
He also had the highest pass completion rate - 83%
The average length of Poyet's passes was 20 metres - higher than Ajdarevic (19), Cousins (18) and Jackson (19).
Where he fell behind those three was in "key passes" (passes that create a goalscoring opportunity). Yet that's not much of a surprise. He's a deep lying midfielder. His job was not to create chances but to keep the ball moving through midfield, which he did extremely well.
Oh, he also won more tackles than anyone in the side. Much more. He won 64 tackles. In the same amount of time, the second highest tally fell to Wilson who got 33.
But that's it for impressive Poyet stats.
Oh no, he also had the highest number of interceptions (49).

He broke play then the first ball was forward 7 out of ten times but it was only a 5 or 10 yd pass
