We Simply CANNOT lose on Sunday...

Don't know about you, but absolutely sh***ing myself about Sunday.

While some teams in a relegation battle and already games behind would need extra games like a hole in the head, I feel we are currently the complete opposite. We simply have to keep this cup run level going as long as possible.

I'm extremely fearful that if we go out on Sunday, our season will completely disintegrate from that point. With the buzz and excitement out of the way, a backlog of fixtures will be a nightmare and the on-going issues of a mediocre squad that are mainly likely to be elsewhere next season will once again manifest itself.

We've waited a pissing long time for a semi final appearance, we need it desperately as fans, but I think at this exact point in time, we actually need it more importantly as players and as a club.

  • I've already got PMT and can't concentrate on my work
  • I agree 100% AFKA. I'm absolutely bricking it, too. Despite my best intentions of not allowing myself to expect too much, I haven't felt this level of anticipation and apprehension over a game in a very long time.
  • I'm not bricking it. They're a div below us and we're playing better away.
    1-2

although a replay would be good.
  • If the players match the effort put in by the 5,500 turning up to watch then we will be fine
  • Same here. Work has gone out of focus and everything else is just a blur. Can't wait for Sunday as I think us supporters will make the difference and cheer the team on to victory. It's the first time a lot of our team will have seen us out in force and let's hope they respond. COYR!
  • Absolutely bricking it as compared with 2000 (when we were winning D1 and we lost 2-0 to Bolton) and compared with 2006 (when we lost to Middlesbrough just after beating them in the League) this is our greatest chance of getting to Wembley...

(Of course against Middlesbrough we'd have gone on to face West Ham in the Semis @ Villa Park as Wembley was still being built with the final @ Cardiff)
  • I've no doubt that we will turn up on the day and the players will give everything regardless. This means just as much to our players as it does theirs'.

If we do lose, then Millwall the following Saturday will not only struggle to sell out but I fear we would get our pants pulled down yet again.
  • I think it's gonna go to a replay
  • I have that tell tale know in my stomach, its been getting worse since Wednesday, have a sneaky feeling sleep will be hard to come by Saturday night.
Still struggle to believe we are so close to Wembley, if we lost that chance now I have no idea how I will react.
  • Have to say this means as much to the players as the fans, that is clear, and with 5000 roaring them on it will be one hell of an atmopshere.

    I think it'll finish 1-1 as well

What would people prefer though... Would they prefer to see it go to a replay (more fixture congestion) or would they prefer to see an outright winner on Sunday (even if that isnt us?)

A replay would be a nightmare in terms of fixture congestion!

Only if we win the replay.
  • This is like a crap version of Christmas. Feeling uneasy, sleep's hard, just waiting for 2pm on Sunday when I know what's happening in the Cup. Urgh.

You have nailed it right there.

  • Don't buy the "if we lose Sunday we are down, our season will fall apart etc etc". Personally think many wouldn't have had that attitude if we had put up more of a show at Leicester. Simple fact is Leicester are light years away from us and have a different agenda, cup quarter final or not we would have lost there and probably put up an equally poor show. 3 games in a week caught up with the squad. Before anyone points out that we have 2 games a week till the end of the season, I know. CP has indicated that they are planning for that.

If we lose on Sunday so be it. We go again in the league on Weds night. You have to trust what the owners are saying in as much as they are trying to bring reinforcements in. We still have time to do that and I expect to see at least another couple of players in before the end of the loan window.

We've had some luck with the other results around us and are in no way cut adrift.

I am usually the most pesimistic of the pesimists but for me Sunday is not the be all and end all, if we get to Wembley great if we don't whilst it will be disappointing the world won't stop spinning.

I saw enough in the QPR and Sheff Weds performances to suggest that we can get results against most teams in the division.

For what its worth I think we'll loose on Sunday and stay up. If I was offered that now, I'd gladly accept it.
  • man up you fairies.

a lily livered attitude is not going to help the players who will sense your weakness from your sitting/standing position.

XFM played "Into The Valley" at 09:12 hrs this morn. The 12 bit is significant as the score will be 1-2 (doubt we'll win 0-9).
  • I'm afraid I've already accepted almost certain defeat on Sunday, followed by a real struggle to avoid relegation. I just can't see how we are going to score sufficient goals. This team is just not set up to score goals, nor does it have the talent to do so. I am very optimistic for the long-term future of the club, but this season is shaping up to be a write-off.

Are you staying in Dubai this Sunday or are you coming over to bring the party spirit?
No, but I'll be watching on TV. Sunday is a normal working day out here, so I'm going to have to take a half-day holiday. I'll be supporting them loudly from a distance, but I'm just pessimistic about our chances.

  • I've been going since 78 so have seen a fair few ups and downs but have a horrible feeling I'll be walking out after the match more dissapointed than I've ever been.
  • I'm going to enjoy the occassion on Sunday and whatever will be will be.
  • Don't worry Afka we will do it and the goal will come from the most unlikeliest of sources.
The scorer for Charlton is no 10 MARVIN SORDELL.
    Must have a lie down.
  • I'm on a completely different page AFKA. I am, fully, expecting us to lose on Sunday. Not because we bottle it or any of that rubbish but because Sheff United are a good side and have already beaten three teams above us in the league, and have won their last eight games on the bounce, and they are at home.

However I think the biggest difference between your fears and mine is that, like Clem, I think we have enough to get out of trouble and if we can get anything at Millwall I think we will catch them.

What gives me confidence is that towards the end of the season teams with nothing to play for become easier to beat. With us having two (or three) games a week towards the end of the season we are likely to meet more teams that have nothing to play for as we will play more teams in the last three weeks of the season. I hope we are out of trouble by then but I'd still be confident (ish) if we go into the last fortnight of the season three points behind the team forth from bottom if we have two games in hand on them.

I'm not letting myself get too excited about a Semi at Wembley as I don't think we'll get one, and this way if we lose I'll only be a little devastated where as if we win I will still be as happy as anyone else.
  • Having said that if Wigan beat City (again) and we draw them in the Semi we could be in the Final, and anyone can win one game!
  • Much as I would love to win, I fully expect not to. Charlton have this habit of promising a bit of success and snatching it away just when it can cause us the most pain.

I fear that afterwards our season will go from bad to worse.

I'll be avoiding the game and turning on after full time to check the result (my normal ritual for big games that I can't be at).

    Why the bad language AFKA?
Would have expected better of a moderator.
We've waited such a long time........................................works just as well.;-)

I said exactly this on the coach back from Leicester. The buzz of knowing we have a semi final at Wembley is exactly what the team and supporters need. I'm sure we'll all be up for the fight as supporters if we get through, but for the players, I think they need the incentive of fighting for a place in the starting XI at Wembley. We have a lot of games between now and the semi finals. If we go out, Huddersfield at home on Wednesday will have a very sombre feel about it. If we get through to the semi final, even if we draw Sunderland or Hull, I think we will go out, but that extra month of games with us in the Cup should lift our spirits enough to give us a fighting chance for the end of season run in.

I am more and more nervous about Sunday though, given Sheff Utd's form, and our performance at Leicester. If we pull another Leicester performance out the bag, then I would be very angry.
