Walking back to the pub from the ground now. That 2nd half display was disgusting. Probably the most defensive and useless half I've seen. What a waste of money!
Some would probably say genius if we'd managed to hold on. That's the fine line...............
I really don't get this mentality. It would've been genius had he made decisions leading to us holding on, but he didn't. Its a results based business, not a 'what if?'
Do you think losing Wiggy so early affected the tactics? Lennon was probably primarily concerned with his defensive duties I imagine, whereas Wiggy has more confidence and experience to bomb forward when he can.
Anyone that thinks they personally would have provoked an attacking mentality in the team when desperate for points holding on to a 1-0 lead away at a superior team is lying to themselves. Of course in hindsight CP might have opted for a different tactical approach during the game but life's cruel, footballs cruel.
CP has to take the blame in his role as the manager yes, but we won loads of games away on the road last season, smash and grab, it worked then.
At that point in the game there was no sense in bringing players on who weren't gunna help us put some attackign impetus into the game. We were being put more and more onto the back foot with a flagging young team and as soon as we went 5-4-1 I knew we were gunna concede at least 1. It was inevitable. We needed to bring Green and Church on, it was suicide.
i don't understand why the coach didnt use his substitutions? he could of used some defensive midfielders to hold on in the end, they were def fresher on their feet and could run their asses off for 3,4 even 7 minutes, run like hell to not give them space.
There is only one tactic worthy of the word "disgusting". It is the tactic of forcing Chris Powell to release a good goalkeeper and play a keeper whom even the opposition fans make fun of, for reasons which are clearly nothing to do with the best interests of CAFC.
Bigstemarra and kings hill addick both giving far from negative summaries of the game on the post match thread. Very differing views among those these.
Nothing genius about the 2nd half display I'm afraid. If we'd have got away with a point it would have been more than lucky.
We had no outlet whatsoever, hoofing the ball clear straight to the Wigan defence was clearly our tactics and to bring Prichard on just topped it off. He's not there to shore up the defence and he's not there to break out and attack so I'm not really sure what the point was!?!
I love Powell to death but I'm quickly losing paitence with some to the decisions he makes.
People may say well if we'd have won you'd have been congratulating him. If you was there you would have seen from the 46th min what was going to happen and we did nothing to combat it but sink further and further back till the inevitable.

Some people say 'oh it's not Powell's fault, he's lost his best players'. Does anyone actually think we'd have played any different in the second half if Stephens and Yann had been out there. Powell's only tactic appears to be to nick a goal and hang on for dear life. At Huddersfield it worked, today it didn't.
The fact that we had a lot of new and not fully match fit players may have contributed to our second half collapse yesterday. The problem for Powell is that the same thing seems to be happening on numerous occasions, so this obviously gets added to them, when perhaps it shouldn't. It seems that we never seem to put together two decent halves. There is a way to play out a game and that involves frustrating the opposition. Pushing the defence forward, slowing it down, knocking it around at the back, passing back to the keeper, getting the forwards to run the ball to the corner flags etc etc etc. We do none of these things, we just put everyone behind the ball and rely on desperate clearances. Tactics need to change if A) Powell wants to keep his job We want to have any hope of staying up.
Were our tactics different to those used against us when we've lost one nil at home? Boro and Ipswich didn't particularly bother with crossing the line once ahead. I couldn't make it to Millwall but that sounded similar.
It hurts but if you look at it rationally, we were minutes away from a totally unexpected smash and grab win. On another day we would have held on.
Until CP is gone we'll continue to have this same discussion. As someone has already mentioned Powells only tactic seems to be nick a goal & hang on for dear life. Take off a striker & bring on a CB in MF & retreat as though that will strengthen us. All it does is hand the attacking impetus to the opponents. Naive & embarrasing.
Wigan's substitutes changed the game, evidently. McEachran with an assist for Fortuné and Gomez tops it off with a direct free kick.
To counter that, on our bench, we had two subs available from Phillips, Hughes, Dervite, Green, Church, Phillips, Pritchard
Looking from the outside, the only change I would've made differently is bringing on Church for Sordell to defend from the front. Long balls would've been tirelessly chased after and we might have kept the ball in the Wigan half a bit longer. Perhaps Pritchard could've come on in centre midfield instead of Dervite with ten minutes to go also. I no longer trust Hughes or Green to have a positive impact on games at this level. I wouldn't be surprised if Powell feels the same.
Yes, Pritchard was a decent call to bring energy in the middle - but not for a striker. It does send out the wrong signal - and Church is a willing, hard working runner who could have come on for Sordell instead. If he kept dfenders honest, the opponents can't play higher and higher up the pitch as they desperately look for an equaliser. Well they can, but they do so at a higher risk. I hate it when another defender is brought on - it is the same when an opposing manager does that against us - I think here's a chance. If a team is defending against a lot of pressure, I think the worst thing you can do is bring on another defensive player - sometimes it isn't about numbers but responsibilities. If you hold out for 80 or so minutes, you have worked out what is coming to you and anything that can confuse that rhythm shouldn't happen.
Nothing to do with tactics that second half, it was mentality. Players responding to constant pressure from Wigan, and naturally you sit deeper. The current team is not good enough, if we'd of held on we were still poor.

Just seen you were there - fair play in that case
Whether it's down to him or not is up for debate.

big mistake by the coach imo.
