dyer needs to go is the most ridiculous line i read on here regularly, Dyer is doing what powell and him plan every day for the next, he is there as an alternative viewpoint and a shoulder for chris to lean on
its the smae as Merv should go , its a load of bollox that is said when peoples intitial argument is failing, stick to your first thought which is powell should go then dyer will go also,
I think it is the need for an alternative viewpoint that Queensland is referring to. Is there one ?
Just got up and read this, YAWN, wish I had stayed in bed. All theories, no solutions. I fully support Chris Powell, doing what he has to do under the circumstances
Chris Powell has one major impediment preventing him from being a great manager. NEGATIVITY. I have been following this matter very closely since witnessing the Sheff Wed home debacle last season which 100% confirmed my previously derived conclusion. Since that match it has been quite uncanny that on almost every occasion where he has taken a positive approach (mainly games in second half of last season) the team has gained points. He has now returned to his negative ways and the reverse is happening again. Somebody needs to have a word in his ear and question some of his decisions during a match. I don't think having your best mate as your assistant is such a good thing. He is very capable of getting things right, as he did against Brighton, but he needs to get this negative demon out of his head.
A couple things you said that are spot on. I think Dyer needs to go. It may be great fun having your best friend at work with you every day, but from a professional stand point, I think it is bad business. We need someone who would stand up to Powell and tell him they think he is making a mistake, politely of course. I honestly don't think Dyer has any business being our assistant manager. Mark Kinsella would have been better. There's a reason people say mixing your personal and business lives together is a bad idea.
I never meant to disparage Powell as a person, or his previous achievements in League One. What I am saying is that having someone with such a strong connection to the club as manager is likely skewing peoples views to make rational decisions about Powells management style.
You know, this was exactly the same mentality from people when Curbs had Mervyn Day as his number two. People had a lot of respect for Curbs and as a result directed a lot of their frustration at Mervyn Day. Never mind that the manager is the one that has the final decision on everything. It's a ridiculous thing to say that Dyer needs to go. It's got to be the rarest occasion that when a team isn't doing well, the blame can be laid at the Assistant Manager's door, I cannot even think of one example where this has been the case. It's NOT Dyer's fault. It's not Dyer's fault that Powell doesn't know how to use a substitution. It's not Dyer's fault that the tactics are wrong. It's not Dyer's fault that the team selection isn't right. How do we know that Dyer does not stand up to him? How do we know that Dyer is not the perfect foil for Powell and that Powell just does not listen to him? We are not party to the conversations that these guys have. Let's stop pretending we know everything about what's going on. We don't.
People want to stick by him because he has been a magnificent manager for the last 2 years. Record points and 9th last year. Probably the third best manager in our 108 year history. Simple really
Seed, Lawrence, Curbs (Gritt) streets in front tbh
Ok maybe 4th. Still doesn't take away from the fact he has been one of the best out of maybe 30 or 40 and has done an amazing job as manager in 3 years.
Well, I think we should get Hales and Mendonca back to coach the strikers.
Jason Euell is doing well with the youth, so could be next in line as manager, perhaps with Paul Morts as his coach.
In the meantime, Johnnie Jackson can get experience elsewhere, ready to come back next. That would hopefully do us for next ten years or so.
Oh and get Curbs back as DOF to keep Roly happy too.
Isn't Curbs the DOF at Fulham? They have dropped like a stone since him and Wilkins joined the management team.
Curbs is the classic example of why a manager that is successful at one club will not necessarily be a success elsewhere. He won't be at Fulham for long IMO he probably won't succeed anywhere as a manager or DOF he has been out of the game too long and no other team will fit him the way we did. I see his future as a pundit or presenter on sky sports, time will tell. Anyway back to Powell...
How does anyone on here that chris hasn't taken dyers advice and that some of the positives that do happen are not his
You don't sack the assitant you sack the whole lot
You are clutching at straws if you think getting rid of dyer fixes the problem
This is absolutely correct.
I feel positive this morning that CP will turn it around, we are not adrift at the bottom, couple of tough weeks while new players bed in, hopefully a loan or two in midfield. We have enough to stay up. His passion for this club will rub off on the newer players and I think that's crucial. They will be well organised and together and that's as much as he can do. They are the quality that they are, he can only maximise that. New euro style coach coming in will finish us I think, players like Jackson, Morrison etc with contracts running out will lose their fight if CP isn't here.
People want to stick by him because he has been a magnificent manager for the last 2 years. Record points and 9th last year. Probably the third best manager in our 108 year history. Simple really
Third-best manager in our history, that's an interesting one!
I am a huge admirer of SCP but I think we need to put his achievements into a broader perspective.
So far his core achievement has been winning League One and getting us back into the second tier - that basically puts him in line with people like Andy Nelson and Mike Bailey in terms of managerial achievements.
Historically speaking our three best managers would be Seed, Curbishley and Lawrence with Powell firmly back in the next group - he would need to get us into the PL to join that top group.
Personally I think Powell could arguably be our fourth best ever manager today and given time might overtake Lawrence. His achievements in League One aren't comparable to Mike Bailey's or Andy Nelson's, who scraped over the line in the third promotion spots.
For what it's worth, I think getting out of the second tier is harder than it's ever been.
Why don't we rename this thread, "how to kick a really decent guy in the balls when he has already been buggered".
No contract, no certainty, no control of personnel, no gratitude and now no players but its all his fault.
There is nothing clouded about my vision and if anything he has been more of a legend as a manager (integrity, respect, loyalty, dignity etc) than he was as a player.
Give him 11 half-decent experienced professional footballers of his choice and if he does badly then by all means sack him.
In the meantime, why not save your clarity for the Belgian social engineering programme that is currently destroying your club.

