Tell him to stick with it NWC the man is a top top fella and the times I have chatted with him he is such a Charlton man, as NSS Jr would say is Proper Charlton and any of the people that are questioning him and calling for his head are idiots who aint proper Charlton at all
is anyone doing that? the problems are not of the ground staff's making, any fool can see that
I really don't know what to say about the pitch but it is going to be a massive problem for the second half of the season. If we can get through against Oxford we will have the best part of 4 weeks until the next home game- Birmingham. Obviously a drainage and relay is not a viable solution mid season but Chris Wilder is right when he says it was a real leveller last night and I am not using it as an excuse for the performance- the players really don't seem to trust it at all which is going to be a huge problem for us.
Last season they seemed to get used to it after a few games once conditions dried up in April but it is midwinter and will be wet for some time to come. I'm no pitch expert but can they not put some grass seed into it or lay down some turf and bed it in like they did with the penalty area last season? I know the ball does roll okay but it looks absolutely horrendous and I just don't know what the answer is with half a season to go. Thankfully there is going to be a drainage and pitch overhaul in the summer so we shouldn't have this problem again. I can't help but feel that this pitch issue- rather than the lack of signings- will be the legacy of two seasons of lack of investment by Slater & Jimenez.
I think the club are keeping the dome for the foreseeable future. It gets pretty warm under there so I think they will seed it, vertidrain it etc this week, so some of the grass should come back. The plan was to just get last night out the way, win and then have the next three weeks to improve it. It should be a lot better for the Brum game.
Cheers NW for all the info and updates. Also for confirming the 28k figure.
Please keep us updated and if you should speak to Paddy say hello from me and remind him that most of us know how hard he and his team have worked and that the blame doesn't lie with him.

Cheers, will do. I had to laugh last night though watching him trudge across the pitch in his Timberland boots. If anyone had ever walked on his pitch in Timberlands a few years ago he would of gone mad !

Thanks NW for your insight into what's been going on.
Are you able to say what the potential plan is for the rest of the season?

After that, hopefully the dome will stay til March time to keep the rain and snow off and they will muddle through til the Summer. I think the renovation of the pitch will include undersoil heating.
Silly comments about Paddy and his team. Groundsmen can only work with the tools and the budget they are given and clearly Paddy has had very little funds for the last 2 years.
Get the drainage repaired, give them a decent budget to work with and the type of pitch we are used to seeing will return.
Echo the above...pls let PP know we understand and that if you give a man a sows ear dont expect him to make a silk purse out of it.
Ms and tj have prior for this...like not paying local suppliers on time summer of 2012 i believe. They think they can get away with it because they can push people about. Tj has always been known for this especially. Numbers on a balance sheet in millions are a different animal from real cash in hand. I can quite believe they chanced it over 8k.
I remember Mourinho commenting on the pitch a few years ago saying it was one of the best they'd played on. Same story for both the Powells - give them the money they need and they'll do the job

Agreed, it's like a tradesman being forced to work without tools!

This!
I can't believe people were blaming him for the drainage problem.I would be close to tears too if I had been working so hard for the past twenty years and still got stick from people for something that clearly was not my fault.I feel really sorry for Paddy and all the staff.Too bad our previous owners have got away with it.If I were Duchatelet,I'd probably request for a refund!I mean how can you sell something that's broken inside to others and then run away with the money? Isn't that fraudulent concealment???
Nice sentiments...but of all the hidden dangers lurking in corporate due diligence, i dont think you can.claim.ignorance over something that is 60 x 100m and big brown and sticky

on here on other forums and on twatter there were comments saying he should either be sacked or retire, so yep unfortunately there were tools left out of a tool box on sat

To be fair to MS and TJ, the reason why major money wasn't spent on the pitch, was that there wasn't any money to spend due to the parlous nature of the finances, and a lot of the blame for that has to reside on the previous owners and the mismanagement of the club netween 2006 and 2011. If we'd sold Solly last summer to pay for major pitch repairs, what would the reaction of the fans have been like?

My old grandad always used to say that the best two pitches in the whole of the football league were Charlton & ipswich , he is at this very moment spinning in his grave .
Yes, where is Paddy? I thought I might see him out with his pitch fork tonight. I feel really sorry for the bloke, he is so dedicated to his work and treats the pitch like his baby. It must be soul destroying to him, as he is a great groundsman as he was a winger.
Soul destroying doesn't come close ! Saturday was his lowest point and he was pretty much close to tears when I spoke to him. I think if he didn't love CAFC so much he would of quit a while back. From my own personal point of view I think the club have hung him out to dry for the last couple of seasons but he has just got on with it. They have spent the very bare minimum on the pitch for 3 seasons also knowing the drainage is old and blocked and only in recent weeks have they come out and gave reasons for the state of the pitch. They haven't had a basic pitch cover which is crazy for a club of our size. RD and Katrine have been excellent since coming in and have promised to sort it in the summer, so I hope he stays and has his pride and joy back !

Woukd people rather 600k was spent on a drain and some seed or a striker or Powell ?
Depends how the pitch is looking by the next game. If it's sorted, then focus on contracts. If not we'll go down if we don't have a proper pitch to play on.

Says it all about sacking them if they did!!

Said its no one fault and the groundstaff are working their socks off.
Pitch is flat with no standing water but is boggy. Reckons it will be closed season when its sorted
Good question, if I had to choose it would be pitch. Players & managers come and go. the pitch has been horrendous over the past couple of seasons.
