  • Thank you seems such an inadequate expression, Chris, when I think of the happiness, pride and pleasure that you brought back to the Valley. Yes, you gave us 'our Charlton back'. The championship winning team that you forged and enthused as players were a sheer delight to behold.
But then, as a man who is thoroughly decent, principled and energetic, why would we expect any less?
Thanks for being a wonderful player, superb motivator of players and fans, but also for understanding 'our Charlton'. Our loss will be someone else's gain and they better treat you well! Come back to us some day.
  • I just want to see that big smile back on your face.YOU ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE A CHARLTON LEGEND.
  • Good luck Chris in your next managerial job, I know with backing you will be a top manager.
  • Good luck Chris....you were Mr Charlton....sadly others now think they are (they are so wrong)....I'll tell you what..If I win the Euro-millions any time soon, I'll buy the club from Mr RD and reinstate you.....just because you deserve better.....thanks for many great memories....I hope you'll be back one day...but in the meantime wherever you go....be successful and show these twats what you can do.
  • Thank You Chris
I will always remember that day at Carlisle on equal terms to the magical play off final. You gave us that and many other special moments. It was your squad your skill your triumph. I met you once and shook your hand and that was a great privilege. It will never be the same again.
  • Some really good messages on here. And RedMidland, I've done an extra line on the Euromillions tonight for that very reason! :-)
  • Loved you as a player and manager. Loved that you are Charlton through and through like us. My family are now bringing the next generation to the Valley. You made it easy to do that because the passion for the club they see in their Mums and Dads they see in you.

Wishing you all the best. You are a gentleman and a lover of Charlton.
  • Genuinely quite choked up reading some of these. Reading someone write about THAT Hartlepool game earlier on has just confirmed how much I love the bloke.

Really really hope Chris gets to read this thread. Absolute legend.
  • Thank you so much for always treating your work at Charlton (while playing and managing) as so much more than just a job. It says everything about you as a human being and it is why you are so dearly loved at The Valley.

You mean a great deal to thousands of people, including my family (even the non-football supporters!) and we're forever grateful for how you significantly strengthened the footballing status, values, and character of the club; your club.

Just as you returned twice as a player, we pray we see you again under a regime that will recognise your unquestionable managerial abilities.

Thanks, and see you soon (please).

    Will
  • Thank you Chris Powell. I am sure your managerial career will be a great success given decent backing. I will certainly miss seeing your beaming smile at the valley, and I really hope you find your way 'home 'again sometime in the future. Good luck in your next job, I am sure you will not be idle for long.

  • Thanks for everything Sir Chris. Not your fault that things have turned out this way, and I loved your final starting XI!! CAFC hero forever!!
  • Thanks for all you did at CAFC Chris. I hope and expect that a man of your intelligence, experience and integrity will find work for another club very soon. You will be a great asset to them.
  • On a time that we were sliding down the leagues, you picked us up and set us in the right direction, you leave me and many supporters with great memories. Hope you return to Charlton one day under better circumstances.
  • Chris,
I can't add much to what has been said before. Collectively we are absolutely gutted at your departure. You gave us back our Charlton, your smile was infectious and you have acted throughout like a true gentleman and earned widespread respect. You will be one of the most successful managers in the game and our loss will be another club's gain. Very best wishes and many thanks for all your efforts
  • Thank you for everything Chris - quite simply, you deserved better. Hope you go on to have every success.
  • Good luck for the future Chris.

A gentleman and such a perfect fit for this club that it will be like watching your missus with another fella when you get another job.

I hope you will be back one day as I genuinely think its in your blood and there are very few players and managers that have had that feeling
  • Thank you for all the happy memories Chris. Into that revolving door you go and come back soon because we love you.

    Au revoir...
  • As a player you were Ms Lats favourite, ever since thefirst time she met you in the carpark at the Valley hanging around to see the players arriving for the game. She was 13 and was instantly taken by your kindness and humility. And then to cap it all away at Hull City 2nd October 2007 (Charlton win 2-1 courtesy of a Iwelumo 89th minute goal) at the end of the match you come over to the Charlton fans and make a beeline for Ms lat and give her your shirt. The elation was overwhelming. She like myself is absolutely gutted at today's announcement. Look back with pride, look forward to what will be for you I'm sure you a fantastic career in football management at the highest level. You deserve better, you are a gentleman and a legend, thank you for spending the last three years with us from that desperate day on my 50th birthday at Dagenham away to the elation of winning the title at Carlisle in record style! It has been a pleasure, good luck, much love from Ms Lat and man love from Mr Lat
  • A big heart felt thankyou for all you've given this club, Chris. I can't add much to what's been said, but I would like to commend your dignity. All too often we see football managers showing no respect to anyone. I always felt that your decency and approach shone through. I was proud to support Charlton and proud that you were our manager, particularly when you saw how some others conducted themselves.
I think it is also a tribute to you that, with scarce resources, you've assembled a team who may not all be world-beaters, but have a shared ethos and approach and, above all, are likeable. The majority of players you've brought in have fitted in with that spirit, which I think shows that you're a good judge of character.
I've no doubt that you will go on to greater things and I look forward to you returning to The Valley where I feel sure you will always receive a warm welcome. Good luck.

  • Thanks for the last 3 years as a manger and your 3 spells as a player . A Charlton legend we will remember you !!
  • Had tears in my eyes when you lined up for the national anthem on your England debut. The fantastic times my eldest son and me have have had following your team round the country will stay with me forever. Thanks Chris
  • These last 3 years have really felt like we all are in this together. I doubt we will ever have a manager again that so many fans and players adore so much as you. Good luck in your future, I'm sure you will be a huge success in your future job.
  • A great loss. Your blood runs Charlton red. We all knew that it was more than a job to you and your enthusiasm and commitment was obvious. A sad day. Best wishes to a Charlton legend and good luck for the future - whatever it holds. Thank you for some great memories.
  • A great loss at Charlton occurred today. You are hugely admired and respected and I am so disappointed to see you leave. You are a true Charlton legend and will be greatly missed.
    Tim
  • Good luck Chris. I had hoped to see you manage us for much longer and build that legacy you recently talked about. It's a real shame things didn't work out differently, with a decent Championship budget to invest in the squad I'm sure we'd have continued to progress under your management. We could see a very different Charlton in the next few years for better or worse. Things change in football. Maybe one day you'll be back to give it another go.
  • For me, Chris was the best thing about supporting CAFC. He was congeniality, class and positivity. A football manager whose voice cracked with emotion, who shed tears...a manager who CARED. I have total respect for Chris and wish him all the very best. All together now.....Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....Yayyyyyyyyy!
  • Good luck chris i hope you will not be judged harshly on this rollercoaster of a season. I feel if we could have invested for this season we could have pushed on after the way we finished last season.that was not to be and with the joke of a pitch things just got worse. I have been fortunate to be at many away games over the last 3 seasons where i felt we played our best football and feel sorry for the fans who did not get to witness some great wins. It was great to meet you at huddersfield when my lad was away mascot and yourself and alex took time out to talk in the dressing room so close to kick off.true gent.
  • thankyou chrissy for your hard work you did for charlton and good luck for the future!
  • My happiest times watching Charlton have either been watching you play or watching you manage. You are the embodiment of all the things that are good about this club and it feels at the moment like the heart has been ripped out of it. You deserve better than this and I firmly believe you will get better than this. I think you will go on to be a top top manager and its a crying shame that you were not given the backing you deserve with us. Wherever you manage in the future there will be a large group of addicks that will have that team as thier second team.
