Seems to me he's willing to let us drop while he sorts out the academy, pitch and everything then work his way up again with youth. Not that easy, even at league one it'll take a team with huge experience in the league. I'm not confident we'll make it back up within 5 years let alone straight back up, need a team chemistry and experience at the level. but let him prove me wrong, hopefully within 5 years we are challenging the Championship
Its all jam tomorrow. All the talk of building the profile of the club is just fluff without substance. RD wants CP to be creative but completely misses the point, that he does that by having control over the type of players and characters he gets in to balance the team. Evidence so far is that CP has no such control. It is all about the quality of the players brought in. I am still not seeing any evidence that Roland gives a toss whether Charlton will be relegated, can be a viable championship team or is in any way a serious owner that will take Charlton to the next level. Its all talk.

That is a very good question. Who the feck knows ? I think he feels that he can make some money. RD sees himself as a visionary who will change football and the world with his genius strategy. He won't be the first owner of a football club who thinks that they have a great strategy that will lead them to making pots of money. But to find out that the strategy is flawed and it all goes pear shaped. How successful was his quest to change the political foundations of Belgium ?
Interesting and all that but I wish he was trying out his genius strategy on someone else's football club TBH.

He's successful enough to have built up a 700 million € empire !
How many times can a manager introduce a player into their team and know they're onto a racing certainty of success? Yes Ibrahimovic, Messi and a few others are nailed on, but for the most part it is essentially an informed risk. If Chris Powell sources players from personal knowledge, promotion from within, or advice of scouts, or on reputation, or agent promotion, or because nothing else is available, or because of a desperate problem, then every time it is going to be a risk. Some you win some you lose. If another source of potential player is available in Roland's network, not dictated, not forced, then if Chris Powell looks at them, if he plays them, then he is doing what managers do anyway. For the most part each manager has a hand dealt, within restrictions, and they have to try and make the best of it, you have to play the guys you have, not the ones you wish you had. I don't see how somehow Chris's autonomy, or notion of leadership or ego is undermined by the present circumstances, perhaps Chris does feel undermined and dictated to, but it wouldn't be entirely logical. Yes we have the Alnwick/Yann/Stephens/Thuram events which may indicate some dictatorial practice from Roland, but taken individually there is a reasonable explanation for what has happened with each player movement. It may not be ideal, but today we are where we are, and in building a relationship and understanding with the new regime things will be a tad fluid, and take a little more time for complete understanding all round. I watched what was shown of the press conference, and I would say that Chris was more 'pensive' than on his usual Thursday pre match stuff. I would be interested if those at the Bromley meeting tonight can get a sense of how positive Chris feels (and indeed how close to a contract one way or another), but overall I certainly don't think Mr Duchatelet has arrived at Charlton to play football clubs, he has a vision, it seems pretty credible to me, time will obviously tell, but the future is not bleak, just a little misty still.

Changing the foundations of Belgium politics didn't go too well. Just because he has made some money in Micro electronics, he doesn't mean that his football vision is going to work ! People, players, fans and youngsters can't just be moved around like pieces on a chess board.
For those seeking an abbreviated account of Roland's interview I can summarise as follows: "Blah, blah, patronising shite, it's my money and I ain't spending it"
RD :I have plenty of money to spend on Charlton, because I am considerably richer than you. However, as I wish to breakeven or hopefully make money from Charlton, I certainly won't be spending much.
I & my team decide who will sign for Charlton. Obviously Chris Powell doesn't have to play them. However, if he doesn't he won't be able to field a team, as by this time next year, most of the players will have been signed by me/my team.
My aim is to reach The Premiership, by selling our best players & replace them with youngsters and foreigners on League 1 wages.

You got it in one, that is why I can't see Powell here next season.

Agree. And will he still be bothered if this is the case. We've got 18 games, I'm still positive. However, how quickly are this team going to gel? I still think we're so light in midfield. The forwards might be okay, but the supply will be crucial. We're all still second guessing his plan based on what he's done at other clubs, but you can't compare the Belgian league to the English league. In Standard, he bought arguably Belgium's top club. In Charlton he's got a completely different task. I 100% get the youth development, cut costs. Yet every successful club that I can remember in my time following football deploys a more balanced strategy of youth plus experience where needed. Arguably League One is even harder for a youngster to ply their trade. If we go down and have a team of young players of various nationalities, they might not know what it takes to dig us out of it. The team that we had that won us the league one title was balanced and had good experienced players (some from the championship). The way it's looking, we've only got Wiggins, Solly (might never play again), Wilson and Church as experienced players in the squad signed long term. I only rate Wiggins and Solly out of those 4, so realistically we could go down with just Wiggins. All other players out of contract. Don't get me wrong, Cousins, Poyet look very good, Reza looks lively. Pete the Pole is an unknown. Where is our team going to come from? We're going to need to bring in another 15/16 players. It's all well and good saying we might have to go back to go forward, but it might be very, very hard.
Who knows? This is probably the most questions I've ever had as a Charlton fan. In all my life we've been a steady club, at the moment it is very hard to work out what is happening
I think RD needs some time, yes there is no guarantee that we will be relegated but we were odds on for that under our previous ownership. They had let the players and managers contracts run down. One thing, if we had gone down which looked very likely under our previous management then administration surely beckoned ? I am very confident that this won't be the outcome with RD owning the club. Let's be clear he didn't inherit a club going great guns at the top of the league or even in the middle. It may be a different way of working to what we are used to but I can only see it as a better option to what was in prospect with MS and TJ.

