We Simply CANNOT lose on Sunday...

  • I agree but not everything is riding on it.

If we get knocked out the cup then the only focus available is to survive.

Our heads would drop...big time, but we wouldn't throw the towel in that's for sure.
Powell would not allow that to happen.

We all know that as soon as pressure kicks in to win a certain game, e.g. winning our London derbies or playing on tv, Charlton seem to fold rather horribly.

A possible trip to Wembley in touching distance with 5,500 fans turning up and the rest watching on the old box, has the ingredients for an all mighty Charlton explosion of disappointment.

I couldn't predict this game though if my life depended on it. Can't wait for Sunday it's gana be brilliant.

    Er, yes we can.

    But we won't.
  • I am feeling more confident than I probably should be - so my greatest emotion is one of anticipation at the moment. Should we lose, no doubt extreme dejection will set in.
  • My view is that just like Huddersfield and Sheffield Wed. It's a very tough probably pretty evenly matched tie that is winnable.

Nothing to fear. We're not playing Arsenal or Chelsea on their patch we're playing Sheffield Utd.

Same game plan as at Hillsborough. Subdue them. Get into the game and win by the odd goal.

    man up you fairies.

a lily livered attitude is not going to help the players who will sense your weakness from your sitting/standing position.

XFM played "Into The Valley" at 09:12 hrs this morn. The 12 bit is significant as the score will be 1-2 (doubt we'll win 0-9).

Sure we are not going to win 09 - 12 in a thriller?
  • Every fibre of my Charlton supporting body screams at me that we will be disapointed on Sunday. I hope as with many of these occasions over the many years it is not because of a pony effort from the lads on the field. I am just getting too old to take that anymore Charlton. As for Leicester fair enough no contest and expected that but come Sunday I will be nervously waiting the result and if we do win will be looking forward to a good old tear up on CL about ticket allocations.

C'mon lads don't let the old farts down...
  • WE SHALL RULE AND CONQUER THE OTHER HALF OF SHEFFIELD ON SUNDAY!!!

I'm most disappointed by the suggestion that we fold under pressure. Sure we lose some of these games, but we also win some. We have a real problem with Millwall but I'd like to point out that we were the side that beat Huddersfield on TV when they'd gone 204 years without defeat; we won at Hillsborough when they were second and we were top of League One; we beat Sheff Utd at home a couple of weeks later when they were third (I think) and we were marching on to the title and 101 points. Most of those results were with the nucleolus of the current squad. Last season we came back from 2-0 down at home to Bolton before we went on a long run that would have left us in the bottom three. We also won at Hillsborough in the last round in front of a big crowd with extra passion due to the opponents in the next round. We also lost a 1-0 lead but came back to steal the win.

I think the current squad has a lot more steel in it than many on here seem to believe. Pun intended!

I don't, personally, think we are going to win because Sheff Utd are a good side on an incredible run, but I don't think we will bottle it or 'fail to turn up'!

Incidentally Dave, this is not a dig at you, there is a myth that we bottle it because sometimes we lose the most important games, but generally they are important to the opposition too and that makes it harder to win them.
  • That's the spirit - although I must admit - I am relieved that Sunday's match is not being billed as an operation!

Yes, only a couple of years ago we won pretty much all our high pressure games against our league title rivals along with the games we needed to sneak a win to get us over the finish line.

The bottling it under pressure angle is not so much so of the Chris Powell era in particular, more So Charlton in general of recent years only dating back to roughly 2006.

Operation Riverside...that FA cup quarter final we lost 4-1. Operation Ewood, the game to possibly save our season, we lost 4-0.

There are many big games we have succeeded in when we "need" to win for either a high amount of glory, survival, or bragging rights against our local rivals. But...

I would say, overall from the naughties and onwards, we have not proven to be one for the big game, the big occasion.

I don't actually think our past in this sense will make any difference over what happens sunday. That would be foolish a very pessimistic.
  • Middlesborough had players we could only dream of and we should have beaten them at The Valley in the first game. The Blackburn game was a bad result, but we were one of the crappiest sides in the division that season - we couldn't even beat Watford who finished bottom, and Blackburn finished 10th. Losing those games was a disappointment, but I don't think there was any shame.

We did lose to Wycome at home in the League Cup quarter final in 2007, whcih was pretty shocking, but we did knock Chelsea out of the competition at Stanford Bridge the same season - sometimes the underdog wins.

Anyway you are right, we have lost a fair few big games, but we have also won a few. I wasn't at Blackburn as I was on holiday, but I was at Middlesborough and, in my view, the players turned up for that game but we were undone by JFH and that Aussie striker, who's name alludes me, that had played at Leeds (not harry Kewell).
  • And despite their recent upturn under Clough - Sheff United don't look like they are getting out of League One again and have been stuck their for a while. As we were both relegated from th ePremiership at th esame time, it has been pretty bad for us, but even worse for them!!! So if we feel we are kicked in the teeth a lot - what must they feel like. We don't own the copyright to disapointment - and I'd rather be in our position than theirs.

    Viduka?
  • you cannot flag a moderators post - darn clique!

    ;)
  • Never know could be an operation Bloomfield in May.
  • The last thing we need is a replay. Apart from the added fixture, our pitch would suit them, as we all know how much pigs like mud...................
  • We will not lose. Been to see us dive times in Sheffield and five wins. I fly into London tomorrow after 1 day stag

You're obviously a little confused. You beat the pigs in the last round to set up your visit to Bramall Lane. Don't worry about it too much though mate. They can do wonderful things these days.
Make an appointment through your GP and he'll send you for one of those memory tests. If the news is bad there are some wonderful drugs nowadays that can delay the onset of your probable problem.

    UTB.

  • Call me old fashioned , but i am bricking it.

  • Having 'nervous poos' today. Says it all really. I hate the fact that this game means so damn much to me; a 47 year old man!
  • I'm a natural born realist (pessimist), so by 2pm Sunday, I fully expect us to be out of the Cup and bottom of the league!

But I'll be shouting my head off during the game in support of the team...

    COYA!!
  • Oh FFS
  • I'm not letting myself get too excited about a Semi...

    Fair enough.

The Chelsea win and the Wycombe loss weren't during the same season.

  • Let's hope money talks, footballers are no different when a bonus especially win bonus is put under their noses. I hope RD has sanctioned a big lump to be paid out if we get to the semis.

Optimist in me says 2-1 again to the mighty Addicks!
  • This reminds me of 94 when we had Man Utd in the QF. Didn't expect to win that one but straight after we lost 2-1 to Millwall with two late goals for them and then lost 2-0 to Palace in a very one sided match. Season fell apart after that. We have a similar week ahead and 3 wins would make this season but 3 defeats and next Saturday evening will feel so miserable
  • More bothered about staying up tbh - don't have a hope in hell of winning the FA Cup.
  • Just picture how big Chrissy's smile is as he leads us out at Wembley in his new whistle and a red rose on his lapel

That alone makes me 100% know we will win, maybe not on the day but we will win the tie
