So Who Do You Want In The Draw? (ed. Sheff U away)

  • great atmosphere at Sheff Utd today by the looks of it
  • If we can beat Wednesday my theory is we will beat Utd too. They have beaten three teams from leagues higher than them. You can do it once, twice maybe but three times? Four is highly unlikely.
  • I don't think we could have asked for a more garbage draw in all the rounds so fr if we tried.
  • I'm sure the Wednesday players are thinking about a Wemberley appearance if they can beat us and then United. I'm not sure the derby draw will be much motivation to be honest. It's not been that long since they were in the same division and I think that Arsenal away would have motivated all of the players (on both teams) more than a game at Bramel Lane.

However, I never thought we would beat Wednesday, and I don't think we will now. Huddersfield are the only Championship team we have beaten this year, and that was in a cup game they weren't as bothered about as Wednesday will be. In the event that our players gel sooner rather than later I believe there is hope in the league, but I really don't fancy a team of complete strangers winning at Hillsborough, not with the form Wednesday have been in.

Still I think we have more chance of making the semi than if we'd drawn City or Arsenal. It will just make it all the more disappointing if we fail to play any big sides in the cups this season.
  • I've been reading Curbs' autobiography lately and last night I got to the part where we beat Blackburn and Bristol City to reach the quarter-final in the FA Cup in 1994. Lost to ManU in the end but that was really a big achievement, and a very exciting part to read, well at least very exciting for me as I had known nothing about it before. Kind of a coincidence that I got up this morning to see we've just got a great draw. Like others said it's a shame we have a relegation fight to focus on, otherwise this could really be our year.....
  • But as a team we need a lift - and the FA cup could give us that - which could help us in the league.

I'm confused! Are Wednesday up for it or not??????

    ;-)
  • Great draw for us, but this is Charlton. It's everyone but us that at some point gets to Wembley in a cup isn't it.

Such a good chance to get there. If we don't it'll be all the more worse seeing either Sheffield teams there instead.
  • Wednesday will be well up for it, but that will create a pressure they don't need. As has been said - you really need the team and fans to focus 100% on the game they are playing and that is going to be hard for them now. They could still beat us of course - but I think the draw has helped us more than them.

That Man Utd away game was my favourite away day ever supporting Charlton. ( play off final excluded ) 10,000 Addicks singing " Things can only get better " by D Ream .

  • Agreed...loved it and so full of hope when they went down to 10 men just before half-time. Brilliant half-time singing D'ream, only for the mancs to score within a minute or so of the 2nd half starting. Despite the final score a brilliant day.
  • Seen as we have won two FA cup games on the road this competition and we are usually a right old disappointment when it comes to playing at home, I would say that Sheffield United away was the best draw we could have hoped for if we want to reach Wembley. Which we obviously do.
The extra pressure on Wednesday adds significant pressure in them. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is yet to be seen.

Most football fans will be calling on the steel derby all apart from us Charlton fans. Even United would want Wednesday to progress for the "occasion" which, if we did beat Wednesday, would possibly take a bit of sting out the tail of United themselves.

Don't agree, before the draw we could of lost against you guys and everyone would've thought oh well, it's only Forest away etc concentrate on the league etc.....but this is now different, the players will have an extra drive, the stay away fans will come for this now, we will desperately not want to lose this.
  • That's the point

He is making à similar point.

You wednesday only see the positives to it.

what if it doesn't go your way in the first 20 mins?

What if we score an early goal?

Frustration starts to kick in and Charlton start to enjoy the game?

    What then?

All your stay away fans may well make it an impossible atmosphere for your players because you are that desperate to win. It could work totally against you.

You are not a world class side and we will make this incredibly difficult for you.
  • Wednesday v us could well result in a replay to add to the fun.

Exactly. See the 'pressure on Wednesday' thread.

90 mins, extra time and pens, just what our pitch needs at the moment.

And our squad with a car crash pile up of a fixture list.