Where has he said he is going to sell our best players ? Stephens and Kermorgant's contracts were expiring. Wiggins was tied up on a four and a half year deal. I'm pleased he is going to enhance the academy further and if we can bring in a better foreign right winger than Danny Green, I'll take that.
Chris Slegg @ChrisSlegg 1m RD: "I ask the fans not to be mad if once in a while we need to sell a good player".
Plus our 3 best players this season have just gone.
The transfer window has opened & closed & it is now the 20th February & we have still not signed 1 established player with Championship experience or better.
Good post, Seth with sentiments expressed from your head, not your heart, if I'm correct.
For my part, I hate change. I mistrust it. I'm far better with things I know & understand ...feel comfortable with.
But change is something everyone has to accept at different times in their lives for a multitude of reasons.
And when it's thrust upon us, it invariably takes time to adjust & come to terms with it....unless of course there is a choice to be made.
With the current situation at our club, we do have a choice. Love it or leave it. Either accept that, in the words of Old Blue Eyes, RD will do it his way & buckle up for a bumpy if interesting ride, or walk away. SO easy to do the latter, unless of course you're a real Addick and I believe 99.9% of us on here are just that.
I love the group of players we've supported over the past few seasons & it hurts to see any of them leave. In a similar fashion, it takes me a while to warm to some of the new recruits but more often than not, they soon become "one of us". With so many contracts coming to an end it was inevitable that some of our favourites would depart - but, we had faith in the gaffer, given the chance, to bring in replacements in the Charlton "mould". Now, it appears that once clear water has been muddied and our manager may no longer be "in charge" of recruitment ; of the players he has to integrate into his team. But, as Seth correctly pointed out, he would not be alone in this.
I have total faith that SCP has the skills required to deal with this situation - no question. Whether he is prepared to do so is another matter but change, and coping with it, is surely part & parcel of the job. What he does not deserve is someone undermining his authority & making it impossible to do said job to the best of his ability. I pray that he and RD are able to come to an agreement sooner rather than later to extend his contract & allow him to retain his role in more than name only. And that, if the gaffer says he needs a couple of additions in the battle against relegation, our owner does his utmost to make that happen.
I am prepared to "clunk, click" of course & having supported through the trauma of our exile, a new owner with new ways of running our Club is just the start of another era. We've been there before & have all the t shirts. But one thing I implore RD to be mindful of is the strong camaraderie of our players ; the respect they have for each other and most importantly, for their manager. Fracture this strong bond by failing to back him with both actions as well as words, and who knows what the outcome might be....
I'll keep the faith until I'm forced to do otherwise....Hopefully I won't have to change my views.

Got the impression from twitter that a number of quotes from the 2nd part of the presser are embargoed til Saturday, not sure why exactly
Also why not invest your millions wisely and make an enormous gain by reaching the premiership... Rather than farting about for years and most likely spending more. Its his money tho I guess...
If there were that many people in the room, and they were all expected to keep something quiet until Saturday it is unlikely to happen. Especially when so many were journalists!

Because he wants strong foundations that provide the basis for long term stability and thereby an even bigger return?
Maybe it's just me but that's how I have always run my projects in business.
One of the most important comments during the press conference was made by Richard Murray when he replied to a question about funding. He referred to Q.P.R and their £100 million debt and Bolton's £160 million debt and implied that throwing money at football clubs was not the direction that Charlton would follow.
With FFP I think there is and will be a growing realization that huge losses are unsustainable and will incur penalties. The Portsmouth example is/was a wake up call to football.
Many of us have aired our views on this site about Yanns departure but it would appear R.D. was not prepared to meet Yanns demands. When we watch Charlton v Q.P.R. on Saturday its possible that some of those playing will struggle to find clubs next season if they cannot negotiate or not offered a new contract. The list of footballers still without clubs from last season is long and will continue to grow at the end of this season.
R.D suggestion that younger players could benefit from playing or being coached by one of his European teams could be appealing to youngsters joining and playing in our academy.
Quite impressed with the press conference after supporting Charlton for over 50 years, I feel the long term prospects look bright for our club.
Here's a thought, would the prospect of playing for Standard Liege in the Champions league next season encourage the like of S.W.P. etc. to join Charlton until the end of the season, with a promise of a summer move to Belgium? Interesting time's ahead.
Got to be honest, that press conference has made me more positive for the future then i already was, especially if Chrissy has a new contract by Saturday.
I want this club to be a success for the long term and in the right way, not to be another club risking it all by chucking money down the drain for that elusive premier league pay day.