If I was picking a right hand man, I'd want someone prepared to speak his mind and a working relationship that would survive disagreement, but above all who would share my vision and work closely with me on delivering it. As with Curbs/Day, the unity between the Powell and Dyer should be a good sign.
And it's not as if there's a shortage of experience at Charlton and outside, that Powell - like lots of managers - will draw on. Even within our club we have Keith Peacock and Paul Hart, and undoubtedly Pearson and Curbs are among managers Powell will talk to if needed.
Anyway, I still think this talk of Powell being awful tactically is utter nonsense. Just because it's said a lot doesn't make it true, like with the substitutions. This is a guy who made Charlton history with his management in League One, that doesn't happen by accident. If we had the best players, he chose them - but then there are plenty of examples of teams with good players who should be doing better. He managed his players to achieve the sort of results no previous Charlton side did, and with virtually the same players achieved a 9th place finish at the level above. What more can anyone expect of a manager?

Oh for christs sake can't we amalgamate all the "Chris Powell is this" "Chris Powell is that" threads into one easy-to-ignore thread? I respect peoples right to have an opinion, I don't respect this tendency to think that their opinion is so important that it needs a thread of it's own. Again.
I think the endless uncertainty this season prior to the takeover - lack of communication, expiring contracts, real financial concerns as to whether the club would avoid administration and almost certain relegation, have had a negative impact on the whole environment at the club resulting in lacklustre displays. In addition, we have been playing with a good league one standard squad that has not been bolstered adequately combined with some ageing players past their prime, some green youngsters and as this season has shown, many are not of the calibre required to be a match for the opposition in the Championship. Most managers would struggle with this level of uncertainty and limited resources.
RD has, hopefully, strengthened the squad and many of the signings look interesting. Powell is a great people person, is enormously respected in the footballing world as one time PFA Chairman, and given the resources, can mannage a sqaud to be competitive. Change of ownership is a huge upheavel and the dust needs to settle. The new signings need to bed in and after this I have no doubt that with a good squad, Powell will be a success.
He needs until the end of the season to be fully assesed under the new regime and to see if his relationship can work with new owners, squad and fans. Anything shorter than this will be premature.
One would hope that RD has the resources and will to continue, wherever we finish this season, be it in the Premiership, Championship or League One; with or without Powell next season.
Of course we need to avoid the laughable situation where Parky, a proven league 2 manager, prescided over the clubs longest winless streak in history and was eventually and belatedly fired - one of the more positive moves under Jimenez and Slater.

Oh come on Grumpy, he's doing a job most of us would die for. He's earning a salary most of us could only dream of. He's idolised by thousands of people. I don't see anyone kicking him while he's down, I see some people critisising some of his tactics. Surely that goes with the territory of being a high profile football manager. If I critisise him it's because I want him to keep his job, not because I want to see him sacked. If he doesn't start being a bit more positive I fear that he will lose his job. No owner is going to accept poor results and poor football indefinitely.
I doubt he is American, just another troll re-appearing under a new name desperate for attention.
This is the type of stupid remark that starts even more arguments, and make people feel they cant have an opinion
you dont know who he is or where hes from so unless you have some hard facts i think you should not dig out another poster
unlike your post then? Did you have to get on your high horse quite so quickly and so aggressively to make your "point".
He posts just like a well known troll who constantly attacks this site and everyone on it yet signs up again and again.
Maybe I'm wrong but no one has stopped you having an opinion so calm down.
I think that you calling someone a 'troll' for saying something negative may make people feel like they cant have an opinion
Just because you've been on here a long time doesnt make you more important than anyone else
Ive seen more comments from you calling people trolls from the weekend aswell and noone has said anything to you and felt that something needed to be said, unlike your comments which havent been needed in regards to other posters
Cant remember the last time sacking a manager and bringing in someone new has worked out well for Charlton. Powell has done well up till this season, and much has been out of his hands (contracts, funds, low morale due to uncertainty). I'll be sticking with him until at least he's had some time with a new squad and a bit of money to bring in what is needed.
Henry, I generally agree with what you say, but you then often add a pointless ad hom at the end by calling people you disagree with 'trolls'. Make your argument and leave it there.
i can't see any aggression is what Adam has posted?????
"stupid remark" "starts more arguments" "make people feel they can't have an opinion"
No aggression or high horse there then
still don't think 'stupid remark' is aggressive. For someone thats had an argument with nearly every poster on here at some point, i didn't think you would be that bothered by it.
